Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus zawadzkii was formally described by da Costa e Silva, Roxo, Britzke, and Oliveira in 2014 in ZooKeys (volume 406, pages 1–23), from type specimens collected in the rio Tapajós and the rio Tracuá (a Tapajós tributary), Pará and Amazonas States, Brazil. The type locality is the rio Tapajós at 4°33'09.7"S, 56°17'59.6"W; paratypes were taken from the rio Tracuá at 4°28'11.2"S, 56°17'01.1"W. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Pseudancistrus zawadzkii da Costa e Silva et al., 2014.
The species belongs to the Pseudancistrus barbatus species group — a set of closely related taxa unified by the presence of hypertrophied odontodes along the snout margin and the absence of evertible cheek plates. Other members of this group include P. barbatus, P. corantijniensis, P. depressus, P. asurini, P. kayabi, P. reus, and P. nigrescens. A second ZooKeys paper by Silva et al. (2015), describing P. kayabi and P. asurini from the same Tapajós region, provided additional morphometric comparisons that further clarify the diagnosis of P. zawadzkii.
Within Loricariidae, Pseudancistrus sits in subfamily Hypostominae. The genus name refers to its resemblance to — and distinction from — Ancistrus: pseudo- (Greek, 'false') + ancistrus (Greek, 'hook'), reflecting the similar bristle-bearing snout but different systematic position. No L-numbers have been assigned to this species in the trade literature.
Morphology
Adult P. zawadzkii reach 4.5 in SL in males and up to 5 in SL in females — an unusual reversal of the male-larger pattern seen in some loricariids, though the difference may partly reflect individual variation in small samples. The body is covered with the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of loricariids.
Ground colour is dark brown. The diagnostic pattern consists of conspicuous rounded whitish spots that increase markedly in size between the head and the body: spots on the head measure approximately 0.5 in in diameter, while those on the body expand to 0.5 in. Crucially, each spot does not exceed the width of a single plate — an important diagnostic character that separates P. zawadzkii from related species with confluent or plate-spanning markings.
The snout bears hypertrophied odontodes along its margin — these are elongated, spine-like structures that increase gradually in length from the posterior snout tip toward the cheek. This arrangement is characteristic of the barbatus group as a whole and likely functions in substrate-scraping and male competition. The species lacks the evertible interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles that fan outward when the fish is stressed) found in genera such as Ancistrus.
Key diagnostic measurements include: head depth 67.0–72.7% HL; cleithral width 35.2–38.0% SL; pectoral spine 31–33% SL; dorsal-fin base 29–31% SL; peduncle depth 12.5–14.2% SL. Dorsal and caudal fins lack the dark bars that characterise the co-distributed P. kayabi, and fin tips lack the whitish colouration of P. asurini — these absences are the primary characters separating P. zawadzkii from its closest relatives in the same river basin.
Habitat
The species is known from the rio Tapajós and the rio Tracuá (Tapajós basin), Pará State, Brazil. The Tapajós is one of the major southern tributaries of the Amazon, draining the ancient Brazilian Shield from the Mato Grosso plateau northward to the confluence near Santarém. It is a clear-water river — relatively low in dissolved nutrients, low to moderate in pH, warm, and transparent — with exposed granitic and laterite rock outcrops forming the rapids and boulder fields that characterise the middle and lower sections.
Microhabitat is described as clear-water rivers of medium to large size with rocky outcrops forming small waterfalls, and substrates of rock and sand. The hypertrophied snout odontodes of the barbatus group are consistent with life on hard, current-swept substrates where grip and scraping ability matter. The genus Pseudancistrus includes species recorded as capable of facultative air-breathing, an adaptation to the intermittently hypoxic conditions that can develop in rocky rapids during low-water periods.
The paper describing P. zawadzkii discusses Tapajós basin biogeography and dispersal routes, though specific ecological parameters for this species at the type locality were not reported in available sources.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to P. zawadzkii has been published. The morphology of the barbatus group — with a subterminal suckermouth and hypertrophied snout odontodes — is consistent with scraping biofilm, periphyton, and fine aufwuchs from rock surfaces. This feeding mode is broadly shared across Pseudancistrus and related hypostomines that occupy rocky current-swept habitats.
In the aquarium, species of similar morphology and habitat are generally maintained on a diet dominated by algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, peas), and sinking pellets. Small meaty supplements such as frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp may be accepted. Water quality and oxygenation are more critical to the health of rheophilic loricariids than dietary variety, but a balanced diet avoids nutritional deficiencies in long-term captive care.
Mating
No observations on courtship behaviour in P. zawadzkii have been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature. Within loricariids with similar habitat ecology, males are typically territorial around preferred shelter sites in rocky crevices or under boulders, and may use the hypertrophied snout odontodes in male-male encounters — both as tactile weapons and as visual displays.
Given the lack of assigned L-numbers and the species' absence from widespread trade, detailed hobbyist accounts of reproductive behaviour are not currently available. The general loricariid model — male territory establishment, female assessment of the site, and spawning within a sheltered cavity — is the working assumption.
Breeding
No published breeding accounts exist for P. zawadzkii in the scientific literature or mainstream hobby sources. The species has not been widely traded under an L-number designation, and captive reproduction has not been documented in available records.
By analogy with related Pseudancistrus and hypostomine loricariids from similar habitats, cave or crevice spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the most probable reproductive mode. This pattern — male defending a clutch of adhesive eggs deposited on a hard surface within a sheltered rocky space — is highly conserved across the subfamily. Until breeding accounts are published or the species enters wider hobbyist circulation, care recommendations must remain general.
In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus zawadzkii is not currently a common aquarium fish. Its absence from the L-number and trade literature means that established husbandry protocols specific to this species do not exist. Care requirements can be inferred from its habitat — clear, well-oxygenated water with a rocky bottom and moderate to strong current — and from the general requirements of the barbatus group and the broader Pseudancistrus genus.
A tank for a specimen from this ecological guild should provide strong water movement, excellent filtration, high dissolved oxygen, and a substrate of smooth or rough stones arranged to create crevices. Temperatures of 75–82 °F, pH of 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water are a reasonable starting point based on Tapajós system conditions. Adult size of approximately 4.5 in SL suggests a tank of at least 40 US gal for a single individual, more for a pair or small group.
The hypertrophied snout odontodes may make this species more aggressive or competitive than similarly-sized loricariids without this feature, so tankmates should be chosen with some care; robust, similarly-sized fish from flowing-water environments are preferable to delicate community species.
Conservation
The IUCN has not evaluated Pseudancistrus zawadzkii. The Tapajós basin has attracted significant conservation attention in recent decades due to hydroelectric development — particularly the Belo Monte dam on the nearby Xingu, and dam proposals on the Tapajós itself, some of which have been contested or paused following environmental review and Indigenous rights challenges. Rocky-rapids loricariids are among the fish groups considered most vulnerable to impoundment, as dams drown the fast-flowing substrate they depend on, alter temperature and oxygen regimes, and block population connectivity.
Without a formal assessment or systematic population data, the actual status of P. zawadzkii is unknown. Its restricted recorded distribution — two localities within the Tapajós basin — and its habitat specificity to rocky rapids suggest it warrants monitoring. A formal IUCN assessment and baseline population survey would be informative, particularly given ongoing and proposed infrastructure development in the Tapajós watershed.
