Named for a Portuguese word carrying the weight of deep, unresolvable longing, Ancistrus saudades was described in 2019 from the upper Amazon tributaries of Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil — a compact bristlenose catfish from clear Guiana Shield streams on the cusp between South America's two great drainage systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus saudades was formally described by Leandro de Souza, Donald Taphorn, and Jonathan Armbruster in 2019 as part of a comprehensive review of Ancistrus from northwestern South America and Panama, published in Zootaxa (volume 4552, pages 1–67, figures 21–22). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it as a valid species with genus id 406 and species id 75695; no synonyms are listed.

The type locality is a creek at the second wooden bridge from the Moco-Moco power station — a tributary of the Takutu River in Region 9 (Rupununi), Guyana, at approximately 3.303°N, 59.650°W. The Takutu is a headwater of the Branco River, itself a major left-bank tributary of the Negro, placing the type locality firmly within the Amazon drainage.

Ancistrus is the largest genus in the tribe Ancistrini (subfamily Hypostominae) and is diagnosed by the presence of branched, tentacle-like rostral appendages on the snout of adult males — a character absent in most other loricariid genera and unique to Ancistrus within Hypostominae. The genus currently comprises well over 70 described species, with many more awaiting formal description.

The species epithet saudades is taken from Portuguese: saudades denotes a melancholic longing or nostalgic yearning for something absent or unattainable — an emotion embedded in Lusophone culture and considered nearly untranslatable into other languages. The authors state that the name reflects the feeling of longing experienced during the collection, description, and writing process for this species.

Morphology

Ancistrus saudades reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in SL (males or unsexed; FishBase Ref. 120145). As in all Ancistrus, the body is covered in overlapping bony scutes, the head is broad and depressed, and the mouth is positioned ventrally and functions as a sucker. The lips are broad and fleshy, bearing rows of fine teeth suited for scraping biofilm and algae from hard substrates.

The most immediately recognisable character of adult male Ancistrus is the elaborately branched rostral tentacles on the snout — fleshy, multi-branched appendages that are absent or rudimentary in females and juveniles. The function of these tentacles is debated, but they likely play a role in male-to-male assessment and mate choice. Females may develop short, unbranched rostral projections along the snout margin, but nothing approaching the elaborate branched clusters of males.

Habitat

Ancistrus saudades is known from the Amazon, Negro, Branco/Roraima, and Takutu river systems across Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil. The type locality — a small creek tributary of the Takutu in the Rupununi savanna region of southern Guyana — lies in a geologically complex zone where the Guiana Shield meets the Amazon lowlands.

The Rupununi is a seasonally inundated savanna; small streams in this region typically run clear to tea-coloured (blackwater influence is common in the Negro and Branco drainages), warm, soft, and acidic. Rocky substrates and submerged wood are characteristic Ancistrus microhabitats. The broader distribution across the Negro and Branco systems places the species in some of the most naturally low-conductivity, low-pH water in South America — conditions that reflect the soft, nutrient-poor character of Guiana Shield catchments.

Feeding

Ancistrus species are primarily aufwuchs grazers and biofilm scrapers. The ventral sucker mouth and fine teeth are well adapted for rasping periphyton, algae, and the microbial films that colonise submerged rock and wood surfaces. Organic detritus and small invertebrates associated with biofilm are also consumed incidentally.

In the aquarium, Ancistrus in general accept a wide range of vegetable-based foods — algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette, cucumber, and leafy greens — alongside naturally occurring algae growth in the tank. Occasional protein supplementation with live or frozen invertebrates is accepted. No feeding data specific to A. saudades under controlled conditions has been published, but the standard Ancistrus diet is a reasonable baseline.

Mating

As in other Ancistrus, breeding males in A. saudades would be expected to defend cave or crevice sites, using their elaborated rostral tentacles in displays to rival males and prospective mates. Intrasexual competition among males can be intense in confined spaces; dominant males secure and maintain spawning cavities, while subordinate males are excluded.

The degree of sexual dimorphism in rostral tentacle development provides a reliable visual sexing character once fish reach breeding size. No courtship or mating observations specific to A. saudades have been published.

Breeding

Ancistrus are among the most frequently bred loricariids in the hobby, and the general cave-spawning pattern with paternal brood care applies across the genus. Males select and guard a tight cavity — a hollow section of wood, a ceramic tube, or a crevice between rocks — and females deposit adhesive eggs on the cavity walls during spawning. The male then remains with the clutch, fanning the eggs to maintain oxygen flow and removing dead or fungused eggs.

Clutch sizes in Ancistrus vary widely by species and female size; dozens to over a hundred eggs are possible. Fry hatch bearing large yolk sacs and remain in or near the cave for several days before becoming free-swimming and beginning to graze on surfaces. Males continue guarding the fry for a period after hatching.

No breeding accounts specific to A. saudades are available. Given that it was described only in 2019 and is not yet established in the trade, captive reproduction has not been documented.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus saudades is not established in the ornamental fish trade and no husbandry reports are available. Its origin in soft, warm Guiana Shield tributaries suggests that water chemistry matching those conditions — low to moderate hardness, pH tending acidic, temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s °C — would be appropriate if the species becomes available.

At 4.5 in SL, A. saudades is a compact Ancistrus comparable in size to the commonly kept bristlenose plecos of aquarium culture. Standard Ancistrus husbandry principles — caves or hollow wood for shelter and spawning, algae-rich diet supplemented with vegetables, good water quality with regular partial changes — would provide a reasonable starting point. The species has no L-number designation.

Conservation

Ancistrus saudades was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List on 22 December 2020. The assessment reflects a distribution across multiple river systems in Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil — the Amazon, Negro, Branco, and Takutu drainages — with no evidence of significant population decline or major threats specific to this species.

The upper Negro and Branco systems are largely within or adjacent to large protected areas, including the extensive indigenous territories of the Brazilian state of Roraima. Deforestation and agricultural expansion in the Rupununi region of Guyana represent longer-term pressures on stream habitats in parts of the range, but the species' occurrence across multiple independent drainages buffers it against localised threats.
