A slender, twig-like whiptail catfish from the Santa Lucía drainage of Uruguay, Rineloricaria pareiacantha is one of the many small Loricariinae that hug the substrate of South America's temperate-to-subtropical rivers. Little has been published on it beyond its taxonomy and a handful of distribution records, so its biology is read largely through the well-known habits of its genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria pareiacantha was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943, originally placed in the broad whiptail catfish assemblage of the family Loricariidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both list the valid combination as Rineloricaria pareiacantha (Fowler, 1943), the parentheses indicating that the species was first proposed in a different genus and has since been transferred to Rineloricaria.

The genus Rineloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the long-bodied, depressed-tailed branch of the suckermouth armoured catfishes. Loricariinae are distinguished from the other loricariid subfamilies by their flattened, often greatly elongated caudal peduncle and the absence of an adipose fin. Rineloricaria is one of the most species-rich genera in the subfamily, with many of its members poorly differentiated and several known only from limited type material — a situation that applies to R. pareiacantha, which has not been the subject of a modern revision.

Morphology

Rineloricaria pareiacantha reaches about 4 in in length (the figure reported in FishBase is given for a male or unsexed specimen). Like other members of the genus it has the characteristic whiptail body plan: a depressed head and trunk, a slender, progressively tapering caudal peduncle, and dorsal armour of overlapping bony plates. The ventral surface is flattened, suiting a substrate-hugging life.

Detailed meristic and colour data for this species are not published in the cached sources, so a precise plate count, fin-ray formula, and colour-pattern description cannot be given here without inventing them. In general, Rineloricaria species are cryptically coloured in browns and greys with darker saddles or bands that camouflage them against sand, leaf litter, and woody debris. Sexual dimorphism in the genus typically takes the form of hypertrophied odontodes (bristle-like dermal teeth) on the pectoral-fin spines and along the snout margins of mature males; whether this has been documented specifically for R. pareiacantha is not recorded in the available sources.

Rineloricaria pareiacantha is recorded from the Santa Lucía River basin of Uruguay, a temperate-to-subtropical drainage flowing to the Río de la Plata estuary. FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish of tropical waters. As with the genus generally, it is expected to occur over sand and gravel substrates among leaf litter and submerged wood, in flowing stretches where it can shelter against the bottom.

In an aquarium setting, congeners accept a primarily herbivorous and detritivorous diet: algae and spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, and fine sinking foods, supplemented occasionally with small live or frozen invertebrate foods. These husbandry notes are extrapolated from the genus; species-specific feeding data for R. pareiacantha are not recorded.

Mating

Courtship and mating behaviour have not been documented for Rineloricaria pareiacantha in the cached sources. Across the genus, Rineloricaria are cave- or crevice-spawners in which the male establishes and defends a confined site — in the wild typically a hollow in wood or among root tangles, and in aquaria frequently a narrow tube. Many whiptail species in this genus have been bred in captivity using narrow spawning tubes, but no specific clutch size, incubation period, or fry-rearing data exist for R. pareiacantha in the available sources, and none are stated here to avoid fabrication.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria pareiacantha is essentially absent from the documented aquarium trade, and no dedicated husbandry record for it appears in the cached sources. Any keeping recommendations therefore derive from experience with its better-known congeners (such as the commonly kept R. lanceolata complex).

Whiptail catfishes of this size are peaceful, retiring bottom-dwellers well suited to calm community aquaria. They appreciate a soft sand substrate, gentle to moderate flow, good oxygenation, and plenty of cover in the form of driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded retreats. Clean, well-filtered water and a varied largely-vegetarian diet support long-term health. As a temperate-drainage species from Uruguay, R. pareiacantha may tolerate — and possibly prefer — the cooler end of the tropical range, though no specific thermal data are published. These remarks are genus-level guidance, not species-verified husbandry.

Conservation

Rineloricaria pareiacantha has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its status is formally Not Evaluated (NE). It is likewise not listed under CITES.
