One of the earliest-described whiptail catfishes, Rineloricaria platyura has been part of the scientific record since 1849, when Müller and Troschel placed it among the foundational loricariid descriptions of the mid-nineteenth century. Distributed across the coastal rivers of the Guianas and adjacent northern Brazil — from near the Amazon mouth to the Essequibo — this slender, flat-tailed species is a well-established Least Concern fish whose 'broad tail' name neatly captures its most recognisable physical trait.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria platyura was originally described by Müller and Troschel in 1849. The parentheses around the authority in the current combination (Müller & Troschel, 1849) confirm that the species was not originally placed in Rineloricaria — the genus in which it now resides — but in an earlier generic assignment later superseded. The species was subsequently redescribed by le Bail et al. (2000), a systematic treatment that contributed to clarifying the taxonomy of loricariids in the Guiana region.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Rineloricaria platyura as a valid species. The genus Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862 is one of the larger genera of the subfamily Loricariinae (whiptail catfishes), encompassing dozens of species distributed across tropical and subtropical South America. Rineloricaria is distinguished from the closely allied Loricaria in part by the structure of the oral disc: Rineloricaria species lack the more elaborate feathered oral papillae that develop in adult Loricaria, and the snout tends to be somewhat narrower. No L-number or hobbyist trade code has been assigned to R. platyura.

The primary systematic reference for this species is Ferraris (2003), whose Loricariinae treatment in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America remains the standard citation for most species in the group.

Morphology

Rineloricaria platyura reaches a maximum of approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL) — making it one of the larger Rineloricaria species encountered in the Guiana region, though still a modest-sized loricariid by broader family standards. The body conformation is that of a classic whiptail: markedly depressed, broad across the pectoral girdle and tapering progressively toward the caudal peduncle, with the head flat and the ventral surface fully in contact with the substrate when at rest.

The species epithet platyura (Greek platy- = flat/broad, oura = tail) refers to the characteristically flattened or broad tail region — the caudal peduncle and fin area — that gives this species its name. The caudal fin itself may show the elongated filamentous upper lobe typical of many Rineloricaria. Body coloration is not specifically described in accessible literature; as with other Rineloricaria from Guiana coastal rivers, a pale brown to tan cryptic pattern with darker saddles or mottling is likely, suited to camouflage on the sandy or leaf-littered substrates of lowland stream beds.

Sexual dimorphism at the genus level in Rineloricaria follows the pattern common across Loricariinae: breeding males develop prominent bristle-like odontodes on the sides of the snout and interopercular region, while females are deeper-bodied when gravid. Papilla shape and size also differ between sexes in conditioned adult fish.

Habitat

Rineloricaria platyura is distributed across coastal river systems from the mouth of the Amazon to the Essequibo River in Guyana — a stretch of coastline and lowland drainage encompassing northern Brazil (Amapá state and adjacent areas), French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana. These rivers share a common character: they drain the Guiana Shield and the coastal lowlands flanking it, flowing relatively short distances from forested highlands to the Atlantic coast.

The coastal rivers of this region are typically characterised by soft, acidic to neutral water (blackwater and clearwater types) with low conductivity, seasonally variable flow, and substrates of fine sand, clay, and accumulated leaf litter. FishBase records this species as freshwater, demersal, and tropical, with facultative air-breathing capacity noted for the genus — a useful trait in warm, organically rich backwaters where dissolved oxygen can drop during the dry season. Maximum reported size (5.5 in SL) suggests this is a species of medium depth within its river systems, capable of occupying both very shallow margins and somewhat deeper runs.

The trophic level for Rineloricaria in general is low (around 2.0–2.6), consistent with a diet dominated by fine organic matter and periphyton scraped from the substrate surface.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding data has been published for Rineloricaria platyura, but the genus feeding pattern is consistent across multiple studied species. Rineloricaria are benthic grazers with oral discs adapted for scraping algae, biofilm, and fine detritus from the surface of submerged substrates — sand, silt, leaves, wood, and rock. Unlike the wood-eating Panaqolus or the hard-algae rasping Chaetostoma, Rineloricaria feed primarily on soft periphyton and organic fines. Invertebrates (small worms, crustaceans, insect larvae) encountered in the substrate are also likely consumed.

