Taxonomy & naming
Spatuloricaria nudiventris was described by Achille Valenciennes in volume 15 of the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1840, page 469) from a holotype collected in the Rio São Francisco, Brazil. The holotype (MNHN A-9558) is in poor condition but is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris; full type catalog details are provided by Bertin & Estève (1950) and Ferraris (2007). The original combination was Loricaria nudiventris; the species was subsequently transferred to Spatuloricaria when that genus was erected by Schultz (1944).
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) recognises the valid combination Spatuloricaria nudiventris (Valenciennes 1840) and places the species in subfamily Loricariinae. The combination has been validated by every major subsequent checklist, including Isbrücker (1980, 1981, 2001, 2002), Ferraris in Reis et al. (2003), and the Copeia 2014 Spatuloricaria revision by Fichberg et al., which explicitly confirmed S. nudiventris in both the La Plata River and São Francisco River basins in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.
No L-number has been assigned. Spatuloricaria nudiventris is virtually absent from the international ornamental trade. The common name 'Naked-belly Whiptail' is an English translation of the species epithet but is rarely encountered in commercial or hobbyist literature.
Morphology
Spatuloricaria nudiventris reaches approximately 8 in standard length (SL) — modest for a loricariid but long relative to body depth, consistent with the genus's characteristic attenuated, ribbon-like body plan. The genus name (Latin: spatula + lorica, the leather cuirass) describes the very flat, spatula-shaped profile when viewed from the side or above. Adults are fully armoured dorsally and laterally with overlapping bony scutes, but the ventral surface of the abdomen is substantially bare — hence nudiventris (Latin: nudus = naked, venter = belly), which directly differentiates this species from fully plated congeners.
The rostrum is flattened and broad, the mouth ventral and suctorial with fine teeth suited to aufwuchs grazing. The caudal fin has a pronounced elongated upper lobe (filament) that is especially developed in males, producing a noticeably asymmetric tail profile. The body is uniformly pale brown to tan with a darker dorsal surface; some specimens show faint longitudinal banding.
Sexual dimorphism in Spatuloricaria is consistent and reliable. Males are more robustly built in the head and pectoral girdle, develop odontodal growth from the cheeks and pectoral fin spines, and have pectoral spine spines that are typically thicker and slightly shorter than those of females. When viewed from above, the male's head forms an isosceles triangle shape, contrasting with the more equilateral triangle profile of females — a sexing criterion documented on PlanetCatfish based on observations of related congeners. Males also typically develop a longer caudal filament.
Habitat
Spatuloricaria nudiventris is confirmed from two geographically separate drainage systems: the Rio São Francisco basin (type locality) in central-eastern Brazil and the La Plata River system, with the latter extending through south-central Brazil and into Argentina and Uruguay (Fichberg et al. 2014, Copeia; CoF 2026). These two drainages are separated by the Espinhaço and Mantiqueira watersheds, making S. nudiventris a species with a notably disjunct distribution — likely reflecting a historical Pleistocene river-capture event that connected the two systems.
Within both basins, whiptail catfishes of the genus Spatuloricaria inhabit sandy or mixed sand-gravel substrates in slow to moderately flowing sections of larger rivers, streams, and their margins. The extremely flat body is an adaptation for life pressed against the bottom in areas with appreciable current; the broad, suctorial mouth allows firm adhesion to hard substrates when current increases. The species is demersal and benthic, spending the bulk of its time on or very near the substrate.
Water parameters in the São Francisco vary considerably along the river's 2,516 mi length, from clear-water headwaters in the highlands of Minas Gerais (pH ~6.5–7.0, moderate hardness) to the more turbid middle and lower reaches. La Plata tributaries are generally soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly alkaline.
Feeding
Like all Spatuloricaria, S. nudiventris is an aufwuchs and periphyton grazer. The mouth is designed for scraping biofilm — the microbial community of algae, cyanobacteria, fungi, and bacteria that coats submerged surfaces — from sand grains, fine gravel, root tangles, and submerged woody debris. FishBase records a trophic level of approximately 2.4, confirming the primarily herbivorous and detritivorous feeding guild.
In the context of the genus, Spatuloricaria are characteristically sand-sifting grazers: they may ingest loose sand while feeding, extracting organic material from between the grains in a behaviour analogous to that seen in some Farlowella and Loricaria. Gut content analyses from related species confirm that fine sedimentary organic particles, algal fragments, and diatoms make up the majority of the diet, with incidental invertebrates (chironomid larvae, small oligochaetes) present at low frequency.
