One of the oldest-described members of its genus and still one of the rarest in the trade, Pseudacanthicus serratus is a formidably armoured cactus pleco from the rocky deep-water channels of Suriname and French Guiana — a fish known to science from fewer specimens than most hobbyists can count on one hand, yet one that is occasionally collected from up to 10 metres depth in the Maroni River and exported in very small numbers.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudacanthicus serratus was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840 as Hypostomus serratus, in Cuvier and Valenciennes' 'Histoire naturelle des poissons' (volume 15, p. 503), from material collected in the region of Paramaribo, Suriname. The combination Pseudacanthicus serratus, placing it in the genus erected by Bleeker in 1862, is now the accepted valid name per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The basionym Hypostomus serratus Valenciennes, 1840 is thus a junior synonym under the valid combination.

The genus Pseudacanthicus, whose name derives from the Greek pseudês (false) + akantha (thorn or spine), was established to hold spiny cactus-like loricariids with a distinctive armament of longitudinal keel rows and hypertrophied odontodes — superficially similar to the genus Acanthicus but diagnosably different in the structure of the compound pterotic bones and the narrow premaxillae. Within subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004), Pseudacanthicus belongs to the Acanthicus clade, which is characterised by eight or more dorsal fin rays, seven to eight infraorbitals, five anal fin branched rays, and rows of pointed keeled odontodes along the flanks.

Because Valenciennes's original description predates the creation of L-numbers by over 150 years, P. serratus carries no L-number designation. It should not be confused with the many undescribed Pseudacanthicus spp. circulating under L-codes; those are different taxa from other rivers.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 12.5–13 in standard length (SL), with published maximum weight around 1.5 kg — a robust, heavy animal for its length. FishBase and complementary descriptions (Le Bail et al., 2000) indicate a maximum total length in the region of 14–15.5 in. The body is strongly armoured with multiple longitudinal rows of keeled scutes bearing sharp, posteriorly-directed odontodes — the feature responsible for the genus' German common name 'Cactus Pleco'. Running one's hand along the flanks of a Pseudacanthicus in the wrong direction is an instructive experience.

Ground colour in P. serratus is typically dark brown to brownish-black, with the keel rows and odontode tips sometimes appearing slightly paler or contrasting against the base colour. Pattern is generally plain or with very faint mottling; the species lacks the bold spots or ocelli of P. leopardus or the vivid red-orange of P. pirarara. The head is broad, with a wide oral disc equipped with elongate, curved, narrow-cusped teeth — a carnivore-biased dentition distinct from the wood-rasping spatulate teeth of Panaque.

The clade characters are well expressed: at least eight dorsal fin rays, five branched anal fin rays, and hypertrophied odontodes particularly developed along the snout margin and behind the operculum. Mature males develop additional interopercular odontodes ('cheek bristles') seasonally. Females are broader-bodied when gravid. The presence of two small plates in the posterior area of the compound pterotic — distinguishing Pseudacanthicus from Acanthicus — is a character visible in well-preserved specimens.

Habitat

The type locality is 'the region around Paramaribo, Suriname', a broad geographic assignment reflecting the collecting conventions of the 1840s. Contemporary field records are sparse, and FishBase summarises distribution as 'coastal drainages of the Guianas'. The most informative modern field documentation is a scientifically collected specimen from the Maroni River (Marowijne), French Guiana, collected at 10 metres depth during a scientific research programme by Hydreco Laboratoire, confirming deep benthic preference.

The Maroni River drains a Precambrian shield area of Guiana, producing soft, dark, slightly acidic black- to clearwater conditions over a laterite-rock substrate. At 10 metres in the Maroni's main channel, water is warm (77–82 °F), well oxygenated, soft, and slightly acidic. According to accounts gathered by Le Bail et al. (2000) from Boni fishermen in French Guiana, the species inhabits deep, rocky zones of the main riverbed — an environment characterised by exposed bedrock, boulders, and moderate to strong current. The fish is not commonly encountered even by local fishermen who know the rivers well, which is consistent with both its apparent rarity and its deep-channel microhabitat preference.

Feeding

Pseudacanthicus serratus is a carnivore — the narrow, elongate, curved teeth and the dietary reports from PlanetCatfish and field accounts place it clearly in the invertebrate-and-crustacean-feeding guild that characterises most Pseudacanthicus. The genus' teeth are unsuited for wood rasping or efficient algae scraping; they are adapted instead for gripping and crushing invertebrates: prawns, crustaceans, insect larvae, and similar animal prey.

