One of nine Rineloricaria species described simultaneously from the Uruguay River basin in 2008, Rineloricaria zaina is a slender whiptail catfish distributed through the upper Uruguay drainage of southern Brazil — a region of subtropical rivers that has proved unexpectedly rich in undescribed loricariin diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria zaina was described by Marcelo Salomon Ghazzi in 2008 in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122), one of nine new Rineloricaria species erected in that single paper from the Uruguay River basin of southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 70220, genid 2945) records the valid combination Rineloricaria zaina Ghazzi, 2008.

The genus Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862 encompasses more than 60 valid species and is among the most species-rich genera in Loricariidae. The name is a compound of Greek rhinos (nose) and Latin lorica (leather corslet), pointing to the rostral flattening and bony body armour shared across the genus. These fishes belong to the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptails — distinguished by their extremely depressed body form, ventral mouth, and absence of an adipose fin.

The specific epithet zaina is not confirmed from sources consulted as to its derivation; it may reference a local toponym, a personal name, or a term from the Uruguay River region as used in the original 2008 paper.

Morphology

Rineloricaria zaina reaches 5.5 in standard length (SL), placing it among the larger members of the genus and making it a noticeably substantial whiptail by Rineloricaria standards. The body conforms to the standard Rineloricaria design: strongly depressed, widest across the pectoral girdle, sheathed in overlapping keeled scute rows, and tapering to a slender, elongated caudal peduncle. Dorsal soft rays number 8; anal soft rays number 6 (FishBase data).

The ventral disc-mouth is broad, edged with fleshy papillae, and well adapted for rasping hard substrates. The eyes are small and positioned dorsally, enabling the fish to monitor for overhead predators while pressed flat against a surface.

As in all Rineloricaria, sexual dimorphism is expressed through the development of hypertrophied odontodes in males. Sexually mature males grow elongated, bristle-like dermal denticles on the interopercular region of the head and along the leading edges of the pectoral spines — structures used in male territorial interactions and courtship. These odontodes are absent or vestigial in females, which are also noticeably broader-bodied across the mid-section when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria zaina is distributed through the upper Uruguay River basin of southern Brazil, from the confluence of the rio Canoas with the rio Pelotas downstream to the rio Ibicuí — a relatively wide stretch of the upper Uruguay drainage spanning the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. This is one of the more extensively distributed Rineloricaria in the Uruguay basin.

The upper Uruguay River and its tributaries in this region are subtropical to warm-temperate systems flowing through a mosaic of Atlantic Forest remnants and agricultural land. Seasonal variation is significant: summer months bring warmer temperatures and sometimes flooding, while austral winter reduces flows and can lower temperatures considerably. FishBase records the species as tropical, though its range extends to areas with distinctly seasonal temperature regimes.

Microhabitat for loricariin whiptails in rivers of this type typically includes sand and gravel substrates in flowing sections, alongside woody debris, root tangles, and rock surfaces where biofilm and epilithic algae develop. The species is likely to favour areas with moderate current and good oxygenation.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for R. zaina are not available in sources consulted. The species is a member of the loricariin feeding guild and almost certainly forages primarily by rasping biofilm — the complex layer of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic detritus — from hard substrates such as rocks, submerged wood, and root surfaces.

The ventral disc-mouth and robust dentition of Rineloricaria are adapted for this grazing mode. As in better-studied members of the genus, the diet likely includes a broad epilithic algae component, particularly diatoms in fast-flowing sections, supplemented by detritus and any invertebrates encountered incidentally. In the aquarium, foods appropriate to this feeding mode include algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets rich in plant-based material.

Mating

Courtship and mating behaviour in R. zaina have not been described in the literature reviewed. The general Rineloricaria pattern provides the framework: males develop prominent odontodes on the head and pectoral spines during reproductive readiness, and these structures play a role in both male–male territorial signalling and female attraction.

Males compete for and defend suitable spawning cavities. A receptive female, recognisable by her broader, rounder body profile when gravid, is guided or coaxed to the male's selected site. Spawning takes place inside the cavity. Two males in close confinement typically engage in persistent territorial conflict; housing a single male with one or more females is the practical approach in captivity.

Breeding

Rineloricaria zaina, like all members of the genus for which reproduction is known, is expected to be a cavity spawner with paternal egg guarding. The male selects a sheltered cavity — in nature a crevice between rocks, a hollow stem, or undercut substrate; in captivity a clay tube, PVC pipe section, or narrow cave. Eggs are deposited adhesively on the cavity interior walls.

Following spawning, the male takes up position at or just inside the cavity entrance, fanning water continuously over the clutch with pectoral and caudal fin movements to maintain oxygen supply. He also removes dead or fungused eggs. Specific clutch size and incubation period for this species are not recorded in sources consulted. At temperatures typical of its subtropical range, incubation likely runs approximately five to eight days, tending toward the longer end at cooler water temperatures. Fry emerge already bearing the scute armour pattern of the adult and begin foraging on biofilm and fine particulate matter shortly after dispersal.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria zaina is not commonly encountered in the hobby trade; as a species described only in 2008 from a regional revision, it has had limited time to enter hobbyist circulation. When available, its relatively large size for the genus — approaching 5.5 in SL — should inform tank planning: a specimen of this length needs more space than the smaller, more frequently traded whiptails.

A tank of 20–25 US gal with good filtration and a moderate current suits a pair. Fine sand or smooth gravel substrate is ideal, allowing the fish to rest flush against the bottom as it does in nature. Driftwood, smooth stones, and a supply of algae-colonised surfaces add both enrichment and supplementary food. A snug-fitting cave or tube provides a spawning site and refuge.

Water conditions appropriate to the upper Uruguay basin — moderately cool subtropical temperatures (perhaps 68–79 °F), near-neutral pH, and moderate hardness — will suit this species better than the warmer parameters required by Amazonian loricariids. The species is peaceful in community settings and undemanding of tankmates, provided adequate hiding space and substrate area are available. Males should not be crowded together.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria zaina as Least Concern in November 2018, evaluated by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment noted a wide distribution across the upper Uruguay River drainage and identified no major threats at the time of evaluation.

The upper Uruguay basin of southern Brazil faces ongoing pressures from agricultural intensification — the region is a major centre of soy production and livestock farming — with associated impacts including sedimentation, riparian vegetation clearance, and nutrient runoff. Hydroelectric development on the Uruguay River and its tributaries has also modified flow regimes and connectivity in parts of the basin. While these pressures are real, R. zaina's broad distribution across multiple sub-basins of the upper Uruguay system provides some resilience. The species' LC status reflects the best current assessment, but periodic reassessment is warranted given the pace of land-use change in this region.
