A slender whiptail catfish from the Río Beni basin of Bolivia, Rineloricaria beni is one of the smaller members of this diverse South American genus — a subtle, sand-coloured fish whose breeding biology, like that of its relatives, centres on paternal care of eggs inside sheltered tubes.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria beni was described by Franz Steindachner in 1902 from material collected at Lake Rogoagua in the Río Beni basin, Bolivia — a type locality within the greater Madeira drainage of the Amazon basin. The species has travelled under several combinations as generic concepts in the tribe Harttiini have been revised: it appears in the older literature under Loricaria beni and Hemiloricaria beni, but the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Rineloricaria beni (Steindachner, 1902).

The genus Rineloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes, which are distinguished from the armoured plecos of Hypostominae by their extremely elongate, depressed bodies, reduced armour in certain fin and abdominal regions, and the characteristic filamentous caudal extensions that give the group its common name. With upward of 60 valid species, Rineloricaria is among the most species-rich loricariid genera and remains incompletely revised.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL), placing R. beni among the smaller species in the genus. The body is highly depressed and elongated, tapering into a slender caudal peduncle with the characteristic whiptail extension. Like all loricariines, the ventral surface is only partly armoured — the abdominal plates are reduced compared with those of plated plecos — and the mouth is a ventral, sucker-like disc suited to grazing biofilm from hard surfaces.

Ground coloration is typically a pale brownish or sandy tan, often with a pattern of darker saddles or spots arranged across the dorsal surface and flanks; this cryptic patterning blends effectively with fine substrates and leaf litter. The exact pattern can vary between individuals and populations.

Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of the genus: males in breeding condition develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and along the pectoral fin spines, giving sexually active males a bristly, roughened appearance on the leading edge of the pectorals and on the sides of the head. Females are somewhat broader across the abdomen when gravid. Outside breeding condition the sexes are difficult to distinguish reliably.

Habitat

Rineloricaria beni is recorded from the Río Beni basin of Bolivia, a major tributary of the Río Madeira within the Amazon drainage. The type locality, Lake Rogoagua, is an oxbow or floodplain lake associated with the Beni lowlands — suggesting that the species inhabits not only main-channel substrates but also still or slow-moving floodplain waters, seasonally connected to the river system.

In keeping with the habits of other whiptail catfishes, R. beni is a benthic species that rests pressed against the substrate — sandy bottoms, leaf litter, and submerged woody debris are all likely microhabitats. The lowland Bolivian tributaries of the Madeira basin are typically warm, with soft to moderately mineralised water; fine sediment and seasonal flood-pulse dynamics are characteristic of the region. Specific water-chemistry data for this species at its type locality are not available from the literature.

Feeding

Like other Rineloricaria species, R. beni is a detritivore and biofilm grazer in the wild. The ventral suckermouth and fine teeth are adapted to rasping aufwuchs, periphyton, and organic detritus from hard substrates such as wood, rock, and compacted sediment. Soft plant material, algae, and fine organic particles settling on the bottom likely form part of the natural diet as well.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to prepared foods. Algae wafers, sinking catfish pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional offerings of bloodworm or other small invertebrate foods all maintain condition. A sandy substrate with scattered leaf litter or driftwood encourages natural foraging behaviour and provides a more secure environment.

Mating

Courtship and mate selection in Rineloricaria follow the general loricariine pattern. Males establish and defend territories around suitable spawning sites — typically narrow, enclosed structures such as hollow canes, PVC tubing, or dense root tangles — and use their hypertrophied odontodes both as displays to rivals and as tactile signals during courtship. A male in full breeding condition, with pronounced pectoral and rostral bristles, is a clearly distinguishable visual cue.

Females appear to select males at least partly on the basis of territory quality; a well-positioned tube or cavity in stable substrate is a premium resource. Once a female enters a prepared site, spawning may occur in quick succession. Hobbyist accounts for the broader genus note that males may court more than one female across a season, though active egg-guarding males tend not to engage in further courtship while a clutch is developing.

Breeding

Rineloricaria species are cavity spawners with paternal brood care, and R. beni is expected to conform to this well-documented pattern. The male selects and occupies a narrow tube, cave, or crevice; after the female deposits her adhesive eggs inside, the male takes sole responsibility for the clutch, fanning the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs.

Incubation typically lasts several days at tropical temperatures, after which the fry emerge as fully formed miniature adults bearing the parental pattern. The male continues to guard until the fry become mobile and disperse. Conditioning on a varied diet, regular water changes, and provision of appropriate spawning tubes are the standard prerequisites for spawning whiptail catfishes in captivity.

In the aquarium

At around 3 in SL, R. beni is a manageable aquarium subject. A species tank or a quiet community aquarium with fine-grained sandy substrate suits it well — the fish need to rest on and sift through soft substrate, and coarse gravel can abrade the unarmoured ventral surface. A tank of 15–20 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group, with appropriately sized hollow canes or narrow PVC tubes provided as both refuges and potential spawning sites.

Water conditions should approximate the warm, soft-to-moderately-mineralised conditions of the Bolivian lowland Amazon: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, low to moderate hardness. Good filtration and regular water changes are important, as whiptail catfishes are sensitive to deteriorating water quality.

Rineloricaria beni is peaceful and reclusive; it will spend much of the day motionless, pressed against a surface or inside a shelter. Tankmates should be similarly non-aggressive. Avoid boisterous or large fish that might compete with it for resting spots or food. The species is not a significant algae eater and should not be purchased with that expectation; its value to the hobbyist is primarily as an interesting, understated, and reproducible bottom dweller.

Conservation

FishBase reports R. beni as Least Concern under IUCN criteria. The species is distributed within the Río Beni basin of Bolivia, a river system that remains relatively intact in its upper reaches, though lowland portions face pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and associated sedimentation. Specific IUCN assessment documentation was not confirmed during research for this article; the Least Concern attribution is sourced from FishBase.

Rineloricaria beni is infrequently encountered in the aquarium trade; it is not targeted for large-scale commercial collection and captive breeding, while achievable, is not widespread. The species' modest size and quiet nature make it suitable for interested specialists, and growing captive populations would reduce any dependence on wild collection.
