Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus guentheri was originally described as Ancistrus guentheri by Charles Tate Regan in 1904, in his monograph of the family Loricariidae published in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, number 3, page 241, plate 12 figure 3). It was transferred to the genus Pseudancistrus by Carl Eigenmann in 1910 in his Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of tropical and south temperate America (Reports of the Princeton University Expeditions to Patagonia, volume 3, number 4, pages 375–511). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pseudancistrus guentheri (Regan, 1904), with Ancistrus guentheri Regan, 1904 as its sole synonym.
Pseudancistrus belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. The genus occupies a distinctive position within Ancistrini: it is the only genus in the tribe in which evertible cheek plates (interopercular odontodes) are absent or strongly reduced — a character that both defines the genus and complicates its phylogenetic placement. Armbruster and colleagues reviewed Pseudancistrus phylogenetics in 2015, finding it to be a Guiana Shield lineage broadly, though species-level relationships within the genus remain incompletely resolved.
The type locality is recorded simply as Guyana. Material was collected from the Essequibo and Demerara river basins.
Morphology
Pseudancistrus guentheri reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in SL (Burgess, 1989, as cited in FishBase). This makes it a mid-sized loricariid — notably larger than the dwarf Ancistrus species of the hobby but considerably smaller than many Hypostomus or Pterygoplichthys representatives.
The body follows the standard loricariid armour plan, with overlapping keeled plates covering the flanks and dorsal surface, and softer, partially plated or naked abdomen. As the type genus for its lineage, Pseudancistrus is characterised by the absence or strong reduction of evertible interopercular odontodes — the cheek bristles that are a prominent feature of many other Ancistrini males. This distinguishes it immediately from Ancistrus and most of its Ancistrini relatives.
Beyond the characters established in the original description — plate counts, fin-ray meristics, and proportions from preserved type specimens — detailed live morphology information is not available in the accessible literature, reflecting the species' rarity in collections and complete absence from the aquarium trade.
Habitat
Pseudancistrus guentheri is recorded from the Essequibo and Demerara river basins in Guyana. Both are major coastal river systems of the Guiana Shield — Precambrian basement rivers flowing north or north-eastward through tropical lowland forest to the Atlantic coast. The Essequibo is one of the largest river systems in South America by drainage area; the Demerara is smaller but shares the same general geological and ecological context.
Guiana Shield rivers draining Precambrian basement are typically blackwater or clearwater systems: acidic, low in dissolved minerals, and often tea-coloured with dissolved organic matter (tannins and humic acids). Rocky rapids and cascades are characteristic features, and Ancistrini in this region are frequently associated with boulder and cobble substrates in moderate to fast-flowing water. No specific habitat data (temperature, pH, substrate type, depth) have been published for Pseudancistrus guentheri itself.
Feeding
No feeding ecology study has been published for Pseudancistrus guentheri. Inference from the broader Ancistrini literature indicates that species in this tribe are predominantly algivores and biofilm grazers, rasping periphyton, epilithic algae, and associated organic matter from rock surfaces using their multicusped teeth. The rocky, current-exposed habitat typical of Guiana Shield Ancistrini supports dense epilithic algae and diatom communities — the resource base on which these fishes likely depend.
Some Pseudancistrus species have been noted to consume fine detrital organic matter in addition to algae, and the hard substrate preference common to the genus suggests scraping and rasping feeding modes dominate over suction-based particulate feeding.
Mating
No courtship observations have been published for Pseudancistrus guentheri. The species has not been maintained in the aquarium hobby and no field observations of reproductive behaviour have been recorded. The absence of evertible cheek plates in Pseudancistrus — a character used in display and competition by many other Ancistrini — may affect the nature of male territorial behaviour, though the functional consequences of this absence for mating system organisation have not been studied in detail.
Breeding
No breeding records exist for Pseudancistrus guentheri in captivity or in the wild. Based on the general biology of Ancistrini, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the expected reproductive strategy: a male selects and defends a crevice or rock cavity, females deposit adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male fans and guards the brood through incubation and early larval development.
No clutch size estimates, incubation period data, or fry development observations have been published for this species.
In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus guentheri is not present in the aquarium trade and has no registered keepers on PlanetCatfish. No L-number or common name has been assigned. The species is known almost entirely from museum specimens.
The Guiana Shield water chemistry context — soft, acidic, low-conductivity, well-oxygenated water in rocky current — would guide aquarium conditions if the species were ever maintained, though no husbandry experience exists to draw upon. At 4.5 in maximum SL it would fall into a mid-sized pleco category suitable for tanks of 55 US gal and above, if its ecology and behaviour followed the general Ancistrini pattern.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus guentheri as Data Deficient in 2020 (assessed by Ballen, G.A.; published 2023). The Data Deficient designation reflects not a determination that the species is secure, but rather that insufficient information on its population status, population size, and distribution exists to make a threat assessment. No systematic surveys for this species have been conducted, and no specific threats have been identified or formally ruled out.
The Essequibo and Demerara river basins in Guyana remain comparatively less degraded than many South American river systems — Guyana's interior forests retain high cover — but gold mining activity in parts of the Essequibo watershed is an ongoing source of mercury contamination, sedimentation, and habitat disturbance that could affect rocky-stream loricariids. Until surveys establish population status and range, the conservation situation remains genuinely unknown.
