Hidden in the fast headwaters of the Kukenán River on Venezuela's ancient tepui highlands, this small pleco has barely been studied since Steindachner named it in 1915 — no redescription has followed in over a century, the fish carries no L-number, and it remains one of the more obscure members of a genus whose species are already poorly known in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudancistrus coquenani was originally described by Steindachner in 1915, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats it as a valid species under the combination Pseudancistrus coquenani (Steindachner, 1915) — the parentheses around the authority indicate that the species was first described in a different genus and later transferred to Pseudancistrus. FishBase records it in the family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypostominae.

A significant taxonomic note flagged by FishBase is that no formal redescription has ever been published for this species. The original 1915 description remains the sole detailed account of the species; over the following century the fish has not been subject to morphological or phylogenetic revision. This means that the characters used to diagnose it from congeners, and its precise position within Pseudancistrus, are not established in the modern sense.

The genus Pseudancistrus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within Hypostominae. It is a moderately large Neotropical genus distributed across northern and central South America, with many members associated with Guiana Shield drainages and tepui highlands — environments that generate high fish endemism due to their geographic isolation. Pseudancistrus coquenani is a habitat-specialist in this mould, confined to a single small river system draining one of Venezuela's iconic tepuis.

The species has no assigned L-number or aquarium trade code, reflecting its absence from the ornamental fish market. The common name 'Kukenan Pseudancistrus' used here is descriptive and not established in the literature.

Morphology

Pseudancistrus coquenani reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL — a small pleco by family standards, comparable to the smaller members of the Ancistrini. The body is armoured with the bony plate covering typical of loricariids, with the head, flanks, and dorsum protected by interlocking scutes.

Beyond the size record drawn from Fisch-Muller (2003) and the original description, detailed morphological data for this species are not available in the published literature. No modern redescription exists, so the counts of fin rays, lateral plate rows, and diagnostic character states that distinguish it from close relatives cannot be cited from current taxonomic sources. FishBase notes the species is a facultative air-breather — a trait documented in some loricariids that inhabit shallow, seasonally reduced, or fast-oxygenated torrential waters — though the mechanism and frequency of this behaviour in P. coquenani are not described.

Members of Pseudancistrus are generally slender, moderately depressed loricariids with interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) developed in adult males; females of most species are noticeably broader across the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Pseudancistrus coquenani is known from the Kukenan River basin within the upper Caroní River drainage in Venezuela. The Kukenán (also spelled Cuquenam or Kukenan) River drains the slopes of the Kukenán Tepui and nearby tepuis of the Gran Sabana region in Bolívar State, Venezuela, eventually contributing to the Caroní River, which itself flows north to join the Orinoco.

The Gran Sabana is a high-altitude savanna plateau on the Guiana Shield, characterized by ancient sandstone tabletop mountains (tepuis) rising steeply from the surrounding landscape. The rivers draining the tepui slopes are typically fast-flowing, blackwater to clear-water systems with very soft, acidic to near-neutral water, low conductivity, and high dissolved oxygen in the rapids. Substrates are dominated by exposed bedrock, boulders, and coarse gravel scoured by seasonal rain events.

The region falls largely within Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tepui highlands are among the most geologically ancient and geobiologically distinctive landscapes on earth, and the isolation of individual tepui drainage systems has produced high rates of endemism in both flora and fauna. Pseudancistrus coquenani appears restricted to this drainage, making it a narrow endemic even within Venezuela.

Water temperatures at tepui elevations in the Gran Sabana are cooler than lowland Venezuela, with the Kukenán drainage likely averaging 68–75 °F rather than the higher values typical of Orinoco lowland tributaries.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to Pseudancistrus coquenani has been published. Members of the genus Pseudancistrus are typically understood to be algivores and biofilm grazers: like most Ancistrini, they use the ventral sucking disc to rasp periphyton from hard substrates — the algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and fine organic particles that coat rocks and boulders in fast-flowing, well-lit rivers.

In the fast, rocky Kukenán River environment, the fish would forage across exposed bedrock and boulder surfaces where current keeps fine sediment from settling and periphyton growth is maintained by good light and oxygenation. The interopercular odontodes characteristic of Pseudancistrus suggest some degree of competition over feeding territories, as is common in rock-grazing loricariids that defend patches of biofilm-covered substrate.

