Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia ephippiata was formally described by Jonathan Armbruster, David Werneke, and Melanie Tan in 2015 in the journal ZooKeys (480: 97–123). The paper described three new species of saddled loricariid catfishes and undertook a broader review of Hemiancistrus, Peckoltia, and allied genera — a significant phylogenetic and taxonomic revision that reorganised several genera within tribe Ancistrini. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Peckoltia ephippiata as a valid species, authority Armbruster, Werneke & Tan, 2015 (without parentheses).
The type locality is Rio Leitão, a tributary within the rio Madeira drainage in Brazil. The rio Madeira is one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon and drains the Bolivian and Brazilian shield, carrying a mix of white-, clear-, and blackwater depending on the tributary. The rio Leitão lies within this system, placing P. ephippiata in a large and biodiverse river system that also harbours numerous other Loricariidae.
Within Peckoltia, the 2015 revision aligned P. ephippiata with other species bearing a saddled dorsal pattern — a character state that may represent either convergence or shared ancestry within portions of the genus. No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned to this species, which has not entered mainstream ornamental trade channels in significant numbers.
Morphology
Adults of P. ephippiata reach approximately 4 in standard length (SL), making it one of the larger members of the genus and somewhat bigger than the more familiar small peckoltias. The body form is elongated in the typical loricariid manner, covered in overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral suckermouth and strong pectoral spines.
The defining colour character is the presence of dark saddles across the dorsum — hence both the specific epithet and the common name 'saddled peckoltia'. These saddles contrast with the paler lateral flanks and underside, producing the 'ephippiata' (saddled) pattern from which the species takes its name. The dorsal fin lacks the spots or bands seen in many related species, and the head bears small, faint spots rather than a more strongly patterned surface.
Morphologically, P. ephippiata is distinguished from congeners by several characters: the absence of spots or bands in the dorsal fin; small faint spots restricted to the head; well-developed colouration and eyes (not a cave-adapted or depauperate colour form); the dentaries meeting at an angle greater than 90° (a jaw geometry measurable from radiographs or cleared-and-stained specimens); slight keels on the lateral plate series, particularly the median series; and the presence of platelets on the central abdomen posterior to the pectoral girdle — a character that varies across the genus. The dorsal fin has 9 soft rays and the anal fin 5 soft rays. The species also exhibits facultative air-breathing — a capacity recorded in several Loricariidae that inhabit seasonally hypoxic environments.
Habitat
The known distribution of P. ephippiata centres on the rio Madeira drainage of Brazil, with the type locality in Rio Leitão. The rio Madeira system is characterised by great diversity of water types: whitewater tributaries carrying Andean sediment, clearwater streams over lateritic soils, and blackwater channels draining forest peat and leaf litter. The precise water type of the Rio Leitão at the type locality has not been fully characterised in the published description, but Madeira drainage tributaries in this region often present moderately clear to blackwater conditions with relatively low conductivity and mildly acidic to neutral pH.
Loricariidae of the Peckoltia group typically favour rocky substrates, submerged wood, and root tangles, often in areas with moderate current. The saddled pattern of P. ephippiata suggests a fish adapted to visually broken substrates — dappled light on leaf litter or mottled rock surfaces — where the dorsal saddles disrupt the outline against the background. The capacity for facultative air-breathing suggests the species may also exploit seasonally low-oxygen environments, such as shallow, forest-flooded areas during high water in the Amazon's annual flood pulse.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of P. ephippiata in the wild has been published. Its morphology and phylogenetic position within Peckoltia place it among the aufwuchs and biofilm feeders of the genus: species that rasp algae, diatoms, periphyton, detritus, and associated invertebrates from hard surfaces including rocks, submerged wood, and roots.
Unlike the Panaqolus / Panaque wood-eating lineage, Peckoltia species are not obligate xylophores (wood-eaters), but they do graze surfaces of submerged timber and may ingest organic detritus settled on wood. In the aquarium, related Peckoltia species respond well to a varied diet: high-quality sinking pellets and wafers, spirulina-based algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and sweet potato. Occasional protein supplements such as frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp are accepted. Driftwood should be provided for grazing substrate and behavioural enrichment, even if it is not a primary food source.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship in P. ephippiata have been published in the scientific or hobby literature. In related species of Peckoltia and allied ancistrins, males typically become territorial around suitable cave or crevice structures during reproductive condition, developing elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) that are used in male–male interactions and potentially in mate assessment by females.
Given the general Loricariidae pattern and the phylogenetic placement of P. ephippiata, the most plausible mating system involves male territory establishment, male advertisement through odontode development, and female selection of a cavity for spawning. No specific captive breeding data for this species have been reported.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding records for P. ephippiata are known from the scientific or hobby literature. The species was described only in 2015 and has not entered the ornamental trade in significant numbers, meaning opportunities for captive observation have been limited.
By analogy with related peckoltias and with Loricariidae generally, spawning would be expected to take place in an enclosed cavity — a tight crevice between rocks, a hollow section of driftwood, or a manufactured ceramic cave — with the male guarding and fanning the adhesive eggs until hatching. Conditioning adults with a varied diet, clean water, and seasonal temperature and photoperiod cues would be appropriate first steps for anyone attempting captive breeding. The somewhat larger size of P. ephippiata (up to 4 in SL) compared to smaller peckoltias suggests it may need proportionally larger cave structures.
In the aquarium
Peckoltia ephippiata is a rare species in the ornamental trade, with no assigned L-number and limited availability. Any specimens encountered are likely wild-caught imports from Brazil. Hobbyists should verify provenance and legal collection status before purchase, and should not acquire this species in quantities that could affect wild populations.
If kept, the species' Madeira drainage origin suggests water parameters in the soft to moderately soft range: temperature approximately 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.2, low to moderate conductivity. Good filtration and oxygenation are important — as with all loricariids, these fish produce substantial waste relative to their size. The faculty for air-breathing may provide some buffer in suboptimal oxygenation, but clean, well-aerated water remains the appropriate standard.
The aquarium should provide structured habitat: smooth or lateritic rocks arranged into crevices and caves, supplemented with pieces of driftwood of varied sizes. The saddled colour pattern suggests a fish comfortable in visually complex, dappled environments with mixed light and shadow. A tank of 20–30 US gal would be appropriate for one or two adults. Community tankmates should be peaceable mid-water fish that tolerate soft, warm, mildly acidic water — small characins, slender South American cichlids, and Corydoras are compatible options. Avoid housing with other similar-sized plecos in small tanks to minimise territorial conflict.
Conservation
Peckoltia ephippiata is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) on the IUCN Red List, meaning it has not undergone a formal assessment since its description in 2015. The species was too recently described at the time of the most recent relevant IUCN Loricariidae assessments to be included, and has not been separately assessed as of 2026.
The rio Madeira drainage — where this species is known — faces significant pressures from hydroelectric development, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and artisanal and industrial gold mining. The Santo Antônio and Jirau dams on the main-stem Madeira River altered flow regimes and sediment transport substantially, with downstream effects on fish communities that are still being quantified. Tributaries like the Rio Leitão may be less directly affected by main-channel impoundments but are subject to watershed-level deforestation and erosion.
Given the extremely limited distributional data available for P. ephippiata and the habitat pressures in the Madeira basin, a precautionary approach is warranted. Formal IUCN assessment should be a priority as distributional data are gathered through museum specimens and targeted surveys.
