Ancistrus maculatus carries a paradox at its core: described more than 140 years ago from Amazon collections, it remains one of the few Ancistrus that cannot be reliably assessed for conservation status — not because it is rare, but because its original type series is a mix of at least two different species, leaving the name tethered to an identity that has never been formally resolved.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus maculatus was described by Franz Steindachner in 1881 in Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe (vol. 43, p. 123 [23]), under the original combination Chaetostomus cirrhosus maculata. Isbrücker raised the taxon to species rank in 1980 (p. 70), producing the current valid combination Ancistrus maculatus recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The central problem with A. maculatus is its type series. Steindachner's syntypes were collected from multiple localities — including Cudajas, Obidos, Rio Tajapoura, and Rio Chagres — that span geographically distant drainages. Specimens from the Chagres River (Panama) have since been referred to a distinct species, Ancistrus chagresi, meaning the syntype series almost certainly contains more than one taxon. Until a lectotype is formally designated from the remaining Brazilian material and the species is revised against that fixed name-bearer, the distribution, morphology, and identity of A. maculatus in the strict sense remain uncertain. The IUCN Red List flags this directly as the reason for its Data Deficient assessment (2020).

The epithet maculatus means 'spotted' in Latin, a descriptor presumably applied to the fish's colour pattern. Within Loricariidae, A. maculatus belongs to subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini (Armbruster, 2004).

Morphology

The maximum recorded standard length for A. maculatus is 4.5 in SL (Fisch-Muller, 2003, cited as Ref. 36713 in FishBase). Beyond this figure, morphological data specific to the species are limited by the taxonomic uncertainty of the type series — any description drawn from specimens assigned to A. maculatus in collections must be treated cautiously, since some proportion of those specimens may belong to A. chagresi or other allied taxa.

The body plan is that of a typical Ancistrus: dorsoventrally flattened, encased in bony scutes, with a suctorial mouth positioned ventrally. The epithet 'maculatus' implies a spotted patterning, consistent with the widely distributed cryptic coloration — dark ground colour overlaid with pale spots or reticulations — seen across many Amazonian members of the genus.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-wide pattern. Adult males develop branched, bushy tentacles on the snout — the 'bristlenose' or 'bushnose' trademark — that are substantially more elaborate than the shorter tentacles or tentacle-free snout typical of females. Females may develop minor tentacle fringes along the snout margin. Males defending cavities may additionally exhibit longer interopercular spines.

Habitat

FishBase places A. maculatus in the Amazon River basin of Brazil. This distributional assignment reflects the non-Chagres syntypes and the general understanding that the Panamanian specimens belong to A. chagresi, but until a lectotype is designated from confirmed Brazilian material, the range cannot be stated with precision.

As a demersal, benthic loricariid, A. maculatus would be expected to occupy freshwater rivers and streams — rocky or woody substrates with sufficient current to maintain well-oxygenated water. The species is listed as a facultative or obligate air-breather, a common trait across Loricariidae that aids survival in hypoxic conditions during dry-season low-water periods. No habitat data specific to A. maculatus (as distinct from co-occurring, misidentified specimens) are available in the published literature.

Feeding

Ancistrus species are algae and biofilm grazers, and A. maculatus is presumed to follow the same dietary strategy. The suctorial mouth with rasping teeth is adapted for scraping periphyton, diatoms, and organic biofilm from hard substrates such as rock and submerged wood. Detritus and incidentally ingested invertebrates round out the diet.

In captivity, Ancistrus in general accept a wide range of vegetable-based prepared foods: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and similar soft vegetables. Regular access to algae on aquarium surfaces provides an important foraging activity and nutritional supplement. Meaty foods are tolerated in small quantities but should not dominate the diet.

Mating

No specific observations of mating behaviour in A. maculatus appear in the literature or hobbyist records, and PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports for the species. General Ancistrus reproductive biology applies: males are territorial and defend preferred cavity sites against rival males, using their snout tentacles and interopercular spines in agonistic displays. A male with a suitable cavity will court passing females; receptive females enter, spawn, and then leave the cavity to the guarding male.

The taxonomic uncertainty surrounding A. maculatus means it is essentially unknown whether any fish labelled as this species in a hobbyist collection is actually the nominal taxon, further complicating the assembly of any species-specific behavioural record.

Breeding

Ancistrus maculatus is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, following the reproductive pattern conserved across the genus. The male guards the clutch of adhesive eggs within a defended cavity, fanning them continuously to ensure oxygenation and removing any that fail to develop. Fry remain in or near the cave under paternal oversight until they are mobile and self-sufficient.

No breeding records specific to A. maculatus are documented. Given the confusion with A. chagresi in the type series, any historical aquarium breeding accounts that attributed a spotted Amazonian Ancistrus to this species name should be treated with appropriate caution. Care for unverified specimens matching the general A. maculatus description would parallel that for other mid-sized Amazonian Ancistrus.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus maculatus does not appear in the ornamental trade under its scientific name, and hobbyist records are absent from PlanetCatfish. The species is not traded commercially as a distinct taxon. This is consistent with the broader Ancistrus situation in the hobby: the genus is notoriously difficult to identify at the species level, and most trade fish are labelled generically as 'bristlenose pleco' or attributed to A. cirrhosus regardless of actual origin.

If a fish positively identified as A. maculatus were maintained, care would parallel that for other Amazonian Ancistrus of similar size: a well-filtered aquarium with ample hiding sites in driftwood and rock, a primarily vegetable-based diet supplemented with algae wafers, and water quality consistent with an Amazonian origin — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, with stable temperature in the tropical range. At under 4.5 in SL, this is a manageable size for a modestly sized aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus maculatus as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2020. The Data Deficient designation does not imply rarity; it reflects a genuine inability to evaluate the species' conservation status due to taxonomic uncertainty. The syntype series includes specimens from geographically disparate localities — including the Chagres River, Panama, whose specimens belong to A. chagresi — meaning the distribution, population size, and ecology of A. maculatus in the strict sense cannot be determined without prior resolution of the type series.

The IUCN assessment recommends designation of a lectotype from the Brazilian syntypes and a formal taxonomic revision as prerequisites for any meaningful conservation evaluation. Until this work is completed, the conservation standing of A. maculatus will remain indeterminate. The broader Amazon basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation and water quality degradation, but these cannot be linked to the nominal species without knowing its actual range.
