Peckoltia furcata is a compact, saddled loricariid from the upper Amazon — the Ucayali and Marañón river systems of Peru and Ecuador — carrying the common name 'Forktail Pleco' in reference to the bold, forked or branching pale markings that break its dark dorsal saddles. Originally described as Chaetostomus furcatus by Henry Fowler in 1940, it was subsequently moved to Peckoltia by Fisch-Muller and confirmed there by multiple phylogenetic studies. At roughly 3.5 in SL, it sits comfortably in the mid-sized pleco bracket — versatile as a community fish and unfussy in water chemistry, though largely unheralded compared with the flashier Xingu specialists in the same genus.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was first described by Henry W. Fowler in 1940 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 91, pages 238–239, Figures 28–29), under the combination Chaetostomus furcatus — though the Catalog of Fishes notes that the original genus was correctly Chaetostoma (not Chaetostomus). The holotype (ANSP 68655, a unique specimen) was collected at Contamana, on the Río Ucayali in Peru. The CoF treats this as the valid type locality.

Subsequent authorities placed the species in Peckoltia: the authoritative checklist of Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. (2003) used the combination Peckoltia furcata, which was confirmed by Ferraris (2007), Armbruster (2008), de Oliveira et al. (2010, 2012), and most recently by Armbruster, Werneke & Tan in ZooKeys 480 (2015) and Armbruster & Lujan (2016). The current valid combination as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (June 2026 update) is Peckoltia furcata (Fowler, 1940), with Chaetostoma furcatum Fowler 1940 as the basionym.

Peckoltia belongs to subfamily Hypostominae (tribe Ancistrini), and the 2015 phylogenetic revision by Armbruster et al. placed P. furcata within a well-supported Peckoltia core based on molecular evidence. The species lacks an L-number, having been formally described before the provisional number system began and remaining a relatively uncommon import in the European and North American hobby.

Morphology

Peckoltia furcata reaches approximately 3.5 in SL (PlanetCatfish, after Fowler's type series). The body plan is typical of smaller Hypostominae: laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, broadly depressed at the head, with an expansive ventral oral disc and overlapping bony scutes in longitudinal rows. The caudal peduncle is slender and the caudal fin forked — this 'forktail' feature, relative to the more rounded or slightly lunate caudal fins seen in some congeners, contributes to the common name alongside the patterning.

The colour pattern is the most distinctive feature: the dorsal surface bears a series of dark brown to black saddles or blotches that alternate with paler interspaces and are overlaid with branching, pale gold or cream vermiculations — the 'furcate' (forked) patterning that names the species. The pattern varies somewhat with age and condition; juveniles may show it most crisply. The ventral surface is pale.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Peckoltia generic pattern: males develop odontodes (recurved tooth-like structures) along the first pectoral-fin ray and across the posterior half of the dorsal body surface during breeding condition, while females remain essentially smooth-bodied and develop a noticeably wider girth behind the pectoral fins when gravid, visible in dorsal view. A rounded, swollen papilla is the most reliable sign of female identity in conditioned adults.

Habitat

Peckoltia furcata is distributed in the upper Amazon drainage, primarily in the Ucayali and Marañón river systems of Peru, with records also from adjacent areas of Ecuador. The Ucayali is a large, turbid whitewater river draining the eastern Andean foothills; its waters are relatively neutral in pH (6.5–7.5) and carry a moderate mineral load from Andean runoff, in contrast to the acidic blackwaters of the Rio Negro that characterise the habitat of many other Peckoltia species.

The type locality — Contamana, on the lower Ucayali — is a mid-elevation Amazonian town set in lowland floodplain forest. The fish is benthic, associated with rocky or mixed rocky-sandy substrates and submerged wood tangles in areas of moderate current. The Ucayali basin is subject to dramatic seasonal fluctuation between high and low water, and populations of P. furcata presumably shift microhabitat accordingly, concentrating in deeper pools and channel margins during the dry season when shallow rocky riffles may become exposed.

Water temperatures in the upper Amazon lowlands typically range from 75–82 °F. The combination of moderate hardness, near-neutral pH, and warm temperatures is broadly compatible with standard community aquarium conditions, making P. furcata less demanding in water chemistry than species from extreme blackwater or clearwater systems.

Feeding

Peckoltia furcata is an omnivorous benthic feeder, as are most members of the genus. The dentition — small, bicuspid teeth in both jaws, present in moderate numbers — places it among the better algae-scrapers of the mid-sized loricariid genera, capable of removing biofilm and epilithic algae from rock surfaces but not specialized for deep wood-rasping in the manner of Panaque or Panaqolus. Gut content analyses of Peckoltia species in general show algae, detritus, plant material, and invertebrate prey, reflecting flexible opportunism rather than dietary specialisation.

