Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria malabarbai was described by Marcelo S. Rodriguez and Roberto E. Reis in 2008, in a taxonomic review of Rineloricaria from the Laguna dos Patos drainage published in Copeia (2008(2): 333–349). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species (CoF species id 70213); because the authors placed it directly in Rineloricaria, the authority carries no parentheses.
The species sits in the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes, within the suckermouth-armoured catfish family Loricariidae. Rineloricaria is a large genus of slender, depressed-bodied whiptails, and the Laguna dos Patos drainage of southern Brazil has been a particular focus of revisionary work — the 2008 study that named this species also clarified several closely related forms.
The species epithet honours Brazilian ichthyologist Luiz Roberto Malabarba.
Morphology
Rineloricaria malabarbai reaches a maximum recorded length of about 4 in standard length (male/unsexed), placing it among the smaller whiptails of the genus. It has the elongated, dorsoventrally flattened body and slender tapering tail characteristic of Rineloricaria.
Its most distinctive diagnostic feature is the abdomen, which is almost completely naked (unplated) except for a single preanal complex of plates connected to the lateral abdominal plates by one or two small squarish platelets at the base of the pelvic-fin spine — a condition it shares only with R. maquinensis, which lacks those squarish platelets. The two species are further separated by body proportions: R. malabarbai has a longer predorsal region, shorter postanal region, longer abdomen, wider cleithrum, and deeper head. It also differs from R. aequalicuspis in having asymmetrical tooth cusps.

Habitat
Rineloricaria malabarbai occurs in the Rio Jacuí and Rio Camaquã drainages of the Laguna dos Patos system, in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical-to-subtropical waters.
It inhabits slow- to fast-flowing watercourses with clear or brown water, usually over rocky bottoms. Like other members of the genus, it is a facultative air-breather able to use atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen is low.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study for Rineloricaria malabarbai is available. FishBase lists a trophic level of approximately 2.6, consistent with the omnivorous-to-detritivorous grazing habits typical of whiptail loricariins, which rasp biofilm, algae, fine detritus, and small invertebrates from hard substrates. Captive dietary requirements are not documented in the available sources.

Breeding
No breeding records exist for Rineloricaria malabarbai in the available sources. Whiptail loricariins as a group are generally substrate- or cavity-spawners with paternal egg care, but this has not been confirmed for this species and should not be assumed.

Rineloricaria malabarbai is not an established aquarium species, and no husbandry information is available. General care of small Rineloricaria whiptails involves clean, well-oxygenated water, a fine substrate, moderate current, and biofilm-rich grazing surfaces, but no species-specific guidance can be offered responsibly here.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria malabarbai as Least Concern on 7 November 2018. As a freshwater species restricted to the Jacuí and Camaquã drainages of the Laguna dos Patos system, it could be locally exposed to habitat alteration and water-quality pressures, but it is not currently considered threatened.
