One of the largest whiptail loricariids in the Magdalena drainage, Spatuloricaria curvispina stretches to 15.5 in and carries the genus's signature flat-bodied, elongate silhouette — a form so refined for life on the river bed that it scarcely reads as a catfish at first glance. Males and females can be told apart by head shape alone, making this Colombian river giant a genuine rarity among armoured catfishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Spatuloricaria curvispina was formally described by Georg Dahl in 1942 in Förhandlingar, Kungl. Fysiografiska sällskapet i Lund (volume 11, number 8, pages 85, figures 5–7). The type locality is Río Batatal, a tributary of the Río San Jorge within the Río Magdalena system, Bolívar Department, Colombia. The earlier combination Loricaria curvispina is now treated as a synonym; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid name as Spatuloricaria curvispina.

The genus Spatuloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the true whiptails — a group characterised by the extremely elongate, depressed body, the long caudal filament in many species, and the absence of an adipose fin. The genus name combines Latin spatula (a flat-bladed implement, alluding to the depressed body profile) with Latin lorica (a leather cuirass or body armour), the root shared by the family name Loricariidae.

Morphology

Adults reach 15.5 in standard length (SL), placing S. curvispina among the larger members of its genus. The body is extremely depressed — flattened dorso-ventrally — and covered in overlapping bony scutes typical of the family. The snout is spatulate, projecting well forward of the mouth, which is entirely ventral. A long caudal filament extends beyond the tail fork, adding to the overall elongate impression.

Sexual dimorphism in this species is pronounced and distinctive. When viewed from above, adult males show a head that approximates an isosceles triangle — longer and narrower — while females show a more equilateral triangle profile. Males are additionally more heavily built overall, and develop odontodal growth on the cheeks (interopercular odontodes) as well as shorter, thicker pectoral fin spines relative to females. These characters make sex determination straightforward in adults and are consistent with the dimorphic patterns seen across Spatuloricaria.

Habitat

Spatuloricaria curvispina is endemic to Colombia's Caribbean-draining river systems, with confirmed records from the Magdalena drainage — one of South America's major river systems, running north through the Andes foothills and lowland plains before emptying into the Caribbean Sea near Barranquilla. The type locality, Río Batatal in the Río San Jorge sub-basin, sits in lowland terrain in Bolívar Department.

The Magdalena and its tributaries carry warm, productive water. Loricariine whiptails in this region typically inhabit sandy and gravelly river beds in moderate current, where they rest pressed against the substrate and are effectively invisible against the sediment. No precise water chemistry data are available in the literature for this species specifically, but Magdalena lowland rivers are generally warm (75–82 °F), near-neutral to slightly alkaline, and moderately hard, reflecting the calcareous geology of the western Andes foothills they drain.

Feeding

Like other members of Loricariinae, S. curvispina is presumed to be a detritivore and biofilm grazer, rasping aufwuchs, algal films, and fine organic matter from hard and sandy substrates with its ventrally placed, modified mouth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.3 ± 0.2, consistent with a predominantly herbivorous and detritivorous feeding ecology.

In the aquarium, the species can be offered algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and sinking spirulina-based pellets. Providing a thin layer of fine sand encourages natural foraging behaviour as the fish sifts the substrate for fine particles. Protein-heavy foods are not typically required.

Mating

No breeding observations have been reported in the aquarium literature for S. curvispina, and field data on reproductive behaviour are absent. The marked sexual dimorphism — distinct head shape and odontode development in males — is consistent with male–male competition for access to females, a pattern seen in other large whiptail loricariids.

Males across the Loricariinae generally become territorial during the reproductive season, and the heavy odontode development on the cheeks of male S. curvispina suggests similar competitive dynamics. Beyond these morphological inferences, reproductive behaviour in this species remains undocumented.

Breeding

No captive breeding of S. curvispina has been documented in the hobby literature as of this writing. Given its large adult size (15.5 in SL), successful breeding would require a substantial aquarium and carefully managed conditioning. Loricariine whiptails in related genera typically deposit eggs on hard surfaces or in substrate depressions and exhibit some degree of paternal guarding, but whether S. curvispina follows this pattern has not been confirmed.

Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry development are entirely lacking. Aquarists holding adults at sufficient scale may wish to document any reproductive activity and contribute observations to the wider community database.

In the aquarium

Spatuloricaria curvispina is an uncommon species in the hobby, reflecting both its large adult size and its limited availability through the ornamental trade. At 15.5 in SL, this fish requires a spacious aquarium — a footprint of at least 150 × 23.5 in is a reasonable minimum for a single adult, and considerably more if tankmates are intended.

The aquarium should have a substrate of fine to medium sand, into which the fish can press itself and across which it can forage naturally. Strong filtration and good oxygenation are advisable, mimicking the well-flushed Magdalena tributaries where this species is found. Water temperature in the range of 75–82 °F, pH near neutral, and moderate hardness are appropriate based on the species' geographic origin.

The fish is unlikely to bother robust tankmates but should not be housed with small or delicate species that might be disturbed by its bulk. Other large, peaceful loricariids or larger characins from similar Colombian riverine habitats are reasonable choices. Décor should be kept open to allow the fish to move freely, with flat rock or driftwood providing resting surfaces.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Spatuloricaria curvispina as Data Deficient (DD) in 2014. This designation reflects a genuine gap in knowledge: there are insufficient data on population size, range extent, trends, and habitat requirements to determine whether the species is at risk. A Data Deficient listing is not equivalent to Least Concern — it means the assessment could not be completed, and the species may well be threatened once adequate survey work is undertaken.

The Magdalena basin faces severe and long-standing anthropogenic pressures. It is one of the most heavily modified major river systems in South America, with impacts including intensive gold and coal mining (and associated sedimentation and mercury contamination), agricultural runoff, deforestation across the watershed, damming for hydroelectric power, and urban effluent from several large Colombian cities. Loricariid whiptails are generally bottom-dwelling specialists with limited dispersal capacity, making them potentially vulnerable to localised habitat degradation. Field surveys targeting S. curvispina specifically are needed before any assessment of its actual conservation status can be made.
