Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria hasemani was formally described by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1979. The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Rineloricaria (family Loricariidae, subfamily Loricariinae), a group of elongate, armour-plated catfishes sometimes collectively called whiptail plecos or loricarids. The genus currently contains more than 60 valid species, and the boundaries among many of them have historically been poorly defined, leading to a contested synonymy history. R. hasemani is treated as a valid species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The species epithet honours John Dunlop Haseman (1880–1969), the American naturalist who collected widely in South American river systems in the early twentieth century and whose collections formed the basis for numerous catfish descriptions. Haseman's expeditions to the Paraguay and upper Paraná basins in the 1907–1910 period yielded the specimens that eventually underpinned this description.
Morphology
Like all members of Rineloricaria, R. hasemani has an extremely flattened, eel-like body encased in overlapping bony plates (scutes) along the flanks and dorsal surface. The head is broad, depressed, and shovel-shaped when viewed from above. The snout is notably elongated and the mouth is ventral, bearing lip modifications suited to rasping biofilm from hard substrates. The caudal peduncle is long and laterally compressed, giving rise to a narrow, whip-like tail — the hallmark of the subfamily Loricariinae. Coloration is typically brownish or greyish with a pattern of darker saddles or reticulations across the dorsum, providing cryptic camouflage on sandy or leaf-littered riverbeds. Maximum standard length is approximately 5.5–6.5 in, though many individuals encountered are somewhat smaller. The first dorsal-fin ray is a stout, erodontulate spine. Sexual dimorphism is expressed in breeding males, which develop odontodes (small tooth-like structures) along the snout and sometimes the pectoral-fin spines, used in courtship and intrasexual competition.
Habitat
R. hasemani inhabits the slow-flowing to almost still lowland reaches of the upper Paraguay basin, including the Pantanal floodplain region, and the upper Paraná drainage in Brazil. Populations have been collected from areas of Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso) and possibly Paraguay. The species prefers shallow, warm water over soft substrates — fine sand, silt, and beds of leaf litter — in river margins, oxbow lakes, and floodplain lagoons. Water conditions in these lowland systems are typically warm (75–86 °F / 75–86 °F), moderately soft to slightly hard, and mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.2–7.4). Turbidity ranges from moderate to high during the flood season. Like other whiptail loricarids, R. hasemani is well adapted to low-oxygen conditions that can occur in sluggish floodplain backwaters, and its ventral position allows it to rest on the substrate while respiration continues via the gills in the overlying water column.
Feeding
R. hasemani is primarily an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Its ventral, sucker-like mouth is adapted for rasping fine algae, diatoms, and organic detritus from sandy or silty substrates and submerged wood surfaces. In the wild it likely also ingests fine organic particles, invertebrate larvae, and decomposing plant matter incidentally. Unlike the wood-eating Panaque/Panaqolus clade, Rineloricaria species do not possess the specialised spatulate teeth required for xylophagy; the teeth are bicuspid and suited to softer substrates. In aquaria R. hasemani readily accepts sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, courgette, spinach), and fine-grain sinking catfish pellets. Occasional supplementation with frozen or live invertebrate foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia) is beneficial for conditioning.
Mating
Spawning behaviour in R. hasemani has been little studied in the wild, but by analogy with related Rineloricaria species it is presumed to follow the general loricariin pattern. Males establish and defend small tubular or cave-like shelters — hollows beneath rocks, sunken wood, or root masses — into which females deposit adhesive egg clutches. The male's odontode development on the snout and pectoral girdle intensifies seasonally, likely driven by rising water temperature and water level fluctuations associated with the flood season. These odontodes may function both in male–male competition for nest sites and in tactile courtship stimulation of the female. In the Pantanal, seasonal flooding and the associated shifts in water temperature and conductivity likely act as the proximate cues triggering reproductive readiness.
Breeding
In captivity, breeding R. hasemani requires replicating conditions that mimic the onset of the rainy season: a gradual temperature rise from ~75 °F to 81–82 °F (75–82 °F), increased water changes with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate rain dilution, and the provision of suitable spawning caves (PVC tubes, bamboo sections, or clay tubes of approximately 1.5–2 in internal diameter). The female deposits a clutch of adhesive, yellowish eggs inside the tube, and the male takes over exclusive parental care, fanning the eggs with his fins and removing unfertilised or fungused eggs. Incubation typically takes 7–10 days at 79–82 °F. The male continues to guard the larvae until they become free-swimming and begin grazing independently. Rearing fry on fine powdered algae wafers, microworm, and fine vegetable matter is recommended.
In the aquarium
R. hasemani is an undemanding but somewhat shy whiptail catfish suitable for community aquaria housing peaceful, similarly-sized South American species. A minimum tank size of 20–25 US gal is appropriate for a single specimen or a pair; a larger footprint is preferable given the species' active nocturnal movement across the substrate. The substrate should be fine sand or very fine gravel to allow natural sifting behaviour. Provide abundant shelter: PVC tubes, driftwood, coconut shell halves, and dense plantings all help reduce stress. Water parameters should be kept in the range 75–84 °F (75–84 °F), pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness 2–12 °dH. Good filtration with moderate current is recommended, but avoid strong laminar flow — this is a fish of slow backwaters. Feed primarily on algae wafers and blanched vegetables, supplemented with protein-rich sinking foods two or three times weekly. R. hasemani is generally peaceful with other species but males may spar over territory and hiding spots.
Conservation
R. hasemani has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the available records, so its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species inhabits the Pantanal ecoregion, one of the world's largest tropical wetlands and an area of significant conservation concern. Threats to the Pantanal include agricultural runoff, sedimentation from deforestation of riparian zones, infrastructure development (dams and roads), and increasing drought frequency linked to climate change. The upper Paraná drainage has already lost a substantial portion of its original floodplain connectivity due to hydroelectric development and channelisation. Although R. hasemani is not a target of commercial fisheries, the degradation of floodplain habitats that it depends upon could affect local population densities. Formal assessment of this species' population status and range extent would be valuable.
