Taxonomy & naming
Spatuloricaria fimbriata was described by Eigenmann and Vance in 1912, with type material collected from Boca de Certegai in Colombia. The original combination was Loricaria fimbriata; the species was subsequently placed in the genus Spatuloricaria Rojas-Mora & Bedoya-Sierra, which accommodates elongate, depressed loricariin catfishes with a spatulate snout. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Spatuloricaria fimbriata as the valid name, with Loricaria fimbriata Eigenmann & Vance, 1912 as its basionym.
The species appears in Ferraris's (2003) checklist of freshwater fishes of South and Central America as a valid taxon. It is the only Spatuloricaria recorded from as far north as Panama, and its presence in both the Tuira River drainage of Panama and the Magdalena and Atrato river basins of Colombia gives it an unusually wide latitudinal range for the genus.
Morphology
As members of subfamily Loricariinae, Spatuloricaria species display the classic whiptail body plan: strongly depressed and elongated, with a distinctive spatulate or paddle-shaped snout overhanging the ventrally placed suckermouth. The body is fully encased in bony scutes arranged in lateral series, and the caudal fin typically terminates in a filamentous extension in mature specimens.
S. fimbriata is notably small for the genus, with a recorded maximum length of 3.5 in SL — well below the 8–12 in reached by many of its congeners. No published morphometric breakdown specific to this species is available beyond its size and basic placement in the family. The specific epithet fimbriata (from Latin fimbriatus, fringed) likely alludes to fringed or fimbriate features of the snout or margin structures, as is common in loricariin nomenclature, though the original description's full diagnostic details have not been widely reprinted in the modern literature.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Magdalena River basin and Atrato River basin in Colombia, as well as the Tuira River drainage of Panama. The IUCN assessment (Perez 2023) lists its habitat as permanent rivers and streams within freshwater inland wetlands; whether it also occurs in the Cauca River basin of Colombia remains unconfirmed. Nothing is published on microhabitat preferences, substrate requirements, water depth, or the physicochemical conditions of its known collection sites. As a member of Loricariinae, it is reasonable to infer a benthic, current-associated lifestyle typical of whiptail catfishes — resting on sandy or rocky substrates in moderate flow — but this is general family-level inference, not documented field data for this species.
Feeding
FishBase assigns S. fimbriata a trophic level of 2.6, consistent with a herbivore-detritivore feeding guild. This is the standard loricariid category for species that graze algae, periphyton, and fine detrital material from submerged surfaces — a common feeding mode among loricariin whiptails in general. No specific dietary study of this species has been published, and its gut contents or feeding behaviour have not been described in the available literature.
Mating
No mating behaviour, courtship, or reproductive seasonality has been documented for S. fimbriata. The IUCN assessment notes that natural history information is essentially absent for this species. Within the broader Loricariinae, males of many species develop elongated caudal filaments and exhibit territory-based mate attraction near suitable spawning sites, but whether these patterns apply to this species is unknown.
Breeding
Reproductive biology of S. fimbriata is undescribed. No captive breeding reports are known, consistent with the species being absent from the ornamental trade. Loricariins generally deposit adhesive eggs on substrate surfaces or in sheltered crevices, with varying degrees of male parental care in different genera, but no information specific to Spatuloricaria fimbriata is available.

Spatuloricaria fimbriata is not known to be in the aquarium hobby. The IUCN (2023) records no commercial use, and PlanetCatfish carries no Cat-eLog entry for this species. No aquarium husbandry data — water parameters, feeding preferences, tank requirements, or compatibility notes — are available. Its diminutive size (under 3.5 in SL) relative to most Spatuloricaria is unusual and might make it more manageable in smaller aquaria than its congeners, but this is speculative without any keeper experience on record.
