Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus reus was formally described by Armbruster and Taphorn in 2008 in Zootaxa (volume 1731, pages 33–41), based on specimens collected from the Río Caroní drainage in Estado Bolívar, Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pseudancistrus reus as a valid species under this authorship, with no synonyms on record.
The genus Pseudancistrus is placed in the subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini, within the family Loricariidae. Uniquely among the Ancistrini, Pseudancistrus lacks evertible cheek plates — the interopercular odontodes are present but the underlying plate does not rotate outward as it does in Ancistrus and most other ancistrinine genera. This character has historically caused taxonomic uncertainty about the genus's tribal placement.
The specific epithet reus is Latin for 'accused' or 'defendant', a name whose precise allusion is not elaborated in the original description. The genus name Pseudancistrus derives from the Ancient Greek pseudes (false) and agkistron (hook), expressing a resemblance to Ancistrus that the authors considered superficial.
Morphology
Pseudancistrus reus is a small species, with a reported maximum length of 3 in standard length (SL). The body follows the typical loricariid plan: flattened ventrally, covered in articulating bony scutes, with the ventral mouth adapted for clinging to and grazing hard substrates.
The most diagnostic feature distinguishing P. reus from its congeners is a combination of characters: a barred body pattern (transverse dark bars on a lighter ground, rather than spots or mottling), and a conspicuously short mid-dorsal plate row comprising approximately 18 plates — substantially fewer than the 21–25 plates typical of most Pseudancistrus. In the original description, Armbruster and Taphorn specifically contrast this incomplete row with the more complete rows that characterise related species.
No detailed morphometric data are available in the sources examined beyond the maximum size figure. Genus-level characters include the absence of evertible interopercular plates and the presence of odontodes on the snout and body typical of Ancistrini.
Habitat
Pseudancistrus reus is known from the Río Caroní, a major right-bank tributary of the lower Orinoco in Estado Bolívar, Venezuela. The type locality is precise: a small side channel very close to the confluence of the Río Claro with the Caroní, at approximately 7°54'30"N, 63°02'50"W.
Water conditions recorded at the type locality during collection were notably soft and mildly acidic: temperature 82 °F, pH 6.6, and conductivity approximately 12 µS/cm. Visibility was reported at roughly 7 ft. These parameters, combined with the low conductivity, suggest a blackwater-influenced or mixed clearwater habitat — the Caroní drains the Guiana Highlands and carries tannin-stained, mineral-poor water in many of its tributary channels.
Current strength in the collection microhabitat was moderate. The fish's loricariid body plan — ventrally flattened, with strong pectoral spines and adhesive oral disc — is well suited to clinging to rock faces or coarse substrate in flowing water.
Feeding
No dietary observations specific to Pseudancistrus reus are on record. Based on the genus-level biology of Pseudancistrus, the species is expected to be primarily an epilithic grazer — using its specialised dentition to rasp diatoms, algae, fine detritus, and microbial biofilm from rock and hard substrate surfaces in flowing water.
In the aquarium, analogous small Pseudancistrus respond well to algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and fresh or blanched vegetable matter (courgette, cucumber, spinach). Smooth rock surfaces that accumulate natural algal growth are beneficial. Occasional protein supplementation with small invertebrates is likely consistent with opportunistic wild feeding behaviour.
Mating
No mating observations for Pseudancistrus reus are on record. The species is not established in the ornamental trade, and no hobbyist or field-observation data on its reproductive behaviour are available in the examined sources.
By comparison with other Ancistrini, male Pseudancistrus are expected to develop enlarged interopercular odontodes during breeding condition and to exhibit territorial behaviour around preferred crevice or cave spawning sites.
Breeding
No breeding records for Pseudancistrus reus in captivity exist in the available literature or hobby databases. PlanetCatfish lists no registered breeders or breeding reports for this species.
Cave-spawning with paternal brood care — the reproductive mode characteristic of the tribe Ancistrini — is the expected but unconfirmed mode for this species. Given its small adult size (under 3 in SL), clutch sizes would likely be modest compared with larger loricariid species.
In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus reus is not established in the ornamental trade and has not been reported in hobby literature as a kept species. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers, wish-list entries, or field sightings from aquarists as of the date this article was written.
Its small size — under 3 in SL — would make it suitable for a moderately sized aquarium if it were ever to become available. Water conditions matching the type locality (warm, soft, slightly acidic: 79–84 °F, pH 6.4–7.0, very low hardness) would be appropriate starting parameters. Strong filtration, good current, and rock structure for grazing and shelter are indicated by its riverine microhabitat.
Any specimens entering trade would most likely be wild-caught from the Caroní drainage. Given the rarity of collection records, hobbyists encountering this species should note the specific locality data and contribute observations to public databases.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus reus as Data Deficient (DD) on 30 May 2017. The Data Deficient designation reflects the scarcity of information: the species is known from a narrow collecting site in the Caroní drainage, and insufficient data exist to determine its population size, range extent, or susceptibility to decline.
The Río Caroní basin in Estado Bolívar, Venezuela, is home to major hydroelectric infrastructure, including the Guri Dam (one of the world's largest reservoirs by volume), which has significantly altered hydrology and aquatic habitats in parts of the drainage. How these changes affect the specific side-channel microhabitats in which P. reus was collected is not documented. Until more collections are made and the species' range and population are better characterised, a meaningful threat assessment is not possible.
