Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria maquinensis was described by Roberto Reis and Andréia Cardoso in 2001 from the Rio Maquiné basin in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It belongs to the family Loricariidae, subfamily Loricariinae, and is placed within the large and morphologically diverse genus Rineloricaria. The species is treated as valid in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The species epithet maquinensis is a toponym, derived from the name of the type-locality river system, Rio Maquiné, following the standard practice of naming newly described restricted-range species after their geographic origin. The Rio Maquiné flows through the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul before emptying into the Lagoa dos Quadros coastal lagoon system. The description by Reis and Cardoso (2001) included a careful comparison with other southern Brazilian Rineloricaria species to establish its distinctiveness.
Morphology
R. maquinensis conforms to the typical Rineloricaria body plan: strongly depressed, elongated, and encased in bony scutes. The head is broad and shovel-like, bearing a ventral mouth with fleshy, papillose lips suited for rasping biofilm from rocky and sandy substrates. The caudal peduncle is slender and extends into a characteristic whip-like tail. It is a relatively small species within the genus, with adults reaching approximately 4–5 in standard length. Coloration is brownish to ochre above, paler ventrally, with dark saddle markings across the dorsal surface that provide camouflage against the mottled riverbed. The iris often shows a yellowish or golden tint. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: breeding males develop odontodes (bristle-like denticles) on the snout and along the pectoral girdle. These are entirely absent or vestigial in females.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Rio Maquiné drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, making it one of the most geographically restricted Rineloricaria species. The Rio Maquiné is a coastal Atlantic Forest stream characterised by fast, well-oxygenated, cold to cool water (64–75 °F / 64–75 °F) over a mix of rocky outcrops, cobble, and coarse sand. The Atlantic Forest streams of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina are notably cooler than Amazonian systems, fed partly by rainfall runoff from the Serra Gaúcha highlands. Water chemistry is soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.2–7.2, conductivity typically low). R. maquinensis is found in shallow runs and riffles as well as in quieter pools behind boulders, typically in or near cover of riparian vegetation. Its association with intact Atlantic Forest riparian zones is a defining ecological trait.
Feeding
R. maquinensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer adapted to rocky stream substrates. The ventral mouth with enlarged lips is used for rasping periphyton — the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic detritus that colonises surfaces in fast-flowing streams. In the cool, clear, well-lit streams of the Serra Gaúcha, periphyton biomass on cobbles and boulders can be substantial, providing a reliable food base. Fine detrital particles and invertebrate matter are likely ingested incidentally. In captivity the species readily accepts sinking spirulina wafers, blanched courgette (zucchini) and cucumber, and algae-based pellets. Given the cooler water of its natural range, feeding rates are somewhat lower than in tropical congeners; overfeeding should be avoided.
Mating
No field observations of courtship in R. maquinensis are available in the published literature. By analogy with related southern Brazilian Rineloricaria species from similar Atlantic Forest stream habitats, mating is expected to follow the standard loricariin pattern: males compete for possession of rocky cavities or hollows beneath boulders that serve as spawning sites, and court females with tactile stimulation using the odontode-bearing snout. In the cooler, seasonally variable streams of Rio Grande do Sul, spawning is likely triggered by rising water temperatures in spring (October–November in the Southern Hemisphere), coinciding with increased flow from seasonal rainfall. Male odontode elaboration intensifies in the weeks prior to spawning, likely hormonally driven by temperature and photoperiod cues.
Breeding
Captive breeding reports for R. maquinensis are sparse in the hobbyist literature, consistent with the species' rarity in the trade. Aquarists attempting to breed it should replicate the cool, well-oxygenated conditions of Atlantic Forest streams. Recommended water temperature is 68–75 °F (68–75 °F) — significantly cooler than many Amazonian loricarids. Conditioning water changes should be frequent and slightly below ambient temperature to mimic rain-season conditions. Spawning caves of PVC pipe or smooth stone tiles with a small entrance are suitable. As with all Rineloricaria, the male guards the egg clutch inside the cave and fans the eggs until hatching (approximately 8–12 days at 72 °F). Fry are mobile within a few days of hatching and should be reared on fine algae powder, infusoria, and microworm in a clean, well-filtered grow-out vessel.
In the aquarium
R. maquinensis is a specialist fish for aquarists interested in southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest biotope systems or in the cooler-water end of the Rineloricaria spectrum. It is rarely available through the trade and when encountered is most likely to be offered by hobbyist breeders or specialist importers. A tank of at least 20 US gal with a fine sand and smooth cobble substrate is appropriate. Unlike many Amazonian loricarids, this species requires cool, well-oxygenated water — keep temperature in the 66–75 °F (66–75 °F) range; this makes it unsuitable for tropical community tanks but compatible with other cool-water South American species such as Australoheros facetus or subtropical characins. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, low to moderate hardness. Strong filtration and surface agitation are recommended. Diet follows the genus standard: algae wafers, blanched vegetables, supplemented with protein-rich foods two to three times weekly. Avoid large, aggressive, or warm-water tankmates.
Conservation
R. maquinensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated, NE). However, its apparent endemism to the Rio Maquiné drainage makes it intrinsically vulnerable to local habitat degradation. The Atlantic Forest biome, within which the Rio Maquiné flows, is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots; it has lost over 85% of its original extent, and the remaining fragments are under ongoing pressure from agriculture, urbanisation, and silviculture. The Rio Maquiné catchment has experienced deforestation of riparian corridors, sedimentation from agricultural runoff, and catchment modification. Loss of shading riparian vegetation raises water temperatures, which could exceed the thermal tolerance of this cool-adapted species. A formal IUCN assessment should consider both range size and habitat trajectory; a preliminary assessment could plausibly place it in a threatened category depending on subpopulation viability data.