In the aquarium, a varied diet of sinking foods works well: spirulina-based algae wafers, sinking pellets, and periodic blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach leaf). Small protein-rich sinking foods — bloodworm, daphnia — supplement the diet and support conditioning for breeding. Feed in the evening or after lights-out. Because these fish live in soft, tannin-stained waters with relatively low nutrient loads in the wild, overly rich or high-protein diets are not recommended.

Mating

No specific courtship observations for Rineloricaria platyura have been published in accessible scientific or hobbyist literature as of 2026. The genus Rineloricaria has, however, been bred by hobbyists in many cases, and the courtship pattern is reasonably consistent: males develop enlarged snout and interopercular odontodes in breeding condition and compete for and defend spawning caves or crevices against rival males. A conditioned male will court a ripe female by approaching and retreating, displaying lateral flanks and ventral profile.

Soft, acidic water, slight temperature elevation, and an increase in live or frozen food are the classic conditioning triggers for Rineloricaria. Providing multiple shelter options — bamboo tubes, PVC pipe sections, ceramic caves, hollow driftwood — gives males sites to defend and allows the pair to select a preferred cavity. In larger tanks with more than one male, territorial displays and chasing between males are normal; fatalities are rare if cover is adequate.

Breeding

No captive breeding reports for Rineloricaria platyura specifically appear in the available literature or in the PlanetCatfish database as of the writing of this article — data sparse. However, many Rineloricaria species have been bred in the hobby, and the reproductive biology of the genus is well characterised enough to provide a reliable framework.

Rineloricaria are cave or crevice spawners. After courtship, the female deposits adhesive eggs inside a selected cavity. The male then takes sole responsibility for brood care: he remains in or near the cavity, fanning the egg mass with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any eggs that fail to develop. Incubation at tropical temperatures typically takes 5–8 days; fry emerge already bearing the armour scutes of juveniles and begin foraging independently within days. The male continues to guard the cavity for a period after the fry disperse.

Any hobbyist breeding R. platyura would be producing the first documented captive breeding record for this species and would be encouraged to share the observation.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria platyura is not commonly available in the ornamental trade and carries no L-number to drive collector demand. Specimens occasionally enter the market as bycatch from Guiana or northern Brazilian exports. For keepers who obtain them, the requirements are those of a soft-water Guiana whiptail.

A tank of 20 US gal or more is appropriate for a pair or small group of adults up to 5.5 in. Fine sand substrate is preferred — these fish rest, partially bury, and forage on the substrate surface, and sharp gravel can abrade the ventral surface and oral disc. Smooth, flat décor — driftwood branches, flat pebbles, dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak) — creates resting and foraging surfaces. Adequate hiding spots in the form of caves, tubes, or hollow wood sections are essential.

Water chemistry should reflect the coastal Guiana origin: temperature 72–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, low to moderate hardness. Soft, slightly acidic, tannin-stained water brings out the best condition and is conducive to any breeding attempt. Filtration should be efficient but gentle — strong turbulent flow is not appropriate for a fish from slow to moderately flowing coastal streams.

The species is peaceful toward other fish and will generally be ignored by small, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with fish large enough to swallow a 5.5 in catfish, and avoid aggressive species that will harass a resting whiptail. A small community of pencilfish, tetras, or small Corydoras from the same biogeographic zone makes a natural and harmonious combination.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria platyura as Least Concern (LC) on 3 December 2020. The assessment reflects a relatively wide distribution across the coastal river systems of the Guianas and adjacent northern Brazil — a range large enough to buffer against localised threats. No evidence of significant population decline is documented.

The coastal rivers of the Guianas and Amapá face pressures from deforestation, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (particularly mercury contamination in inland tributaries), agricultural drainage, and infrastructure development. These are real threats to freshwater biodiversity in the region, but at the scale of R. platyura's distribution — spanning multiple river systems from the Amazon mouth to the Essequibo — the species is not currently considered at risk. The IUCN LC designation does not preclude local depletion in heavily impacted tributaries; continued monitoring of Guiana Shield freshwater diversity as a whole remains a conservation priority.
