Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus depressus was described by Albert Günther in 1868 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 4, volume 1, number 6, article 56, page 476) under the original combination Chaetostomus depressus. The type locality is given as 'probably Suriname', a qualification that reflects uncertainty in the original collection data. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Pseudancistrus depressus (Günther, 1868), placed by Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1889: 45) in the genus Pseudancistrus; Regan (1904: 240) provided a complementary description. The parenthetical authority reflects the genus change from the original Chaetostomus.
Pseudancistrus Bleeker, 1862 is the only genus within the tribe Ancistrini (formerly subfamily Ancistrinae, now treated within Hypostominae sensu Armbruster 2004) that completely lacks evertible cheek plates — the mobile, odontode-bearing plate arrays that most ancistrine genera deploy for defence and display. This unique absence has led to its intermittent placement in Hypostominae rather than Ancistrini in older literature; the genus has since been confirmed as a derived member of Ancistrini on morphological and molecular grounds.
Distribution is centred on rivers of central Suriname — the Suriname and Coppename river drainages — on the eastern Guiana Shield (CoF; FishBase). These are clear-water, fast-flowing Shield rivers overlying ancient Precambrian bedrock, quite different in character from the whitewater Andean rivers draining into the Orinoco or Amazon proper. A ZooKeys review of the 'Pseudancistrus barbatus group' (Provenzano et al.) documents the broader distribution of the genus across Orinoco, Amazon, and Guiana Shield rivers, placing P. depressus within the Suriname drainage.
Morphology
Adults reach 5 in total length (FishBase) or 5 in SL (PlanetCatfish), making P. depressus a moderately sized pleco. The body is broadly depressed and heavily armoured with overlapping keeled scutes; 'depressus' (Latin: flattened) refers directly to this strongly flattened body profile — a characteristic that allows the fish to hug rock faces and the undersides of boulders in fast current.
The head is broad and flat, occupying a significant fraction of the body length, with a wide, ventrally placed suckermouth. Unlike most ancistrine genera, P. depressus bears no evertible cheek plates; the interopercular region lacks the fanning arrays of odontodes deployed by Ancistrus and related genera when threatened. Instead, the defensive arsenal consists of the normal fixed scute armour and the stout, curved pectoral spines.
Ground colour is dark grey to brownish, typically with an irregular pattern of lighter or darker mottling that varies between individuals and populations. The underside is pale to cream. The dorsal fin has a prominent first spine and 7 branched rays. Eyes are set high and laterally, typical of the family.
Sexual dimorphism has not been precisely characterised for this species. In related Pseudancistrus species, males develop more pronounced odontodes along the snout and pectoral spines, and females are somewhat broader-bodied when gravid. These characters are likely present in P. depressus but not formally documented for this taxon specifically.
Habitat
The Catalog of Fishes records the distribution of Pseudancistrus depressus as 'rivers of central Suriname: Suriname and Coppename river systems.' Both of these rivers drain the interior of Suriname, flowing northward from the Guiana Shield plateau to the Atlantic coastal lowlands. The Coppename River in particular drains a large area of undisturbed tropical rainforest in central Suriname, including the Central Suriname Nature Reserve — one of the largest intact tropical forest reserves in the world.
Guiana Shield rivers like the Coppename are characterised by clear to tea-coloured water, soft and mildly acidic chemistry (pH typically 5.5–7.0), very low conductivity, and high dissolved oxygen from turbulent flow over rock. Substrate in fast-flowing sections is bedrock, boulder, and cobble; slower sections accumulate sand and leaf litter. Water temperatures are tropical, typically 73–81 °F, with limited seasonal fluctuation in these equatorial latitudes.
The species is likely confined to faster-flowing rock-substrate sections, consistent with the rheophilic tendencies of the genus. Pseudancistrus species are generally found in moderate to strong current over hard substrate — not the silty, organic-rich margins preferred by Hypostomus or the wood-pile microhabitats of Panaqolus.
Note: PlanetCatfish's entry lists the distribution as 'Orinoco, Upper Orinoco', which appears to be a database error inconsistent with Günther's original description, the CoF entry, and the IUCN assessment (all of which place the species in Suriname). The CoF and IUCN are followed here.
Feeding
Pseudancistrus depressus is, like other members of its genus and tribe, a benthic grazer of algae and biofilm. The ventral suckermouth and fine, bicuspid teeth are adapted for scraping the aufwuchs community — microalgae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated organic matter — from rock and hard substrate surfaces. The genera Pseudancistrus and Ancistrus share this basic feeding ecology, the key distinguishing feature being the absence of the defensive cheek-plate mechanism in Pseudancistrus.