In the aquarium, P. furcata accepts a wide range of foods. Sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato) form a suitable plant-matter base. Protein supplementation with frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets improves condition, supports breeding, and more closely mirrors the likely wild diet. Driftwood in the aquarium is appreciated and may be grazed for biofilm, but is not a dietary necessity. PlanetCatfish notes that P. furcata is compatible with a very wide range of tankmates, partly because its unfussy omnivory means it competes readily at feeding time rather than being outcompeted for specific foods.

Mating

Courtship has not been described in detail for P. furcata in the primary literature, but the broad Peckoltia pattern is consistent with cave-spawning ancistrine loricariids generally. Males become territorial around favoured rock crevices or cave structures as they approach breeding condition; odontodes on the pectoral spine and dorsal body surface become pronounced and may be used in lateral contact-fights with rival males competing for prime sites.

A conditioned female, identifiable by her wider body profile behind the pectoral girdle and swollen papilla, approaches the male's territory. In most Peckoltia species the male initially repels the female from the cave entrance but gradually tolerates her presence; the transition to spawning is typically triggered by conditioning — high-quality protein feeding, clean water, and, in some accounts, a mild temperature drop of 34–36 °F mimicking seasonal cues. PlanetCatfish lists no confirmed breeding reports for P. furcata specifically, which reflects its scarcity in the hobby rather than any intrinsic difficulty in inducing reproduction.

Breeding

Peckoltia furcata is a cave spawner in the standard ancistrine mode. Eggs are deposited on the ceiling or inner wall of a rock crevice or artificial cave; the male fertilises them and then remains as the sole guardian, fanning the clutch with his pectoral fins and cleaning eggs with his mouth throughout incubation. No breeding report has been submitted to PlanetCatfish for this species as of mid-2026, making it one of the few Peckoltia without a documented captive reproduction. This is almost certainly an artifact of the fish's low availability in the hobby — the reproductive biology should not differ substantially from congeners such as P. vittata or P. brevis.

Based on closely related, similarly sized Peckoltia species, clutch sizes in the range of 20–60 eggs are plausible, incubation at 79–82 °F taking 5–8 days, with the male guarding through egg absorption and early fry emergence. Fry are miniature versions of the adults and begin feeding on biofilm and fine particulate matter within days. For breeders attempting this species, a diet rich in frozen bloodworm and meaty foods for conditioning, paired with dedicated cave structures and clean, well-oxygenated water, represents the proven approach for Peckoltia cave-spawning.

In the aquarium

At around 3.5 in SL, Peckoltia furcata is a straightforward community-sized pleco — large enough to hold its own among active tankmates, compact enough for aquaria from 30 US gal upward. PlanetCatfish notes it as suitable with 'a very wide array of tankmates', including small fish, shrimp, and all but the largest or most aggressive cichlids — a genuine generalist that does not demand a species setup, unlike many of the more specialist loricariids.

Water parameters reflecting the upper Amazon origin are appropriate: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (up to ~180 mg/L CaCO3). The fish is not a blackwater specialist, and standard tap-water conditioned with dechlorinator will suit it in most regions. Filtration should be robust — medium-to-large loricariids produce considerable waste — and water changes of 25–30% weekly are advisable.

The aquascape should provide rocky hiding spots and crevices: P. furcata is a secretive species that spends much of the daylight period concealed in a favourite cave or crevice. Providing multiple structures reduces male–male competition in groups. Driftwood can be added for visual texture and will be grazed, but is not essential. Plants are largely safe — the fish shows no particular inclination to uproot or graze on them. It feeds readily at dusk and nocturnally, and feeding at lights-out reduces competition from faster diurnal tankmates. The forktail pattern, though understated compared with some hobbyist favourites, has a quiet elegance that rewards close observation.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia furcata as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting its broad distribution across the upper Amazon — the Ucayali and Marañón systems in Peru and Ecuador — and the absence of evidence for significant population decline. The upper Ucayali basin remains relatively intact compared with the most heavily deforested regions of Amazonia, though ongoing agricultural expansion, road building, and small-scale gold mining in the Peruvian Amazon present incremental threats to river-margin habitats.

Like most anonymously patterned, non-flagship loricariids, P. furcata attracts little conservation attention. The ornamental trade in the Ucayali basin does harvest plecos, including Peckoltia species, but P. furcata is not a highly sought commodity and commercial collection pressure appears moderate. No captive-breeding production exists at commercial scale. The IUCN assessment should be revisited as data from the region improve, but on present evidence the species does not warrant elevated concern.