In an aquarium context, this feeding mode translates to a requirement for sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, lettuce). The fish grazes throughout the photoperiod and can be more cryptic than active plecos, spending long periods pressed flat on the substrate.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour specific to S. nudiventris has not been documented in published literature, and the species has not been bred in captivity as far as PlanetCatfish records indicate (no registered breeding reports as of 2026). Information about mating in Spatuloricaria must therefore be inferred from the genus as a whole and from closely related whiptail loricariids in the tribe Harttiini.
In related genera (Loricaria, Rineloricaria, Pseudohemiodon), males are territorial during the breeding season and actively court females on open sandy or gravelly substrate rather than in caves. Males develop the elongated caudal filament and denser interopercular and pectoral odontodes — visible signs of sexual maturity and possibly signals in male–male competition. In Spatuloricaria more broadly, the pronounced head-shape dimorphism (isosceles vs. equilateral triangle) has been interpreted as a sexual signal and possibly an advantage in male-on-male lateral displacement contests.
Spawning likely occurs on hard substrate surfaces (flat stones, submerged wood, bare sandy patches) to which the adhesive eggs are attached. Based on the lack of cave-spawning morphology and the general open-substrate association of the genus, paternal guarding of eggs on open substrate — the strategy seen in Loricaria and allies — is the most probable reproductive mode.
Breeding
No captive breeding of S. nudiventris has been reported in the ornamental literature or on PlanetCatfish as of this writing. The IUCN Red List assessed the species as Data Deficient in 2018, indicating that even its wild reproductive ecology is poorly documented. Extrapolation from other Loricariinae therefore provides the best available framework.
In Loricaria and Rineloricaria (the most-studied genera in the tribe), eggs are laid in a single compact mass on a flat surface and brooded by the male, who fans them with his pectoral fins and mouths the clutch to maintain hygiene. Clutch sizes in smaller loricarines are typically in the range of 20–80 eggs. The eggs hatch after approximately 5–10 days at tropical temperatures (77–81 °F), and fry remain under the male's care for several days before dispersing.
For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding Spatuloricaria, the likely requirements include: a spacious tank with a fine sandy substrate, flat smooth stones or slate as spawning sites, excellent water quality, good current, and conditioning on a varied diet. A seasonal temperature drop of 36–37 °F followed by a gradual increase, combined with increased water changes, may help simulate seasonal cues. Given the open-water spawning strategy of loricarines, an open-bottomed cave or inverted pot lid can provide a compromise between shelter and the flat-surface spawning site the fish likely prefers.
In the aquarium
Spatuloricaria nudiventris is an extreme rarity in the ornamental trade and is not commercially collected or exported. Aquarists who encounter it are most likely to do so as incidental bycatch in wild-collected shipments from Brazil. The species' relative obscurity means that almost no first-hand husbandry accounts exist in the English-language hobbyist literature.
Based on its biology and the requirements of closely related congeners and loricarines generally, the minimum accommodation would be a tank of at least 47 in (40–55 US gal), heavily filtered with gentle-to-moderate current, and furnished with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate and flat stones for grazing and resting. The fish will spend most of its time pressed flat on the bottom. Water temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness suits both the São Francisco and La Plata populations. Oxygen saturation should be high; poor oxygenation is likely to cause stress.
Feeding is straightforward if the right foods are provided: sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette or cucumber, and occasionally frozen bloodworm or small invertebrates for protein. Live algae on smooth stones is appreciated. The fish is peaceful toward non-competing tankmates of similar size; it will not tolerate aggressive or territorial species that contest its preferred bottom zone. Two males in a small tank may compete for substrate territory, particularly near potential spawning sites. Large, well-planted tanks with multiple flat stone territories can accommodate a small group.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Spatuloricaria nudiventris as Data Deficient in 2018, reflecting genuine uncertainty about its population status across the disjunct São Francisco and La Plata range. The species is not commercially collected in significant numbers for the ornamental trade and is not an important food fish; its primary conservation concern is the same suite of threats facing non-charismatic, data-poor freshwater fishes throughout South America.
The Rio São Francisco has been dramatically altered by dam construction, agricultural water abstraction, deforestation in the riparian zone (affecting sedimentation and seasonal flow regimes), and pollution from agricultural inputs. The species' apparent distribution in the upper Paraná and La Plata system means it also falls within the geographic footprint of some of the world's largest hydroelectric installations (Itaipu and the Paraná cascade), though its abundance and sensitivity to these alterations are unknown.
The IUCN Data Deficient listing should not be interpreted as an absence of concern — it reflects an absence of data. Given the documented declines of other benthic loricariids in impacted South American rivers, targeted population surveys of S. nudiventris in the São Francisco and La Plata tributaries would be a worthwhile priority for regional ichthyologists.