In the aquarium, P. depressus accepts algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber) alongside any natural algae growth in the tank. Sinking pellets are also taken. The species will graze on soft algae from tank glass, smooth rocks, and wood surfaces, and benefits from surfaces with some established biofilm growth.
Dietary balance is important: a diet too heavily weighted towards high-protein animal foods can cause digestive stress in this primarily herbivorous grazer. Live or frozen bloodworm can be offered occasionally as a supplement, but the core diet should be plant-based. The species is likely naturally active at crepuscular and nocturnal hours, foraging over exposed rock surfaces after dark.
Mating
Breeding behaviour has not been formally documented or reported in aquaria for Pseudancistrus depressus; PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports for this species. General reproductive biology can be inferred from congeners and the broader Ancistrini framework.
Males in Pseudancistrus and related genera are likely territorial, defending preferred cave or crevice sites against rival males. The absence of evertible cheek plates removes one display mechanism used by Ancistrus during male–male competition and courtship, but the odontodes on the snout and pectoral spine edges still serve as tactile displays and weapons in direct encounters.
In the aquarium, providing multiple cave sites and visual barriers between territories is advisable when keeping more than one male. Females are likely attracted to occupied nest sites, and conditioning on a varied diet before any breeding attempt improves reproductive readiness. The soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water of the Guiana Shield environment — low conductivity, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 75–79 °F — should be replicated to encourage natural behaviour.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Pseudancistrus depressus has been documented in the published hobbyist literature as of 2026. The species is uncommon in the trade and virtually absent from captive collections outside specialist Guiana Shield fish enthusiasts.
Based on the general biology of the tribe Ancistrini, P. depressus is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care: the male selects a cavity — a crevice in rock, a hollow log, or a ceramic breeding tube in captivity — and guards an adhesive egg clutch through incubation, fanning to maintain oxygenation. The closely related Pseudancistrus barbatus and P. megacephalus follow this pattern, and both have occasional hobbyist records.
Any attempt to breed P. depressus should focus on water quality and chemistry: clean, well-oxygenated, soft and slightly acidic water matching the Guiana Shield origin. Rock caves are more appropriate spawning structures than the driftwood tubes preferred by wood-associated species. Fry, if obtained, should be raised on finely ground spirulina and algae wafer dust in a clean, well-filtered tank with gentle but consistent water movement.
The rarity of this species in captivity and the absence of breeding records make it a genuine challenge for specialists.
In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus depressus is a rare species in the hobby, encountered only occasionally in specialist imports of Surinamese loricariids. It lacks an L-number designation, which limits its profile among ornamental fish collectors, and its conservative colouration does not command the premium of more strikingly patterned ancistrine imports from the Xingu or Orinoco.
Its care requirements follow the Guiana Shield template: clean, soft, mildly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0), good oxygenation, temperature 73–79 °F, and minimal dissolved organics. A tank of 20–30 US gal is appropriate for a single adult or a pair. Filtration should provide good turnover — ideally 4–6 times the tank volume per hour — without creating excessive mid-water turbulence if tankmates are sensitive to flow.
Furnishing with smooth river cobbles, angular rocks creating caves, and some bogwood is recommended. Fine gravel or coarse sand substrate suits the benthic lifestyle. Leaf litter (catappa, oak) buffers acidity and creates natural refugia. Plants compatible with soft, slightly acidic water (Echinodorus, Microsorum) can be included.
P. depressus is peaceful toward non-competing species and suitable with small to mid-sized tetras, hatchetfishes, pencilfish, and Corydoras typical of Surinamese assemblages. Avoid keeping with multiple males in small tanks. Because the species lacks the evertible cheek-plate defence of most ancistrine relatives, it may be more vulnerable to harassment from larger or aggressive tankmates and should not be combined with species likely to target it.
Due to its rarity, wild-caught specimens are likely the only source; captive-bred fish are not currently available commercially.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus depressus as Least Concern in 2020, citing its occurrence in central Suriname river systems and no evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment. The rivers within its range — particularly the Coppename River catchment — are predominantly intact; the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) encompasses a major part of the Coppename drainage and provides strong de facto protection for the habitat.
Suriname's interior forests have seen less deforestation pressure than comparable regions of Brazil or Peru, and the Shield rivers within its range retain good water quality. The primary long-term threats are small-scale gold mining (artisanal and semi-industrial), which causes mercury contamination and sedimentation in some Shield tributaries, and any future infrastructure development (roads, hydropower) in the interior.
The species is not a target of significant ornamental trade collection. No captive breeding capability exists. The IUCN assessment reflects genuine security of its habitat rather than absence of data; however, Guiana Shield endemics can have restricted ranges, and hydrological or land-use changes within the Suriname and Coppename basins could reduce population viability with little warning. Ongoing monitoring of artisanal mining impacts on Shield river water quality is the most relevant conservation need for this and related species.
