Described in 2024 from the Ecuadorian Amazon, Panaqolus orcesi is one of two small wood-eating loricariids introduced to science in a single Zootaxa paper by Provenzano-Rizzi, Barriga-Salazar, and Stewart. Named in honour of Ecuadorian vertebrate biologist Gustavo Orces, it represents the larger of the two new species and is distinguished from all congeners by a suite of measurements and by its dark base coloration overlaid with pale spots.

Taxonomy & naming

Panaqolus orcesi was formally described by Provenzano-Rizzi, Barriga-Salazar, and Stewart in 2024 in Zootaxa 5463(1): 112–126, together with the closely related P. pantostiktos from the same Ecuadorian Amazon drainages. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Panaqolus orcesi Provenzano, Barriga-Salazar & Stewart, 2024 as a valid species. The holotype reached 7 in standard length, establishing the upper end of the known size range.

The species belongs to the genus Panaqolus, the group of smaller, dwarf wood-eating catfishes closely allied to the larger Panaque. Both genera share the spatulate or multi-cusped teeth adapted for rasping wood and are placed in the tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae. Panaqolus was erected partly to separate the smaller, less robust wood-eaters from the large, deep-bodied Panaque, though both are dedicated xylivores.

The specific epithet honours Gustavo Orces, whose extensive research on vertebrate biodiversity in Ecuador over many decades laid important groundwork for understanding the country's rich freshwater fauna. As a 2024 description, P. orcesi is among the most recently named loricariid species and aquarium records are essentially absent at present.

Morphology

The maximum standard length recorded for Panaqolus orcesi is 7 in (7 in SL), making it substantially larger than the smallest Panaqolus species and close to the size range of some Panaque. The body carries the full loricariid scute armour in overlapping rows. Base coloration of the head, body, and fins is uniformly grey, brown, or black, overlaid with light dots in cream, yellow, or gold — a pattern common in Panaqolus but differing in the precise size and density of spots from congeners.

The dentary teeth number five to seven, and the distal tips of the dentaries converge to form an acute angle — a character noted in the original description. Metrically, P. orcesi is distinguished from congeners by inter-dorsal distance 12.1–12.7% SL, abdominal length 23.0–25.3% SL, dorsal-fin base length 33.1–35.0% SL, dorsal- and pectoral-fin spines 34.0–34.1% and 35.8–37.4% SL respectively, caudal peduncle depth 11.8–12.7% SL, orbital diameter 17.1–18.3% HL, interorbital distance 44.5–45.8% HL, and snout length 68.5–70.3% HL. Average mid-lateral dot size is smaller and the average number of dots on the dorsal surface of the pectoral fin is higher than in its congeners.

As a recently described species, additional morphological data beyond the original description are not yet available in the secondary literature.

Habitat

Panaqolus orcesi is known from freshwaters of Ecuador, specifically from Amazonian drainages. FishBase records a benthopelagic lifestyle at depths of 0–3 ft, consistent with the typical riffle and fast-run microhabitats used by Panaqolus in Amazonian headwater streams. Members of this genus in the Amazon basin are characteristically found in association with submerged wood — sunken logs, root tangles, and woody debris accumulations in flowing water — where they both feed and shelter.

Ecuadorian Amazonian tributaries at lower to mid elevations generally carry warm, soft, acidic to near-neutral water. Specific water-chemistry data for the collection localities of P. orcesi have not been published in accessible sources, and precise site coordinates were not available from the sources used. The species' depth range (0–3 ft) indicates it inhabits shallow, accessible riverine zones rather than deep channels.

Feeding

Like all Panaqolus, P. orcesi is a xylivore — a dedicated wood-eater. The genus shares with Panaque the fundamental adaptation of spatulate or multi-cusped teeth capable of rasping cellulose-rich wood fibres, and wood forms a genuine dietary staple rather than merely a grazing surface. Gut contents of wood-eating loricariids typically contain large quantities of wood fragments alongside the biofilm communities — bacteria, fungi, and fine detritus — that colonise submerged wood surfaces.

The digestive system of wood-eating loricariids is adapted for fermenting plant material, with an elongated intestinal tract and microbial flora that help break down structural carbohydrates. This means that access to quality driftwood is a dietary necessity rather than an optional enrichment for captive individuals.

In aquarium settings, Panaqolus species are supplemented with vegetable matter — blanched zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, and peas — and algae wafers or spirulina-based foods. Protein-heavy foods should be offered sparingly. No feeding observations specific to P. orcesi from captive specimens have been recorded.

Mating

No mating observations for Panaqolus orcesi have been published. Based on the reproductive biology documented for other Panaqolus species — and broadly consistent across the tribe Ancistrini — males are expected to be territorial around cavity sites, to defend suitable crevices or hollow wood sections, and to use their interopercular odontodes in male-male competition and display.

Sexual dimorphism in Panaqolus is generally subtle. Breeding males typically develop enlarged interopercular odontodes. Females may be recognisable by a rounder body profile and distinct genital papilla morphology when in breeding condition. Given the species was only described in 2024, no hobbyist or researcher has reported conditioning or spawning attempts.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Panaqolus orcesi is unknown. By analogy with other Panaqolus species, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the expected mode: the male selects and defends a narrow cavity, the eggs are deposited within it, and the male fans and guards the clutch through incubation. Fry in Panaqolus are typically well-developed on hatching and begin rasping wood and biofilm surfaces shortly after yolk-sac absorption.

As a recently described species available in the hobby only since 2024 at the earliest — and not yet established in aquarium trade — no captive breeding records exist. Data are accordingly omitted rather than extrapolated.

In the aquarium

Panaqolus orcesi is not currently established in the ornamental fish trade, and no aquarium-keeping accounts have been published. The following represents reasonable inference from the species' size, phylogenetic position, and the known requirements of Panaqolus congeners — not confirmed husbandry data.

At up to 7 in SL this is one of the larger Panaqolus, and aquarium volume should reflect that: a minimum of 30–40 US gal is a sensible starting point for a single individual, with larger setups preferred if groups are intended. The tank must contain multiple pieces of driftwood of varying hardness — this is not optional for a xylivore, as wood provides both nutrition and essential gut microbiota. Hollow wood sections or commercial breeding tubes should be provided as retreats and potential spawning sites.

Water parameters consistent with Ecuadorian Amazonian tributaries — temperature approximately 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately soft water — are the most defensible starting point, though precise tolerances have not been measured for this species. High water quality and oxygenation are important; wood-eating loricariids generate significant organic waste and require efficient filtration.

Until hobbyist experience accumulates, keepers should approach this species conservatively and document their observations — any reliable records of feeding behaviour, water-parameter tolerance, or breeding would add meaningfully to the available knowledge.

Conservation

Panaqolus orcesi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2024, it has not yet entered the formal evaluation pipeline. No population-size estimates, range maps, or trend data are available beyond the distributional information in the original description (Ecuador, Amazonian drainages).

Ecuadorian Amazon rivers face significant and ongoing anthropogenic pressures: deforestation, agricultural expansion, sedimentation, artisanal gold mining, and in some basins, oil extraction. Wood-dependent loricariids are particularly sensitive to the loss of submerged wood habitat, which results from riparian deforestation and altered river dynamics. Without range data or population assessments it is not possible to characterise the conservation status of P. orcesi beyond noting that formal evaluation is warranted.
