Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia simulata was described by Fisch-Muller and Covain in the paper 'Diversity of the Ancistrini (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Guianas: the Panaque group, a molecular appraisal with description of new species' (Fisch-Muller, Montoya-Burgos, Le Bail & Covain, 2012), published in Cybium, volume 36, number 1, pages 163–193. The holotype (MNHN 2011-0012, ex MHNG 2681.032) and two paratypes (MHNG 2681.058) were collected from Crique Moulou Koulou, a small tributary of the Oyapock River, at 3°06'05"N, 52°20'34"W, French Guiana.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) confirms Peckoltia simulata Fisch-Muller & Covain 2012 as valid, with subsequent recognition by Armbruster et al. (2015) and Armbruster & Lujan (2016). It is placed in subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini. The species epithet simulata is the Latin feminine past participle of simulare, meaning 'to simulate, resemble, or counterfeit' — chosen because the species closely resembles Peckoltia oligospila and the two were confused prior to the 2012 revision. The genus Peckoltia Miranda Ribeiro, 1912 honours Gustavo Peckolt (1861–1923), a Brazilian-born German botanist and pharmacist who worked with the Natural History Commission of Rondon.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of 3.5 in standard length (SL), making P. simulata a moderately small loricariid. The body form is the typical depressed, elongated loricariid shape, covered in bony scutes. The diagnostic colouration is a spotted pattern of rounded dark spots on a lighter background — spots present not only on the body flanks and dorsum but also on the head and extending onto the caudal peduncle. The ventral surface is pale.
The key morphological characters distinguishing P. simulata from its near-cryptic congener P. oligospila are: (1) teeth with both lobes similar in size and long (unless worn), with the lateral lobe only very slightly smaller than the medial lobe (vs. distinctly smaller in P. oligospila); (2) hypertrophied cheek odontodes longer, the longest passing the posterior end of the cleithrum (vs. not reaching it); (3) smaller body depth (19.8–20.4% SL vs. 21.1–23.4); (4) narrower body (29.5–30.7% SL vs. 30.9–32.8); (5) smaller orbital diameter (5.9–7.0% SL vs. 6.9–8.1). Meristics: 2 dorsal spines + 7 dorsal soft rays; 1 anal spine + 5 anal soft rays.
Species-specific genetic barcodes (GenBank accessions JF747001–JF747002) confirm the identity at molecular level. Sexual dimorphism follows the Peckoltia genus pattern: males develop odontodes on the pectoral fin leading edge and posterior body; females are broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Peckoltia simulata is known only from the Oyapock River basin of French Guiana, where it was collected in small forest creek tributaries on sandy and gravelled bottoms with rocks, submerged wood, and leaf litter. The type locality, Crique Moulou Koulou, is a small blackwater-influenced forest stream in the humid tropical lowlands near the Brazil–French Guiana border.
The water chemistry at the type locality is extremely soft and acidic: conductivity measured 13–14 µS/cm (exceptionally low), and pH 6.1–6.2, with temperature 77–79 °F. This is typical of Guiana Shield forest creeks draining ancient, nutrient-poor granitic and metamorphic substrates. Such blackwater or clear-water systems carry tannin-laden water, low mineral content, and moderate to dense shading from closed forest canopy.
Associated species collected at the same locality include Ancistrus cf. leucostictus, Ancistrus aff. temminckii, Guyanancistrus longispinis, Farlowella reticulata, Rineloricaria stewarti, and Otocinclus mariae — a guild of small, rheophilic loricariids characteristic of Guianan forest streams. The restricted known range — a single river system — defines this species as a narrow endemic and drives its threatened conservation status.
Feeding
The diet of P. simulata in nature has not been studied in detail, but habitat and morphology strongly imply a periphyton and biofilm feeding strategy consistent with the broader Peckoltia genus. The ventral sucking mouth, bicuspid teeth, and association with rocky and woody bottom substrates point to rasping of algae, diatoms, and microbial films from hard surfaces.
In the forest creek environment of French Guiana, light penetration through dense canopy limits attached algal growth; accordingly, the fish likely relies heavily on epilithic and wood-associated biofilm, leaf detritus and associated fungal biomass, and possibly small invertebrates dislodged during feeding. The extremely low conductivity (13–14 µS/cm) indicates a nutrient-poor environment where food resources are scarce but widely distributed over rocks and submerged material.