Facultative air-breathing, noted for this species on FishBase, may be an adaptation to periods of reduced stream flow or temporarily elevated CO₂ in isolated pools during drought — conditions that can occur in the Gran Sabana's marked wet-dry seasonal cycle.

In captivity, a diet dominated by high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables would be appropriate for any Pseudancistrus, supplemented by natural periphyton growth on rocks and driftwood in the tank.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Pseudancistrus coquenani is entirely undocumented. The species is not available to aquarists and no fieldwork addressing its reproductive biology has been published.

At the genus level, Pseudancistrus are assumed to follow the loricariid pattern of territorial males defending cavity sites — crevices between boulders or undercuts in bedrock — during the breeding season. The interopercular odontodes of males, which are typically more developed than in females, play a role in male-male competition and possibly in mate assessment. In torrent-adapted species, spawning cavities would be sheltered from direct current while still benefiting from the well-oxygenated water flow that supports egg development.

The Gran Sabana's pronounced wet season (approximately May–September) and dry season would likely modulate breeding, with rising waters, falling temperatures, and shifts in water chemistry potentially serving as reproductive cues — a pattern documented in other tepui-region loricariids.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Pseudancistrus coquenani in captivity or in the field. The species' complete absence from the ornamental trade and the remoteness of its type locality mean it has not been available for aquarist experimentation.

By analogy with other Pseudancistrus and Ancistrini more broadly, the species is expected to be a cave spawner with paternal brood care. A male would guard a tight rock cavity through egg incubation, fanning the clutch to maintain oxygen supply and removing non-viable eggs. Fry would be guarded until independent.

Given the relatively small adult size (3 in SL), clutch size would presumably be modest — tens rather than hundreds of eggs, consistent with small-bodied Ancistrini. Incubation duration at the cooler temperatures of the Kukenán would likely be somewhat longer than for lowland congeners.

Any future breeding attempt would need to replicate the soft, cool, highly oxygenated torrent conditions of the Gran Sabana — a demanding set of requirements for most aquarium setups.

In the aquarium

Pseudancistrus coquenani is not available in the aquarium hobby. No collection permits for export from the Gran Sabana / Canaima National Park region are current, and the species has no L-number or trade history. It is included here as a documented species in the Caroní drainage and a notable example of tepui ichthyoendemism.

Should specimens ever legitimately enter the hobby — through scientific collection or future permitting — their care requirements would differ significantly from typical trade plecos. The Kukenán's cool, soft, acidic, highly oxygenated water would need to be replicated: temperature likely 68–75 °F, pH 5.5–6.8, very low hardness (conductivity below 100 µS/cm), and vigorous surface agitation to ensure high dissolved oxygen. Standard tropical aquarium water is probably unsuitable.

A tank modelled on a tepui stream — smooth boulders, exposed bedrock surfaces, strong flow from a powerhead or sump return, no fine substrate, and minimal nutrient load — would be the appropriate setup. At 3 in, the fish is small enough that a 25–40 US gal aquarium with the correct flow characteristics would suffice.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus coquenani as Least Concern in May 2017, citing its occurrence in the Kukenan River basin in the upper Caroní drainage, Venezuela. The assessment noted that a significant portion of the species' habitat falls within Canaima National Park, one of Venezuela's largest and most strictly protected conservation areas.

Canaima National Park covers over 30,0 mi² of the Gran Sabana and adjoining tepui highlands and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural values. The protected status of the park provides meaningful insulation against habitat destruction from logging, mining, and large-scale agriculture, which are the primary threats to lowland Venezuelan fish habitats.

Despite the LC rating, the species' narrow distribution — apparently confined to one small river system in one of South America's most geographically isolated landscapes — means it has limited resilience to any localised event affecting water quality or flow in the Kukenán. The Gran Sabana faces low-level pressures from tourism, artisanal mining on its margins, and the long-term effects of climate change on tepui hydrology, particularly altered precipitation patterns affecting stream flow.

The absence of a modern redescription means the true distributional limits and population status of this species cannot be assessed with confidence; survey work in the Kukenán and adjacent tepui drainages would clarify whether the fish occurs more widely than currently documented.
