Taxonomy & naming
Micracanthicus vandragti was described by Nathan K. Lujan and Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2011, in a paper establishing two new genera and species of Ancistrini from the Western Guiana Shield (Copeia 2011(2): 216–225). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats it as the valid name and type species of the monotypic genus Micracanthicus; because it was described directly in this genus, the authority carries no parentheses.
The species sits within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae. The genus name combines the Greek mikros, 'small', with Acanthicus, the name of the suprageneric clade of which Micracanthicus is hypothesised to be a basal member — an apt construction for one of the smallest fishes in a group that includes some of the largest loricariids. The specific epithet vandragti honours Dr Randall 'Randy' Van Dragt, a biologist and ecologist at Calvin College.
Morphology
Micracanthicus vandragti is among the smallest of all Ancistrini, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. The body is elongated and strongly flattened in cross-section — a build suited to life pressed against rock in flowing water. As in all loricariids, the fish bears bony armour plating and a ventral suckermouth.
The most detailed morphological account is the original description by Lujan and Armbruster (2011). No reliable published account of sexual dimorphism in this species is available, though, as in many Ancistrini, the development of odontodes may differ between the sexes; this should not be assumed in the absence of documented observation.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Venezuela (Amazonas State) and is known only from the lower Ventuari River and the Orinoco River near its confluence with the Ventuari, around 4–5°N and 66–67°W. It inhabits shallow rocky reefs in the main river channel.
Measurements recorded at one collecting site give a vivid picture of its environment: a water temperature of 90 °F, pH 6.9, very low conductivity of 12.9 µS/cm, zero salinity, and dissolved oxygen of 6.6 mg/l (about 90.6 percent saturation) — warm, soft, acidic, well-oxygenated blackwater-influenced river water typical of the Guiana Shield. The species was found living alongside at least 13 other loricariids, including Baryancistrus beggini and B. demantoides, Hemiancistrus guahiborum and H. subviridis, and Hypancistrus contradens and H. lunaorum, underscoring the extraordinary loricariid diversity of these rocky habitats.
Feeding
Gut-content analysis reported in the original description shows that Micracanthicus vandragti is a detritivore: examined stomachs contained mostly amorphous organic detritus together with inorganic sediment, and one specimen had ingested two small snail shells. This is consistent with a fish that grazes and sifts the fine material accumulating on and among the rocks of its reef habitat, rather than a dedicated wood-eater or algae specialist.
Mating
No information on courtship or mating behaviour in Micracanthicus vandragti has been published. While many Ancistrini are cave-spawners with male parental care, no behavioural observations specific to this recently described species exist in the literature.
Breeding
There are no published breeding reports for Micracanthicus vandragti, in the wild or in captivity. The species is not present in the aquarium trade, and its reproductive mode, fecundity, and any parental care remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
Micracanthicus vandragti has no presence in the aquarium hobby. It carries no L-number and no ornamental-trade record, and as a species described only in 2011 from a remote stretch of the Venezuelan Orinoco system, it has generated no body of husbandry experience.
If its habitat data are any guide, it would be a fish of warm, very soft, acidic, well-oxygenated flowing water over rock — demanding conditions to replicate. With no trade specimens and no published care information, it is best regarded as a species of scientific interest rather than an aquarium subject.
Conservation
Micracanthicus vandragti has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It is known only from a small area of the lower Ventuari and adjacent Orinoco, which makes it a narrow-range endemic; restricted distributions of this kind can render species sensitive to localised disturbance, such as changes to flow, sedimentation, or mining activity in the Guiana Shield. In the absence of a formal assessment, no conservation status can be assigned, and the species' true vulnerability remains unquantified.