This is an important distinction for aquarium management: unlike vegetarian or xylophagous plecos, P. serratus must be given substantial amounts of meaty food. Thawed prawns, mussel flesh (chopped), and high-quality carnivore pellets are the staple foods cited by experienced keepers and consistent with field biology. Some vegetable matter (blanched courgette, cucumber) can and should be offered to round out the diet, but this species will not thrive on algae wafers and driftwood alone.

In the wild, the deep rocky riverbed likely provides a diverse invertebrate fauna — aquatic insects, small crustaceans, molluscs, and worms — which P. serratus can locate using its sensitive odontodes and lateral line in low-visibility conditions. High-quality pellet foods that reduce waste while supplying adequate protein are particularly valued for this genus given the volume of nitrogenous waste produced by a meaty diet.

Mating

No captive breeding account for P. serratus has been documented. Field data on reproductive biology are entirely absent — the species is known from so few collected specimens that even basic information on seasonal condition, gonad development, and courtship behaviour cannot be drawn from the literature.

By comparison with the broader Pseudacanthicus genus and the Acanthicus clade, spawning is presumed to be cavity-based, with the male selecting a rock crevice or under-boulder recess and guarding the female during spawning. The pronounced male interopercular odontodes — larger and more elaborate in mature males — are likely used in both male-male territorial displays and courtship. Female body shape, broadening conspicuously when gravid, is the most reliable sex indicator in the aquarium.

The Maroni River system, like many Guiana shield drainages, experiences pronounced seasonal fluctuations in water level and chemistry; it is plausible that breeding is triggered by the onset of dry-season conditions (dropping water levels, slightly falling temperature, increasing clarity). None of this has been confirmed for P. serratus specifically.

Breeding

Pseudacanthicus serratus has not been bred in captivity to any published account. The combination of its rarity in the trade — only very small numbers are collected and exported, primarily from French Guiana and Suriname — and its demanding aquarium requirements means that few keepers have ever maintained more than one specimen, let alone a conditioned pair.

Conditions for any attempt would necessarily draw on experience with related Pseudacanthicus species. A large tank (130 US gal minimum for a pair), with multiple deep cave structures formed from stacked rocks or large ceramic tubes, well-oxygenated soft acidic water at 77–82 °F, and regular generous feedings of meaty foods would represent baseline requirements. Whether P. serratus requires specific dry-season cues or particular cave geometry is unknown.

Given how infrequently the species is imported and how little is known of its biology, a captive breeding achievement would represent a significant contribution to both the hobby record and the long-term security of the taxon.

In the aquarium

Pseudacanthicus serratus is a species for dedicated large-pleco specialists. Adults reaching 12.5–13 in SL and 1.5 kg are formidable animals requiring a tank of at least 105–130 US gal for a single specimen, with robust filtration capable of handling a meaty diet. Water quality parameters should replicate Guiana shield conditions: temperature 77–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft water (below 10 dH), and strong oxygenation through surface agitation or powerhead circulation.

Aquarium decor should feature extensive rockwork providing multiple cave choices at different locations — this reduces aggression and stress by giving the fish options rather than forcing competition over a single refuge. Heavy sand or fine gravel substrate is appropriate. Driftwood is acceptable as décor but is not required for feeding. Bright lighting is tolerated; Pseudacanthicus species are known to 'sun themselves' on top of rockwork in comfortable, well-maintained aquaria.

The species is not particularly aggressive toward unrelated fish and can be kept with large, robust tankmates — larger cichlids, arowanas, or other big fish are common companions. However, P. serratus can be outcompeted at feeding time by faster, more active fish, and should be fed after lights-out when possible. Two Pseudacanthicus in a modest tank will fight; if multiple specimens are attempted, the tank must be very large with wholly separate territories.

Rarity and difficulty of acquisition mean P. serratus is an aspirational species for most hobbyists — a fish appearing occasionally on specialist import lists from Suriname or French Guiana at significant price, and not something to acquire without a fully prepared large system.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudacanthicus serratus as Least Concern in January 2021. The assessment acknowledges a distribution across the coastal drainages of Suriname and French Guiana (and potentially Guyana) and the absence of documented major population decline.

However, the rarity of field records and the species' specialised deep rocky-channel habitat mean that very little is known about its actual population size or trend. FishBase notes it is 'known to scientists from only a few specimens' — a statement that reflects the difficulty of collecting in deep main-channel benthic habitats rather than necessarily indicating scarcity in absolute terms, but it does mean that any population monitoring is essentially impossible with current data.

The Guiana shield drainages are generally considered among the least-impacted large river systems in South America — deforestation rates are lower, hydroelectric development is modest compared to the Amazon, and indigenous land management maintains large buffer areas. These factors underpin the Least Concern assessment. Export pressure from ornamental collection is very low given the scarcity of the species in the trade; it is not a volume-commodity fish and collection appears to be incidental rather than targeted.
