One of the oldest-described whiptails in South American ichthyology, Rineloricaria cadeae has been known since 1868 from the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil and Uruguay. A quintessential sandy-group Rineloricaria — plain-coloured, slender, and partial to sandy substrate margins — it remains virtually absent from the aquarium trade despite a century and a half of scientific familiarity.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria cadeae was first described by Reinhold Hensel in 1868, making it one of the earliest-named species in the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 5373) places it as the valid combination Rineloricaria cadeae (Hensel, 1868), the parenthetical authority reflecting a subsequent generic reassignment from its original combination.

The species was subject to extensive taxonomic scrutiny in a landmark 2008 paper by Rodriguez and Reis published in Copeia (2008, number 2, pages 333–349), which reviewed all Rineloricaria from the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil. That review recognised R. cadeae as belonging to the 'sandy group' — a cluster of species sharing a suite of morphological features related to life on sandy substrates — and provided formal diagnoses separating it from close relatives including R. quadrensis, R. misionera, R. strigilata, R. catamarcensis, R. longicauda, R. pareiacantha, and R. thrissoceps. No synonyms are currently listed, and the species has no established common name.

Morphology

Rineloricaria cadeae reaches approximately 5 in standard length (SL). The body follows the typical whiptail loricariid plan: strongly dorsoventrally compressed, elongate, with a wide depressed head narrowing to a slender caudal peduncle. Ground colour is a plain light brown without the dark vermiculated spots or blotches found in some congeners — the plain coloration is one of the sandy-group diagnostic characters distinguishing it from R. strigilata.

The tip of the snout bears an elongate naked area that reaches the most anterior pore of the infraorbital sensory canal — a key diagnostic feature separating sandy-group Rineloricaria (including R. cadeae) from species in which the naked area is shorter. The dorsal unbranched caudal-fin ray is not prolonged as a filament, separating R. cadeae from R. catamarcensis. Usually three series of plates occupy the space between the lateral abdominal plates; the pectoral girdle is typically covered by five to six plates transversally. Body depth at the anal-fin origin falls between 7.9 and 9.4 percent SL — a slightly deeper body than the most elongate relatives.

Males in breeding condition develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and pectoral spines, characteristic of the genus. Females are broader across the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria cadeae is distributed through the Laguna dos Patos drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and into Uruguay. Laguna dos Patos is the largest coastal lagoon in South America, fed by major river systems including the Jacuí drainage; the associated rivers and streams span a range of sizes and current conditions across the southernmost portion of Brazil.

FishBase characterises the species as freshwater and demersal, occurring in watercourses with slow to fast flow, clear to brown water, over rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms. Adults show a preference for sandy-substrate areas, consistent with their assignment to the sandy morphological group; juveniles prefer marginal leaf-litter zones. The species is a facultative air-breather. The latitude of the Laguna dos Patos catchment means the region experiences genuine temperate seasonality, with winter temperatures markedly lower than those in tropical Brazilian drainages.

Feeding

Rineloricaria cadeae is presumed to graze periphyton, biofilm, fine algae, and organic detritus from sandy and rocky substrate surfaces, as typical for the genus. Whiptail loricariids use their ventrally positioned bicuspid-toothed mouths to scrape attached microbial and algal films; fine organic matter and aquatic insect larvae in sediment are also likely ingested incidentally.

No published stomach-content study specific to this species is available. In the aquarium, congeners that have been kept accept algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched vegetables such as courgette and cucumber, and fine-grade sinking pellets.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship in R. cadeae have been published. Based on well-studied Rineloricaria congeners, males in breeding condition — identifiable by their hypertrophied snout and pectoral odontodes — establish territories around prospective spawning sites such as crevices between stones, hollow cavities in woody debris, or depressions beneath flat rocks on sandy substrate.

Males compete with rivals through lateral displays and potentially direct contact, with the broadened, odontode-bearing head and pectoral spine serving as both weapons and ornaments. Receptive females are drawn toward males occupying suitable territories and, when conditioned, show a distinctly broader body profile when viewed from above.

Breeding

No confirmed aquarium breeding reports for R. cadeae are on record in the major catfish hobbyist databases. The reproductive biology is inferred from the genus: Rineloricaria species are substrate-spawning paternal mouthbrooders or egg-guarders, depending on the account, with the male attending the clutch in a sheltered cavity, fanning the eggs with pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygen supply, and removing dead or fungused eggs.

The temperate-subtropical origin of this species suggests it may require a seasonal temperature drop — or at minimum, a period of cooler conditions — to come into breeding condition, analogous to other southerly loricariids. Clutch size and incubation duration are not documented for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria cadeae is not known in the aquarium hobby and has no published care records from private keepers. Its occurrence across the temperate Laguna dos Patos catchment suggests it would be more cold-tolerant than tropical whiptails, potentially suited to cool-water aquaria or even unheated tanks in temperate regions — similar to Loricaria simillima and some other southern South American loricariids.

If encountered, general Rineloricaria care principles would apply: a fine-sand substrate (matching its sandy-group habitat preference), smooth stones for shelter, gentle current, and good oxygenation. A diet of algae wafers, spirulina foods, and blanched vegetables would be appropriate. Its modest size (around 5 in SL) means it would fit comfortably in a mid-sized aquarium of 20 US gal or more alongside peaceful, similarly cool-adapted tankmates.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria cadeae as Least Concern in November 2018. The species' broad distribution across the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil and Uruguay, combined with its occupation of a range of watercourse types, underpins this assessment.

The Pampa biome of Rio Grande do Sul — through which much of the species' range runs — faces ongoing agricultural intensification, particularly large-scale soybean and rice cultivation, which increases sedimentation and agrochemical runoff in river systems. Riverine riparian vegetation loss is widespread. While none of these pressures currently appear sufficient to threaten R. cadeae at the species level, localised population impacts in degraded drainages are plausible. The species is not commercially collected for the aquarium trade.
