One of the smallest armoured catfishes in the Atlantic drainage system, Parotocinclus doceanus is a thread-fine micro-grazer endemic to the Rio Doce basin of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais — a river system that in 2015 became the site of Brazil's most devastating mine tailings disaster, raising urgent questions about the long-term future of this and every other species that calls the Doce home.

Taxonomy & naming

Parotocinclus doceanus was originally described by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 under the name Microlepidogaster doceanus, based on material collected from the Rio Doce in Espírito Santo, Brazil. The holotype (unique) is deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP, formerly DZSASP), catalogue number 1016. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — species ID 5311) credits the transfer to Parotocinclus to Garavello (1977), in the monographic treatment of the genus published in Arquivos de Zoologia de São Paulo 28(2): 1–37. The valid combination Parotocinclus doceanus (Miranda Ribeiro, 1918) was confirmed by Ferraris (2007: 282) in his Checklist of catfishes. Authority appears in parentheses because the species was moved from its original genus.

Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the dwarf suckermouth catfishes — a clade of miniaturised loricariids that inhabit riffle zones, leaf litter, and rock surfaces throughout lowland South American drainages. The genus was last comprehensively revised by Garavello (1977) and contains several dozen valid species, many of which are narrow endemics in Atlantic coastal drainages of Brazil.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL), placing P. doceanus firmly in the micro-loricariid category. The body plan follows the classic Hypoptopomatinae pattern: a dorsoventrally flattened anterior half, a narrow caudal peduncle, and complete coverage by interlocking keeled scutes that render the fish essentially impenetrable to all but the most determined predator. The abdomen is plated in the typical Parotocinclus fashion, with the plates arranged in a distinctive configuration that helped Garavello diagnose the genus.

The ventral, suctorial mouth bears short, fine teeth adapted for rasping epilithic biofilm and soft algae from hard substrates rather than excavating wood or consuming larger plant material. Colouration in preserved material and live specimens is typically brown or dark olive above, paler below, often with some mottling that provides cryptic patterning against sand, gravel, and leaf litter.

Sexual dimorphism follows the general loricariid pattern. Breeding males typically develop fine interopercular odontodes on the cheek region; ripe females are noticeably broader-bodied when viewed from above. Detailed dimorphism data specific to this species are not well-documented in the literature.

Habitat

Parotocinclus doceanus is endemic to the Rio Doce basin, distributed across Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states in southeastern Brazil. The type locality is the Rio Doce itself in Espírito Santo. The Rio Doce is one of the largest river systems in Atlantic Brazil, rising in the highlands of Minas Gerais and flowing some 528 mi to the Atlantic coast at Regência, Espírito Santo. Prior to the 2015 disaster, it was characterised in its mid and lower reaches by warm, seasonally variable, moderately clear water flowing over rocky and sandy substrates.

Like most Hypoptopomatinae, P. doceanus is presumed to occupy riffle and run habitats with hard substrates — rock faces, gravel bars, and submerged wood — where biofilm and algal growth are most productive. Members of the genus are known to be facultative air-breathers, an adaptation common in Loricariidae that allows survival during low-oxygen events such as seasonal low-water periods.

No published water chemistry data for the species at its collection localities are available in the sources consulted.

Feeding

Parotocinclus doceanus is a benthic micro-grazer — an aufwuchs specialist — feeding primarily by rasping epilithic biofilm, periphyton, and fine algal mats from hard substrates using its fine, multicusped teeth. This diet mirrors that of closely related genera such as Hisonotus and Otothyropsis within the Hypoptopomatinae, all of which exploit the thin but protein-rich and highly productive biofilm layer that coats submerged rocks, wood, and leaf surfaces in well-lit, flowing tropical streams.

In aquaria, related Hypoptopomatinae accept algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched leafy vegetables, and fine sinking foods. There is no specific captive feeding literature for P. doceanus, but its gut morphology and tooth structure indicate a diet dominated by algae and detrital fine particulates rather than wood or macrophytes.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Parotocinclus doceanus are available. Based on the general biology of the Hypoptopomatinae, males are presumed to become territorial in relation to preferred spawning sites, and the development of interopercular odontodes in males likely plays a role in male–male competition and female assessment. Gravid females are recognisably broader-bodied than males of comparable length, a characteristic used to identify reproductive condition in congeners and related genera.

The seasonal hydrology of the Rio Doce — a marked wet–dry cycle with significant temperature and flow variation — likely drives reproductive timing, as is typical for loricariids from seasonally variable Atlantic drainages.

Breeding

No breeding reports for Parotocinclus doceanus in captivity appear in the available literature. The species has not established itself in the ornamental trade and is essentially unknown to hobbyists. Based on the reproductive biology of Hypoptopomatinae broadly, spawning is expected to involve adhesive eggs deposited on hard surfaces or within sheltered microhabitats, with at least paternal guarding behaviour during incubation — a pattern documented in related genera including Otothyris and Schizolecis.

The extremely small adult size and narrow endemic distribution make wild collection for the hobby unlikely and captive propagation data correspondingly scarce.

In the aquarium

Parotocinclus doceanus does not appear to be established in the ornamental trade. As a narrow endemic of a severely impacted river system it is not available through normal hobby channels. The following notes are based on the general requirements of Hypoptopomatinae micro-grazers.

Species in this subfamily are suited to small to medium aquaria (15–30 US gal) with strong filtration, good oxygenation, and soft to moderate water flow. A temperature range appropriate for Atlantic Brazil lowlands — approximately 72–79 °F — would be suitable. Décor should include smooth river cobble, flat slate, and pieces of driftwood, all of which support biofilm growth. LED lighting that promotes algae on glass and rock surfaces is beneficial. Fine, soft sand for the exposed substrate reduces abrasion to the delicate ventral surface.

Intraspecific aggression is typically mild in Hypoptopomatinae; multiple individuals can coexist if sufficient grazing territory is available. Community tankmates should be small and peaceful: small characids, rasboras, small Corydoras, and non-predatory dwarf cichlids are generally compatible.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus doceanus as Least Concern in November 2018, noting its endemism to the Rio Doce basin. That assessment predates or coincided with the full understanding of the ecological aftermath of the Fundão tailings dam collapse on 5 November 2015 — the largest mine tailings disaster in Brazilian history. The dam failure at the Samarco iron ore complex released approximately 40–60 million cubic metres of iron oxide tailings into the Rio Doce watershed, killing aquatic life along roughly 373 mi of river and delta, depositing a thick layer of sediment on the riverbed, and fundamentally altering the light environment, substrate composition, and water chemistry of the system for years afterward.

As an endemic species whose entire range falls within the Rio Doce basin, P. doceanus was directly exposed to this event. The 2018 LC assessment did not re-evaluate population status in light of the disaster's long-term effects; a reassessment with post-2015 field data would be a scientific priority. Recovery of the Rio Doce's aquatic communities has been slow and uneven, with some stretches showing partial biological recovery while others remain biologically impoverished. The long-term status of this species is therefore more precarious than the current Red List category suggests.