In the aquarium, the menu should match the natural soft-water, low-mineral environment: high-quality spirulina-based algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber), and supplementary small meaty items (frozen Daphnia, Artemia) to replicate opportunistic invertebrate feeding. Soft water and slightly acidic conditions likely aid digestive enzyme function in this species.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in P. simulata has not been observed or described. No aquarium breeding records exist on PlanetCatfish. The general Peckoltia reproductive mode is inferred from related species: males secure a spawning cavity (a rock crevice, hollow wood section, or clay tube) and court females through territorial display and exclusion of rival males.
In the soft, warm forest streams of French Guiana, breeding seasons likely correspond to seasonal water level and temperature fluctuations. The wet season (typically December–August in French Guiana) brings higher water, reduced conductivity, and increased food availability — conditions associated with reproductive activity in many Neotropical plecos. Males in breeding condition develop prominent odontodes on the leading edge of the pectoral fins, used in territorial sparring.
The narrow geographic range of the species means that population mixing over longer distances is limited, which may concentrate breeding in specific stream reaches with appropriate cavity substrates. Loss of woody debris through deforestation or flooding alteration would directly remove spawning sites.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Peckoltia simulata has been documented in the accessible aquarium literature or on PlanetCatfish. Given the species' Endangered conservation status, restricted distribution, and near-absence in the hobby, captive specimens are extremely rare.
Breeding mode for the genus Peckoltia is cave spawning with paternal care, consistent with tribe Ancistrini generally. The male selects a narrow cavity, guards and fans the adhesive egg clutch, and remains with fry until they disperse. Egg number and incubation period for this species are unknown.
If the species were ever acquired for captive maintenance, replicating the type locality chemistry would be essential: very soft, slightly acidic water (conductivity below 100 µS/cm, pH 6.0–6.5), temperature 77–79 °F, tannin-stained water (from dried leaves or alder cones), and dense structural enrichment including submerged wood and leaf litter. Sandy substrate mixed with fine gravel and rock pieces would match the documented habitat. Cave spawning tubes of appropriate small diameter should be provided.
In the aquarium
Peckoltia simulata is effectively absent from the hobby. Its Endangered IUCN status, extremely narrow distribution, and obscurity in the ornamental trade mean it is not commercially collected or imported. PlanetCatfish records no wild sightings by hobbyists and no breeding attempts.
From a care perspective, were the species ever obtained legally, its requirements would be demanding by standard aquarium pleco standards. The combination of very soft, tannin-stained water (pH 6.0–6.5, conductivity under 50 µS/cm), absence of mineral hardness, stable temperatures of 77–79 °F, and forest-creek aesthetic — leaf litter, driftwood tangles, mopani wood, fine-grained substrate — would need to be replicated carefully.
At 3.5 in SL maximum, a single specimen could be maintained in a 15–20 US gal dedicated setup. The gentle temperament toward tankmates reported for PlanetCatfish data ('safe with small fishes and shrimp') suggests compatibility with similarly sized, soft-water community species such as small tetras (Hemigrammus, Hyphessobrycon), pencilfish (Nannostomus), and small corydoras. The species is not suitable for standard hard-water community tanks.
Given the conservation status, any acquisition would need to follow responsible import protocols; ideally, focus should be on establishing captive breeding rather than repeated wild collection.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia simulata as Endangered (EN) in January 2021, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — meaning both the extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are small, the distribution is severely fragmented or restricted to a single location, and there is projected continuing decline in the quality of habitat. The known distribution is effectively a single river system, the Oyapock basin of French Guiana, which represents a restricted area of occupancy by any metric.
Threats to the species include deforestation in the Oyapock watershed (which increases sedimentation and turbidity in the forest creeks it inhabits, disrupting the clear, low-turbidity conditions it requires), agricultural expansion near the river system, and any future hydroelectric development. French Guiana's coastal lowlands face ongoing pressure from gold mining in interior regions, which can catastrophically degrade headwater streams through mercury and sediment discharge.
The extreme rarity of documented records — the species is known essentially from the type series and a handful of field observations — means that even minor habitat disturbance in a single creek could constitute a population-level event. The species would benefit from targeted field surveys to establish the full extent of its distribution in the Oyapock basin and to identify any additional populations, as well as improved monitoring of water quality in the type-locality stream.
