Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria tropeira was described by Ghazzi in 2008 in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122), in a paper that added nine new species to the genus from the Rio Uruguay basin of southern Brazil. The type locality is Arroio Passo do Carro, a tributary of the Rio Quatis within the Rio Pelotas drainage, collected near Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (28°36'S, 50°43'W; PlanetCatfish). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Rineloricaria tropeira Ghazzi, 2008 as the valid name; no synonyms are recorded.
The species has no recorded common name in English or Portuguese. Within Loricariidae it belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — one of the five subfamilial groupings of the family. The genus Rineloricaria, established by Bleeker in 1862, is the largest genus of Loricariinae and encompasses species distributed across much of temperate and subtropical South America east of the Andes.
Ghazzi's 2008 revision was a significant contribution to knowledge of Rineloricaria diversity in the Plata system, grouping new species by drainage and distinguishing them primarily by colour pattern, abdominal plating, and head proportions.
Morphology
Rineloricaria tropeira reaches approximately 4 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (Ref. 75800), making it one of the smaller species in the genus. PlanetCatfish concurs, recording 4 in SL.
The body is elongated and strongly depressed — the quintessential loricariin whiptail plan. Dorsal soft rays number 8 and anal soft rays 6, per FishBase. The head is broad and flat, tapering to a rounded snout with the subterminal mouth positioned ventrally. Bony scutes cover the dorsal and lateral surfaces; the abdominal plating arrangement, along with the precise coloration, would distinguish this species from the other eight new species described by Ghazzi in the same paper, though detailed comparative data are sparse in the available secondary sources.
Sexual dimorphism follows the general loricariin pattern. Breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes along the snout margin and on the pectoral spines. Females are odontode-smooth and broaden noticeably when gravid with eggs.
Habitat
Rineloricaria tropeira is known from tributaries of the Rio Pelotas and Rio Canoas — two rivers that join to form the upper Rio Uruguay — in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (FishBase). The IUCN range statement includes the upper Rio Uruguay basin more broadly.
The type locality (Arroio Passo do Carro, near Vacaria, at approximately 2953 ft elevation on the southern Brazilian planalto) suggests a cold-water habitat. The highland streams of this region are typically swift, well-oxygenated, and characterised by rocky or sandy substrates, with water temperatures that can fall considerably in winter. FishBase classifies the species as a tropical freshwater fish, though the high-altitude origin moderates temperatures relative to lowland tropical standards.
Facultative air-breathing has been documented in the genus Rineloricaria (FishBase Ref. 126274), an adaptation that may assist survival during low-oxygen periods in slower portions of the drainage.
Feeding
Like other members of Rineloricaria, R. tropeira is presumed to be a benthic biofilm and detritus grazer, scraping diatoms, algae, fine organic matter, and associated microbial films from substrate surfaces using its ventrally positioned sucker mouth. No species-specific dietary study is on record.
In the aquarium, the diet should reflect the algivore–detritivore niche: algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and fine-particulate sinking pellets are appropriate staples. Occasional offerings of small live or frozen invertebrates can supplement protein intake. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate allows natural foraging posture.
Mating
No species-specific mating observations are recorded for R. tropeira in the available sources. Based on the well-documented genus pattern, breeding males develop elaborated interopercular and pectoral odontodes and become territorial around cavity sites, displaying toward rival males and receptive females. Gravid females are visibly wider in dorsal view.
The highland origin of this species suggests that seasonal temperature fluctuations on the Rio Grande do Sul planalto — where winters are genuinely cool — may act as the primary environmental cue for breeding readiness, with rising spring temperatures and associated changes in flow and food availability triggering spawning.
Breeding
Rineloricaria tropeira is assumed to be a cavity spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the reproductive mode documented across Loricariinae and confirmed in numerous Rineloricaria species in captivity. PlanetCatfish notes no formal breeding report on file for this species specifically.
In the general genus pattern, the male selects and defends a narrow tube or crevice, and the female deposits adhesive eggs on the inner walls of the cavity. The male then fans the clutch continuously until hatching, removing infertile or fungused eggs as needed. Fry emerge as miniature adults and begin independent foraging shortly after dispersal from the brood site.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria tropeira is an uncommon fish in the hobby, with no established trade presence and no common name. Its small adult size (around 4 in SL) and robust build make it a manageable whiptail for aquarists who encounter it, but sourcing specimens is likely to require specialist contacts.
Its high-altitude origin demands cooler water than most tropical loricariids. Temperatures in the range of 61–72 °F are likely appropriate, reflecting the highland stream conditions of the Rio Grande do Sul planalto; the species may not thrive at the 79–82 °F temperatures typical of mainstream tropical aquaria. pH near neutral and moderate hardness are reasonable starting points given the highland southern-Brazil setting.
A sand substrate, smooth stones, driftwood, and one or two narrow tubes or cavity hides complete a suitable setup. As with other whiptails, the fish spends much of its time resting motionless on the substrate or pressed against surfaces; good water movement and oxygenation are advisable given its fast-water origin.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria tropeira as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. Its range is restricted to the upper Rio Uruguay basin tributaries (Rio Pelotas, Rio Canoas) in Rio Grande do Sul, a relatively limited area.
The highland streams of this region are subject to agricultural and pastoral impacts, including sedimentation from grazing and cropping activities that have long characterised the planalto economy — the same drovers' landscape that inspired the species' name. At present these pressures are not considered sufficient to threaten the species, but range restriction makes any significant habitat change in the upper Uruguay tributaries potentially consequential for local populations.
