Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus corantijniensis was described by De Chambrier and Montoya-Burgos in 2008 in Zootaxa (number 1918, pages 45–58), as part of a combined morphological and molecular revision of the Pseudancistrus barbatus species group. The species name refers explicitly to the Corantijn River (also spelled Corantijn or Corentyne), the drainage to which the species appears to be restricted. No synonyms are known, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Pseudancistrus corantijniensis De Chambrier & Montoya-Burgos, 2008.
No L-number has been assigned. The genus Pseudancistrus carries a notable anatomical distinction within Ancistrini: it is the only genus in that tribe lacking evertible cheek plates — the movable cheek-spine fans used by most bristlenose relatives for defence. This absence is reflected in the generic name: pseudo- (Greek, 'false') + agkistron (Greek, 'hook'), indicating an imperfect or aberrant hook-bearer. This character was historically used to place Pseudancistrus in Hypostominae despite its otherwise Ancistrini-like body plan.
The 2008 paper by De Chambrier and Montoya-Burgos is the definitive reference, using both molecular markers and morphological characters to delineate the P. barbatus group species and characterise P. corantijniensis against its congeners, principally P. barbatus and P. depressus.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 7 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (reference 79572). A photograph on PlanetCatfish of a live specimen labelled at 8.5 in likely represents a total length (TL) measurement rather than SL, which is consistent with the documented standard length. The body is elongated and compressed (laterally flattened in cross-section), covered in heavily keeled loricariid scute armour.
The defining diagnostic feature of P. corantijniensis within its species group is the pattern of whitish spots: on the snout and anterior head these spots are very small and densely crowded, then shift abruptly at approximately the level of the eye to become conspicuously larger (0.5 in diameter or greater) on the posterior head and body, with a further gradual increase in spot size moving toward the tail. A single large whitish spot is present on each dorso-lateral plate posterior to the pelvic fins. This abrupt transition differentiates P. corantijniensis from P. barbatus and P. depressus, in which spot-size change is gradual across the body.
As with all Pseudancistrus, hypertrophied odontodes are present along the snout in both sexes, including in early ontogeny — a feature used in genus-level diagnosis. The genus is also noted to possess facultative air-breathing capacity. Dorsal-fin formula: 1 spine, 7 soft rays; anal fin: 1 spine, 4 soft rays.
Habitat
The known distribution of Pseudancistrus corantijniensis is the middle and lower Corantijn (Corantijn) River and its immediate drainage in Suriname, approximately 5°N–4°N, 57°W–58°W. The type locality is the Corantijn River at Kaw Falls (4°59'48.3"N, 57°37'49.5"W), Sipaliwini District, Suriname. PlanetCatfish assigns the species to the Guyana Waters / Coastal Rivers of the Guyanas / Suriname Coastal Rivers / Corantijn drainage complex.
The Corantijn is a large Guiana Shield river flowing north to the Atlantic. Its upper reaches drain ancient Precambrian basement rock with numerous rapids and waterfalls — typical habitat for rheophilic loricariids. Pseudancistrus species generally inhabit rocky substrates in moderate to fast current, using boulder interstices and crevices as shelter.
No water chemistry data specific to this species or the type locality are available in the published record. Guiana Shield coastal rivers typically carry soft, acidic to near-neutral water with low conductivity, especially in upstream reaches; conditions vary between wet and dry seasons. FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical, with medium resilience (population doubling time 1.4–4.4 years). The species was assessed as Least Concern in 2020, with the IUCN noting that it faces some ongoing pressure from gold-mining activity in the Corantijn basin.
Feeding

Breeding
Pseudancistrus corantijniensis is inferred to be a cave spawner based on loricariid and Ancistrini reproductive biology generally, but no confirmed breeding data are available. No aquarium breeding records exist in the published or accessible hobbyist literature.
For aquarists attempting to work with this species, the general loricariid cave-spawning protocol applies: provide substantial caves or crevices (this is a large fish reaching nearly 7 in SL, so cave dimensions must accommodate it), maintain excellent water quality and oxygenation, and condition prospective pairs on a varied diet. The Guiana Shield origin suggests soft, slightly acidic water parameters may be relevant for conditioning, though this is extrapolation rather than documented observation.
In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus corantijniensis is a large loricariid — approaching 7 in SL — and requires a correspondingly spacious aquarium. A minimum of 55 US gal is appropriate for a single adult; a pair or group demands substantially more, with ample territorial division provided by rock arrangements and multiple caves. The species' natural habitat in Guiana Shield rapids calls for high water flow, strong oxygenation, and efficient mechanical and biological filtration.
Substrate should be coarse sand or fine gravel over a base of flat rocks and boulders. Caves of appropriate diameter (large ceramic caves, PVC pipe sections, or stacked slate) are essential for behavioural wellbeing. Driftwood can be added as additional cover.
No husbandry data have been published for this species specifically, and no keeper records exist in the accessible hobbyist database as of the cache date, meaning all care recommendations are extrapolated from related Pseudancistrus and broader Hypostominae biology. The species' restricted known range and absence from hobbyist trade records suggest it is rarely, if ever, encountered in the aquarium market.
Water parameters should target soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2 extrapolated from Guiana Shield conditions), warm (75–82 °F), with near-zero ammonia and nitrite and low nitrates maintained by regular water changes.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus corantijniensis as Least Concern in October 2020. The assessment acknowledges the species' apparently restricted range within the Corantijn River drainage of Suriname while noting that, at the time of assessment, the population had not declined to a level warranting a threatened category.
The Corantijn basin faces ongoing anthropogenic pressure, notably from artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), which introduces mercury and suspended sediment into waterways and can degrade rocky-substrate habitat through sedimentation and chemical contamination. Suriname's interior gold-mining areas are some of the most heavily impacted freshwater systems in the Guiana Shield. Whether populations of P. corantijniensis at and downstream of Kaw Falls are directly affected by mining activities within the upper Corantijn has not been formally assessed.
The species' apparent confinement to a single river system makes it inherently more vulnerable to localised habitat degradation than species with broad pan-Amazonian distributions. Continued monitoring of Corantijn water quality and fish community composition would be of conservation value.
