Rineloricaria kronei is a slender whiptail catfish endemic to the Ribeira de Iguape drainage of southeastern Brazil — one of the few loricariids confined entirely to the Atlantic slope of South America rather than the great Orinoco or Amazon systems. Mature males develop conspicuous tufts of interopercular odontodes that mark the genus as whole, and like its relatives this species shelters among submerged wood and leaf litter in cool, fast-moving hill streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria kronei was formally described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1911 and is recognised as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). It belongs to the large and diverse genus Rineloricaria within subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — which are characterised by a strongly depressed body, an elongated caudal peduncle, and the absence of an adipose fin in many species, though R. kronei retains a small one.

The species is a member of what ichthyologists working on this group recognise informally as the Ribeira de Iguape lineage of Rineloricaria — a cluster of Atlantic-slope species phylogenetically distinct from the Amazonian and Orinoco clades. A 2021 ZooKeys paper treating relationships within this assemblage places kronei among the taxa endemic to the Ribeira de Iguape Atlantic drainage.

The genus name combines the Greek rhinos (nose) and the Latin lorica (cuirass or body armour), alluding to the characteristic bony plates that encase the body. The species epithet honours Sigismund Ernst Richard (Ricardo) Krone (1861–1917), a German-born pharmacist and naturalist who settled in Iguape, São Paulo, where he made substantial natural-history collections and was the first to send specimens of this fish to science.

Morphology

R. kronei reaches a maximum recorded total length of approximately 6.5 in; one measured specimen in the literature stands at 4.5 in SL, indicating that most adults fall below 6 in TL. The body is strongly depressed and tapers to a whip-like caudal filament — the hallmark of Loricariinae. Bony scutes cover the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with the ventral surface largely unplated. Coloration is typical for the genus: shades of brown with a variable darker mottling that provides camouflage against sand, gravel, and leaf substrates.

The dorsal fin formula is I/7 and the anal fin I/5; a small adipose fin is present. The mouth is positioned ventrally and bears the fine teeth suited to scraping biofilm, algae, and soft organic material from surfaces.

Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Rineloricaria pattern. Reproductively active males develop conspicuously hypertrophied odontodes on the interoperculum (cheek region), forming visible bristle-like tufts during the breeding season. Males also develop odontodes along the leading edges of the pectoral fins and dorsum. Females are generally wider-bodied when gravid and lack the pronounced cheek odontodes.

Habitat

The species is endemic to three drainages of the Atlantic slope of southeastern Brazil: the Rio Ribeira de Iguape, the Rio Betari (a tributary within the Ribeira system), and the Rio Mogi Guaçu — an upper Paraná tributary in São Paulo state. The Ribeira de Iguape system is notable as one of the better-preserved Atlantic Forest river systems, flowing through hilly terrain with dense riparian vegetation. The type locality lies in the vicinity of Iguape, at approximately 24.5°S, 48.6°W.

These are cool, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers flowing over rock, gravel, and sandy substrates, with abundant accumulations of submerged wood and leaf litter. The Rio Betari in particular includes stretches draining through karst terrain. Waters in this region tend to be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, influenced by Atlantic Forest soils, though no specific field measurements for R. kronei localities have been published.

R. kronei is a freshwater, demersal species. It is a facultative air-breather at the genus level — a trait common to Rineloricaria that allows brief survival in poorly oxygenated conditions.

Feeding

Like other members of Rineloricaria, R. kronei is a microalgivore and biofilm grazer. It uses its ventrally positioned, sucker-like mouth to rasp fine algae, diatoms, periphyton, and the associated microbial film from rock surfaces, submerged wood, and leaf litter. The FishBase-assigned trophic level of 2.5 is consistent with a diet based primarily on plant-derived material and detritus rather than live invertebrate prey.

In captivity the species accepts algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) and cucumber, and sinking catfish pellets. Live or frozen small invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp) are consumed but should be a minor fraction of the diet. Driftwood is beneficial in the aquarium both as enrichment and as a source of biofilm and organic matter to graze.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Rineloricaria follows a pattern consistent across the genus. Males establish and defend cavity sites — crevices between rocks, sections of hollow driftwood, or dense leaf accumulations — and display their enlarged interopercular odontodes to rivals and prospective mates. Territorial males will posture and may engage in physical contact, using their armoured bodies and pectoral spines in low-level confrontations.

Conditioned females, recognisable by their broader body profile and undeveloped cheek bristles, are courted into the male's chosen cavity. In aquaria, successful courtship is facilitated by good conditioning on a varied diet, stable cool water, and the presence of suitable spawning sites. Males with the most prominent odontodes appear to be preferred, consistent with the hypothesis that odontode elaboration in loricariids is a sexually selected trait.

Breeding

R. kronei is a cavity spawner. The female deposits adhesive eggs within the male's defended cavity, and the male then assumes sole responsibility for brood care. He fans the clutch continuously with his fins to maintain oxygen flow, removing any unfertilised or fungused eggs. Specific clutch sizes for this species have not been published, but closely related Rineloricaria species typically deposit a few dozen to roughly one hundred eggs per spawn.

Egg incubation lasts approximately one week at moderate temperatures. Newly hatched fry are initially sustained by their yolk sacs and begin free-feeding on biofilm and fine particulate matter within days. The male guards the fry for a short period before they disperse to feed independently. Successful breeding in aquaria has been achieved by providing flat rocks, sections of PVC pipe, or hollow driftwood as spawning caves, and conditioning adults with protein-rich supplemental foods in the weeks before spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

R. kronei is an undemanding species for a keeper with experience of loricariids, though its specific Atlantic-slope provenance means it appreciates somewhat cooler water than many Amazonian whiptails — temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F are appropriate, matching the hill-stream conditions of the Ribeira de Iguape system. A minimum aquarium length of 47 in is recommended to accommodate the species' length and need for territory.

Substrate should be fine sand or smooth gravel; coarse or sharp substrates can abrade the ventral surface. Driftwood, smooth rocks, and leaf litter (dried Indian almond or oak leaves) replicate the natural microhabitat and provide essential grazing surfaces. Moderate current from efficient filtration is beneficial, and water quality should be maintained with regular partial changes. The species can be kept individually or in small groups if adequate hiding spots are distributed throughout the tank.

R. kronei is peaceful toward fish of other species and can be combined with small, non-aggressive midwater fish — tetras, rasboras, and other cool-water species from Atlantic Forest streams. It is not suited to warm tropical set-ups designed for discus or other high-temperature species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria kronei as Least Concern in November 2018, finding no evidence of major identified threats and no quantified population decline. The Ribeira de Iguape basin retains significant Atlantic Forest cover compared to heavily deforested drainages further north, and the species occurs across multiple sub-drainages.

Nonetheless, the Atlantic Forest biome as a whole has been reduced to less than 15% of its original extent, and water quality in some Ribeira de Iguape tributaries is affected by agricultural runoff, eucalyptus plantations, and hydroelectric development. As an endemic with a naturally limited range, R. kronei deserves continued monitoring. Its status within the ornamental trade is minor; the species is seldom seen in the hobby outside specialist catfish enthusiasts.
