A large whiptail catfish from the upper Amazon drainage of Peru, Rineloricaria morrowi was described by Fowler in 1940 from the Ucayali basin and is notable among its genus for reaching over 6.5 in — one of the longer species in this diverse group of benthic loricariines.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria morrowi was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940, with the original description published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 91 for 1939, pages 244, figures 39–41). The type locality is Contamana on the Río Ucayali, Peru — the same collecting ground from which Fowler described several other Peruvian loricariines in the same paper, including R. wolfei.

The species has been placed in the synonymous genera Hemiloricaria and Rhineloricaria in the older literature, but the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Rineloricaria morrowi Fowler, 1940. The genus Rineloricaria is assigned to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes, within Loricariidae. No common name has been established for this species in the hobby or scientific literature.

Morphology

Rineloricaria morrowi is one of the larger species in the genus, reaching approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL) — roughly equivalent to 6.5 inches. The body plan is the typical loricariine form: profoundly flattened, with a broad, depressed head and a body that narrows progressively to a long, slender caudal peduncle bearing fine filamentous caudal extensions. Bony scutes cover the dorsal and lateral surfaces; the abdominal midline carries reduced or absent armour compared to the flanks, as in all loricariines.

Coloration is cryptic: a pale sandy or brownish ground with darker saddle-shaped markings across the back and spots or vermiculations on the flanks, providing camouflage against natural substrates. Hobbyist photographs include a ventral view, confirming the pale, lightly scuted underside typical of the subfamily.

Sexual dimorphism is expressed most strongly in breeding condition: males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and on the pectoral fin spines, creating a bristled appearance in the head and pectoral region. Females lack these enlarged odontodes and appear broader across the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria morrowi is recorded from the Río Ucayali and Río Marañón basins of Peru, with additional records from near Iquitos — a city at the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón where they form the Amazon proper. One hobbyist image caption places a specimen as originating from a swamp near the Río Itaya at Iquitos, indicating that the species can also be found in still or slow-moving floodplain habitats associated with the main river system.

The preferred temperature range documented for this species is 68–75 °F, which is notably cooler than is often cited for Amazonian fishes — consistent with floodplain swamp and shaded, slowly flowing habitats where temperatures are more moderate than in sun-exposed main channels. Substrates in these environments are typically fine-grained silt or sand with accumulations of leaf litter and submerged wood. The Ucayali and Marañón carry sediment-laden whitewater for much of the year, but floodplain pools and swamp environments adjacent to them can be softer and more tannin-stained.

Feeding

As a loricariine catfish, R. morrowi is a benthic detritivore and biofilm grazer. The ventral suckermouth and fine dentition are adapted to rasping organic material — algae, bacterial and fungal films, fine detritus, and diatoms — from surfaces such as submerged wood, leaf litter, roots, and sediment. Incidental ingestion of small invertebrates and particulate organic matter is likely in the wild.

In captivity the diet should consist primarily of plant-based and algae-rich foods: algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables including courgette, cucumber, and spinach are all appropriate. The reported temperature range (68–75 °F) should be noted when managing this species alongside other fish; keeping it at the cooler end of its range may support its condition better than the warmer parameters typical of many Amazonian community setups.

Mating

Rineloricaria morrowi is presumed to follow the genus-typical courtship pattern: males establish and defend spawning sites, displaying hypertrophied odontodes as signals to rivals and potential mates, and invite females to deposit eggs in a prepared cavity or tube. The pronounced odontode development in breeding males is likely both a competitive display and a tactile signal during close-range courtship interactions.

Given the species' relatively large body size (up to 6.5 in SL), spawning tubes or cavities of correspondingly larger diameter are needed than for smaller whiptail species. Hobbyist documentation remains sparse; however, the genus-level pattern is well established from accounts of smaller, more frequently kept Rineloricaria species.

Breeding

Like all Rineloricaria, R. morrowi is expected to be a cavity spawner with strict paternal brood care. The male occupies and defends a narrow shelter, spawning occurs inside it, and the male subsequently guards the clutch — fanning eggs with pectoral fin movements to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile eggs to prevent fungal spread. The male remains with the fry until they become free-swimming and disperse.

No breeding reports were confirmed on PlanetCatfish for this species as of the time of writing, making it less well documented in captivity than some congeners. However, the six registered keepers and existing photographic documentation suggest that the species is maintained by interested specialists. The lower temperature preference (68–75 °F) is an important conditioning variable; attempting to spawn this species at the 79–82 °F common in Amazonian community tanks may reduce breeding success. Provision of appropriately sized spawning tubes, regular water changes, and a varied, vegetable-rich diet are the standard prerequisites.

In the aquarium

At 6.5 in SL, Rineloricaria morrowi is one of the larger whiptail catfishes likely to be encountered by aquarists. It requires a spacious tank — a footprint of at least 100 × 15.5 in is advisable — with a fine sand substrate to protect the unarmoured ventral surface. Hollow bamboo sections or PVC tubes of appropriate diameter (roughly 1.5–2 in internal diameter) should be provided as both refuges and potential spawning sites.

The temperature preference of 68–75 °F is a significant husbandry consideration: this is notably cooler than the 79–82 °F often maintained in general tropical community tanks. It is better suited to a species-specific setup or a community of fishes with similar cool-to-moderate temperature requirements. pH 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water are appropriate based on the Ucayali origin.

The species is peaceful and undemanding in terms of aggression but is sensitive to poor water quality. Regular partial water changes and good mechanical filtration are important. Avoid boisterous or large tankmates that might outcompete this reclusive bottom-dweller for food or territory. Rineloricaria morrowi is an appealing subject for specialists with an interest in the larger, less commonly kept whiptail catfishes of the upper Amazon.

Conservation

Rineloricaria morrowi is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, last assessed in 2014. The species is distributed across the Ucayali and Marañón basins of Peru — large river systems that remain broadly intact, though sections face pressure from deforestation, sedimentation from agricultural expansion, and artisanal gold mining in the Andean foothills upstream.

The species is rarely available in the ornamental trade and is not subject to targeted collection. Its biology — low hobbyist profile, no established common name, cooler temperature preference — means it circulates primarily among specialists. Expanding captive documentation, particularly of successful breeding, would be a valuable contribution to our knowledge of this understudied loricariine.
