Pareiorhina rosai is a diminutive, armoured catfish barely reaching 2 in, discovered in the headwater streams of Brazil's ancient Rio São Francisco basin. Essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, it represents the careful, targeted kind of ichthyological work that reveals just how many small rheophilic loricariids still await discovery in South America's upland drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhina rosai was described by Silva, Roxo and Oyakawa in 2016 in Neotropical Ichthyology, as part of a revision of the genus Pareiorhina. The type locality lies in the Rio São Francisco basin, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Pareiorhina rosai Silva, Roxo & Oyakawa, 2016.

The genus Pareiorhina (Boulenger, 1900) belongs to the subfamily Neoplecostominae, one of the smaller subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae. Neoplecostomines are generally small, rheophilic catfishes associated with fast-flowing, rocky headwater streams in southeastern Brazil. As of the 2016 description, approximately six to seven valid species were recognised in Pareiorhina, several of which are restricted to individual river drainages within southeastern Brazil — a pattern consistent with the high endemism typical of São Francisco basin ichthyofauna.

The specific epithet honours a collaborator of the describing authors; the full etymology is detailed in the original description. The species carries no L-number or CW code, reflecting both its extreme rarity in commerce and the fact that it was unknown before 2016.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL), placing Pareiorhina rosai among the smallest loricariids described in recent years. The body is covered in the interlocking bony scutes characteristic of the family. The abdomen is distinctively keeled — a defining morphological character of the genus — and head proportions differ from related genera in ways that the original description quantifies in detail.

As in other Neoplecostominae, the mouth is ventrally positioned and adapted for clinging to and scraping hard substrates in fast current. The dental and plate arrangement that defines Pareiorhina from allied genera (including Neoplecostomus) is described formally in the 2016 revision.

Sexual dimorphism follows the general neoplecostomine pattern: males develop odontode bristles on the interoperculum and along the body during the breeding period, providing a reliable field indicator of sex in adult specimens.

Habitat

Pareiorhina rosai is known from clear, upland streams in Minas Gerais, within the upper Rio São Francisco drainage. This region sits at the transition between the Cerrado savanna and the remnants of Atlantic Forest, a biome boundary associated with high freshwater biodiversity and endemism.

The streams occupied by this species are typically well-oxygenated, cool, and fast-flowing, with rocky or gravelly substrates. These rheophilic conditions are characteristic of Neoplecostominae generally: the group has evolved to exploit the biofilm-rich undersides of rocks and boulders in riffles and rapids, microhabitats that are less accessible to many other fish. Water clarity in such headwaters is generally high, though seasonal variation in flow and temperature occurs in the Cerrado zone.

The São Francisco basin is a geologically ancient, internally draining system with a long history of isolation from neighbouring Atlantic coastal drainages. This history has produced high levels of endemism, particularly among rheophilic benthic fishes — a context that helps explain why multiple Pareiorhina species occupy distinct sub-basins or tributary systems.

Feeding

Like other members of Neoplecostominae, Pareiorhina rosai is presumed to feed primarily on periphyton and algae scraped from rocky substrates, along with associated organic detritus and micro-invertebrates. The ventrally positioned mouth and robust scraping dentition are well adapted to grazing hard surfaces in fast current.

No specific dietary studies are available for this species, and no captive feeding records exist in the published hobby literature. By analogy with the better-documented Neoplecostomus species and closely related genera, the diet is likely dominated by epilithic algae and biofilm, with occasional incidental ingestion of detrital material and small invertebrates dislodged from the substrate.

Mating

No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Pareiorhina rosai have been published, either from the wild or from captivity. The species is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby.

By inference from related Neoplecostominae and broader loricariid biology, males likely defend rocky crevice or cavity sites, with pronounced odontode development on breeding males serving both in male-to-male competition and in mate assessment. The significance of the keeled abdomen in spawning posture or egg deposition has not been examined in Pareiorhina specifically.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Pareiorhina rosai exist in the published hobby or scientific literature. The species has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity, so there is no hobbyist-derived information to draw on.

Within Loricariidae broadly, Neoplecostominae are understood to spawn in crevices or under rocks in fast-flowing water, with males guarding the eggs. Whether Pareiorhina rosai follows this pattern in detail is not documented.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhina rosai is not found in the aquarium trade. It was described only in 2016, its range is restricted, and its rheophilic habitat requirements are specialised. No captive care records are available.

If this species were to become available, the care requirements of related Neoplecostominae would provide a starting framework: cool (likely 64–75 °F), fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, soft-to-moderately-hard acidic-to-neutral water; rocky substrate with ample biofilm surfaces; and minimal organic waste loading. These are demanding conditions more akin to hillstream fish than typical community plecos, and the tiny adult size would require care to avoid competition from larger tankmates.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhina rosai as Near Threatened (NT) in 2020. The NT listing reflects the species' restricted range within the upper São Francisco basin, its specific dependence on clear, well-oxygenated headwater streams, and the ongoing degradation of those habitats in Minas Gerais.

The primary threats to its watershed are agricultural conversion — principally soy cultivation and cattle ranching associated with Cerrado expansion — along with water extraction for irrigation. These activities increase sediment loads and reduce dry-season flows in the headwater tributaries that the species depends on. The São Francisco basin has experienced significant deforestation of riparian corridors, which degrades the stream conditions that rheophilic loricariids require.

The species does not yet meet the quantitative thresholds for Vulnerable (VU) status, but its small range and habitat specificity mean that continued deterioration of upland stream quality in Minas Gerais could push it toward a higher threat category in future assessments.
