Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria cubataonis was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1907 as Loricaria cubataonis. The type locality is the Rio Cubatão near Theresópolis (the colonial-era name for the Joinville region) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Rineloricaria cubataonis (Steindachner, 1907) as valid, with the original genus-level assignment now treated as a junior synonym under the current generic placement.
A critical taxonomic difficulty hangs over this species: the holotype deposited at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW) has not been located, and is reported as missing in the Catalog of Fishes. The absence of type material has prevented a formal redescription and complicates attempts to establish definitive species boundaries with the several Rineloricaria congeners that occur sympatrically or parapatrically along the same coastal drainages between Rio de Janeiro and southern Santa Catarina. A review of coastal southeastern Brazilian Rineloricaria published in Neotropical Ichthyology identified eight species from this geographically restricted coastal belt, of which R. cubataonis is one, but the species-level identifications remain provisional in the absence of a type-anchored redescription.
Rineloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail and otocinclus allies — distinguished from the larger subfamilies by the depressed, ribbon-like body plan, an elongated caudal peduncle, and the absence of an adipose fin in most members.
Morphology
The maximum recorded size is 2 in standard length (SL), making R. cubataonis among the smaller species in a genus where most members reach 3–6 in SL. This relatively diminutive size may reflect an adaptation to the small coastal streams of the Serra do Mar, which differ markedly in catchment size and flow regime from the larger inland river systems where larger Rineloricaria species occur.
The body form is the characteristic loricariin whiptail plan: strongly depressed and flattened, widest across the pectoral girdle and tapering to a long, slender caudal peduncle. The dorsal surface is covered in bony scutes forming a series of ridged keels; the ventral surface is unarmoured and pale. The head is broad and shovel-shaped with a subterminal mouth bearing fine bicuspid teeth suited to scraping algae and fine detritus from substrates.
Specific diagnostic characters distinguishing R. cubataonis from congeners in the coastal southeastern Brazilian assemblage are poorly documented in the accessible literature, a direct consequence of the missing type material and the absence of a modern redescription. Sexual dimorphism in Rineloricaria broadly involves the development by mature males of hypertrophied odontodes on the head and pectoral fin spines — giving the male's head a distinctly bristled or roughened appearance — a feature that is not documented specifically for cubataonis but is consistent across the genus.
Habitat
Rineloricaria cubataonis is known from the Rio Cubatão drainage in Santa Catarina State and is considered endemic to the geographically narrow coastal river belt east of the Serra do Mar escarpment between roughly central Rio de Janeiro State and southern Santa Catarina. This coastal belt is one of the most floristically and faunistically rich regions in South America, and the rivers draining it — short, steep-gradient coastal streams running directly to the Atlantic — differ fundamentally from the interior drainages of the Paraná–Paraguay system.
The Rio Cubatão near Joinville flows through the coastal Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), historically one of the most threatened biomes on earth. Streams in this setting tend to carry moderately clear water over rock, gravel, and sand substrates, with significant leaf litter and submerged wood in slower reaches. No water chemistry data from collection sites for R. cubataonis appears in the available sources.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to Rineloricaria cubataonis has been recorded. The fine bicuspid dentition and depressed head morphology typical of the subfamily point to a diet centred on scraping algae, diatoms, and fine periphyton from hard substrates, supplemented by fine organic detritus and the small invertebrates associated with leaf litter and sandy or gravelly stream beds.
Loricariin whiptails in general are not robust algae grazers in the manner of hypostomines, and tend to be more reliant on detritivory and fine organic matter in the wild. In captivity, species with similar ecology have been kept successfully on fine-grade sinking wafers, spirulina-based foods, and small amounts of blanched vegetables, though specific recommendations for cubataonis cannot be made without aquarium records.
Mating
Courtship behaviour has not been documented for R. cubataonis. Rineloricaria as a genus shows a mating system in which males defend cavities or selected substrate patches — a flat rock surface, a buried root, or a section of hollow wood — and attract females by displaying the hypertrophied odontodes that develop on the head and pectoral spines during breeding condition. The roughened, bristled appearance of the breeding male is thought to function as both a quality signal to females and a deterrent to rival males.
Given the very small body size of R. cubataonis, territorial requirements would be modest, but male-male competition for cavity sites likely still structures local breeding densities in stream populations. No captive records of courtship exist.
Breeding
Rineloricaria cubataonis has not been bred in captivity, and no breeding records appear in the hobbyist literature or in scientific publications focused on this species. Rineloricaria as a genus is characterised by cavity or substrate spawning with paternal egg guarding — males typically remain with the clutch, fanning the eggs and protecting them from predation and fungus until hatching.
The missing holotype and taxonomic uncertainty surrounding this species make it difficult to assess whether husbandry observations from other, better-known Rineloricaria (such as R. lanceolata or R. parva, both of which have aquarium records) would apply reliably. Until specimens enter the trade and are maintained by hobbyists, clutch size, incubation duration, and fry rearing requirements remain unknown.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria cubataonis is not known to be available in the aquarium trade as of 2026, and no hobbyist records of the species appear in the accessible literature. The combination of a small, restricted coastal range and a species identity that cannot be confirmed without the missing type specimen means that even if specimens were collected and exported from the Joinville region, they could not be reliably distinguished from congeners by non-specialists.
If specimens were to become available, the Serra do Mar coastal stream origin suggests they would require clean, well-oxygenated water, moderate current, and substrates of fine gravel and sand with leaf litter or flat rocks for shelter. The small adult size (under 2.5 in SL) would make this a manageable species in a modest aquarium. No water chemistry parameters specific to the species can be recommended from available data.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria cubataonis as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2018. The DD listing reflects the fundamental problem: without confirmed type material or a modern redescription, it is not possible to determine the true range, population size, or ecological requirements of the species with confidence, and thus not possible to evaluate its conservation status rigorously.
The Atlantic Forest coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil are among the most threatened freshwater systems in South America. Urbanisation around Joinville and the surrounding coastal lowlands, water abstraction, pollution from agricultural and industrial runoff, and the near-total historical deforestation of the Mata Atlântica have severely degraded many coastal streams. A species with a presumed restricted range centred on the Rio Cubatão drainage would face these pressures directly. The DD status should be taken as a prompt for further field survey and taxonomic resolution rather than as reassurance; the taxon's true conservation situation may be considerably worse than the listing implies.
