Panaqolus pantostiktos was formally described by Provenzano-Rizzi, Barriga-Salazar, and Stewart in 2024 in Zootaxa 5463(1): 112–126 — the same paper that established P. orcesi. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Panaqolus pantostiktos Provenzano, Barriga-Salazar & Stewart, 2024 as a valid species. It is one of the most recently named members of the genus.
Panaqolus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. The genus encompasses smaller, dwarf wood-eating loricariids that share spatulate or multi-cusped teeth with the larger Panaque but attain considerably more modest adult sizes. The two genera together form a xylivorous (wood-eating) lineage within the broader armoured catfish radiation.
The specific epithet is derived from the Greek words pantoú ('everywhere') and stiktós ('spotted, spotty, or punctuate'), directly describing the all-over spotting pattern that characterises this species and sets it apart from some of its more sparsely patterned relatives. As a 2024 description, P. pantostiktos is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby and the scientific literature beyond the original description.
Morphology
The maximum standard length for Panaqolus pantostiktos recorded by FishBase is 6.5 in SL, placing it slightly smaller than its co-described congener P. orcesi. The body is encased in the overlapping bony scutes typical of all loricariid catfishes.
The species takes its name from its spotting pattern: spots are distributed across essentially the entire body surface, including areas where congeners show sparser or more restricted patterning. Wood-eating loricariids are closely tied to woody debris habitats — sunken logs, root tangles, and driftwood piles in or near moderate current. These structures provide both a feeding substrate and refuge from predation. The Ecuadorian Amazon at mid to low elevations is characterised by warm, generally soft, and acidic to near-neutral water, though the precise collection-site chemistry for P. pantostiktos is not available in published sources consulted.
Feeding
Panaqolus pantostiktos is a xylivore — wood is not supplementary but dietary. Like all Panaqolus, this species uses multi-cusped teeth to rasp cellulose-rich wood fibres, and the gut is adapted for fermenting structural carbohydrates with the help of a specialised microbial community. Whether these characters apply straightforwardly to P. pantostiktos is not confirmed.

No breeding records exist for Panaqolus pantostiktos; the species was described only in 2024 and has not yet been established in the ornamental trade or kept in documented captive collections. Cave-spawning with paternal brood care — the standard Panaqolus mode — is expected but not confirmed.
In well-documented Panaqolus species, the male guards and fans adhesive eggs deposited on the walls of a narrow cavity, removes fungused or unfertilised eggs, and continues guarding the fry after hatching until they disperse and begin feeding independently. Fry typically begin rasping wood and biofilm within days of hatching. No clutch-size or incubation-period data are available for this species.
In the aquarium
Panaqolus pantostiktos is not in the ornamental trade at the time of writing. The following represents informed inference from the species' biology and the husbandry requirements of congeners — not confirmed keeper experience.
At up to 6.5 in SL this species is a medium-sized Panaqolus. An aquarium of 25–40 US gal would be the minimum sensible allocation for a single fish, with a larger tank needed for multiple individuals. The most critical furnishing is driftwood: multiple pieces of varying size, density, and species should be provided as a dietary necessity — caves or hollow wood sections also serve as retreats and potential spawning sites.
Water parameters consistent with Ecuadorian Amazonian tributaries are a reasonable guide: temperature approximately 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately soft water. Good filtration is important because wood-rasping loricariids generate substantial organic waste. Well-oxygenated water is preferable, mimicking the flowing-water conditions of the natural habitat.
Any keeper who obtains specimens of this recently described species would be contributing valuable data to the hobby and the scientific record simply by documenting their observations of behaviour, water tolerances, and feeding.
Conservation
Panaqolus pantostiktos has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Described in 2024, it has not yet entered the formal evaluation cycle, and no population estimates, detailed range maps, or trend data are available.
The Ecuadorian Amazon faces significant anthropogenic pressure from deforestation, agricultural land conversion, gold mining, and hydrocarbon extraction, all of which affect water quality and riparian habitat. Wood-eating loricariids are particularly sensitive to the loss of submerged woody debris, which is a direct consequence of riparian deforestation. Without range and abundance data for P. pantostiktos, no substantive conservation assessment can be made, but formal evaluation by the IUCN would be appropriate given its restricted known distribution and the pressures on its habitat.
