Taxonomy & naming
Deuterodon sazimai was described by Santos and Castro in 2014. The original description placed the species in Probolodus before its assignment to Deuterodon was confirmed; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Deuterodon sazimai (Santos & Castro, 2014), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus. The type locality lies within the Rio Itapemirim and Rio Doce basins of southeastern Brazil, two drainages that empty into the Atlantic coast of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states.
Deuterodon is a genus of small to medium-sized characins within the speciose family Characidae, confined to the Atlantic coastal forest river systems of eastern Brazil — a biogeographically distinct region that has yielded a high proportion of endemic freshwater fishes. Several Deuterodon species share overlapping distributions in the southeastern Atlantic drainages, and morphological features used to diagnose the genus include details of tooth shape and jaw structure. The genus was historically confused with Probolodus, which is reflected in the original description; molecular and osteological work has since clarified the boundaries between these taxa.
Morphology
Deuterodon sazimai is a slender-bodied, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded length of 2 in standard length (SL). The body form is typical of the genus: an elongate but moderately deep profile, a complete lateral line, and the characteristic adipose fin present in most characins. Coloration in life has not been described in detail in available sources, but members of Deuterodon are generally silvery or olive-grey with a midlateral stripe or blotch pattern common to small Atlantic-drainage tetras.
Beyond overall size and meristic characters documented at description, detailed published data on colour pattern, fin-ray counts, and scalation specific to D. sazimai remain sparse in accessible sources. The species can be distinguished from close relatives by the combination of characters employed in the original description, including tooth morphology — features that reflect its scale-scraping dietary habit, which is shared with the closely related genus Probolodus.
Habitat
Deuterodon sazimai inhabits freshwater streams and rivers of the Rio Itapemirim and Rio Doce basins in southeastern Brazil, a region of the Atlantic Forest biome. Both drainages are medium-sized river systems with headwaters in the highlands of Minas Gerais and lower reaches crossing Espírito Santo before reaching the Atlantic coast. The Rio Doce in particular is a major river with varied habitat across its length, ranging from cool highland streams to warmer lowland reaches.
Water conditions in these drainages are typically warm tropical to subtropical, with temperatures around 77 °F and near-neutral pH. The Atlantic Forest river systems where this species occurs are generally soft to moderately hard, clear to lightly stained freshwater environments, often with riparian vegetation contributing leaf litter — consistent with the leaf fragments recorded in the species' stomach contents. Detailed microhabitat data specific to D. sazimai beyond basin-level distribution are not available in accessible literature.
Feeding
Deuterodon sazimai has an unusual and eclectic recorded diet that includes fish scales, leaf fragments, and insects. The inclusion of fish scales places this species in a functional guild of scale-scraping characins — a specialisation seen in Probolodus and a handful of other Neotropical tetras, involving teeth adapted for rasping scales from the flanks of other fish without killing them. The presence of leaf fragments and insects alongside scales suggests that D. sazimai is not an obligate scale-eater but rather an omnivore that supplements scale-scraping with more conventional foraging on invertebrates and plant detritus. This dietary flexibility is common in small Neotropical characins, which tend to exploit seasonally variable food resources in their river systems. In an aquarium setting, the scale-scraping habit means the species should not be housed with slow-moving or large-finned tankmates that may become targets.
Mating
No specific mating behaviour has been documented in the literature available for Deuterodon sazimai. Based on the biology of the family Characidae and the genus Deuterodon, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the reproductive mode characteristic of the great majority of small Neotropical characids. Males likely pursue females during spawning events, and eggs are probably scattered among fine-leaved vegetation, leaf litter, or substrate interstices in nature.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, follows the general characid pattern of females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and fuller in the abdomen when in spawning condition, while males may show no obvious external distinction outside the breeding period. No aquarium breeding account or detailed field reproductive data appear to be available for this species.
Breeding
Deuterodon sazimai has not been reported in the aquarium hobby literature, and no captive breeding account is available in accessible sources. If kept successfully, breeding would be expected to follow the standard characid model: egg-scattering into fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental involvement. Adults would need to be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation, a precaution standard practice for characids of this size.
Incubation and fry-rearing parameters are unknown but can be estimated from comparable small Neotropical tetras: eggs likely hatch within 24–48 hours at temperatures around 77 °F, with free-swimming fry requiring infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Data sparse — practical captive breeding guidance must await hobbyist reports.
In the aquarium
Deuterodon sazimai is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby; no trade reports or dedicated husbandry accounts appear in available sources. Given its small size of under 2.5 in SL and probable origin in warm, near-neutral southeastern Brazilian streams, it could in principle be maintained in a well-planted aquarium with soft to moderately hard water at around 75–79 °F and a pH near neutral, conditions typical of Atlantic-drainage Brazilian tetras.
The scale-scraping component of its diet is a significant husbandry consideration: tankmates with large or flowing fins, or slow-moving species, may be targeted. Housing with similarly active, similarly sized, short-finned fish would be advisable. The species is not known to be available through the ornamental fish trade, and any specimens would most likely derive from scientific collections rather than commercial sources. Data sparse — practical care guidance must await hobbyist experience.
Conservation
Deuterodon sazimai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 18 May 2022. The Least Concern rating indicates that the species does not currently meet the threshold criteria for a threatened category based on available distribution and population data.
Nonetheless, both the Rio Itapemirim and Rio Doce basins have experienced significant environmental pressure. The Rio Doce catchment suffered one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters in 2015 when a tailings dam failure at the Samarco iron ore mine released approximately 40–60 million cubic metres of iron ore waste into the river system, devastating aquatic communities from the headwaters to the Atlantic coast. The long-term impact on endemic fishes, including Deuterodon species in affected parts of the basin, remains an active concern among Brazilian ichthyologists and conservation bodies. The 2022 IUCN assessment predates a full accounting of post-disaster population recovery and should be viewed in that context.
