The longest-established member of its genus and the original template for the whiptail body plan, Sturisoma rostratum is an elegant, arrow-slim catfish from the central Brazilian river systems. Named for its remarkably elongated snout, it has anchored the genus Sturisoma since 1829 — a name that now spans dozens of species, yet circles back to this single Amazon-basin whiptail as its nominal type.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisoma rostratum was formally described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in their landmark 1829 work Selecta Genera et Species Piscium Brasiliam, based on specimens collected in Brazil. The original combination was Loricaria rostrata; the species was subsequently transferred to the genus Sturisoma Swainson, 1838, making it the nominal type species of that genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Sturisoma rostratum (Spix & Agassiz, 1829).

The genus Sturisoma belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the most species-rich of the five loricariid subfamilies and the group containing the true whiptail catfishes. A comprehensive taxonomic revision by Londoño-Burbano and colleagues (2024, Journal of Fish Biology) confirmed hidden diversity within Sturisoma and resolved several species boundaries, while maintaining rostratum as the valid nominal species at the genus root.

In the ornamental trade the name 'royal whiptail' and 'giant whiptail' circulate broadly across Sturisoma and its close relatives, and specimens are rarely distinguished to species level at point of sale — a persistent challenge for anyone attempting to pinpoint the true S. rostratum in aquarium literature.

Morphology

Like all members of the subfamily Loricariinae, Sturisoma rostratum is dramatically dorsoventrally flattened — a body plan shaped by millions of years of clinging to current-scoured surfaces. The profile in lateral view is a long, tapered wedge: widest across the pectoral girdle, then narrowing steadily through a greatly elongated caudal peduncle to a long, filamentous caudal extension. Adults reach approximately 7.5 in total length (TL).

The most immediately diagnostic feature is the snout: unusually long and narrow even within the genus, projecting well ahead of the mouth and giving the fish its species epithet. The mouth is positioned ventrally and equipped with fine, bicuspid teeth arranged in short, comb-like rows — suited to scraping biofilm from flat surfaces rather than excavating hard substrate. The body is armoured with keeled bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows; the lateral keel is particularly pronounced, giving a serrated ridge effect along the upper flank.

Ground colour is typically warm brown to tan, overlaid with a pattern of darker brown blotches or an irregular reticulation. A pale stripe often runs along the dorsal ridge. The fins are proportionally large and held erect, the pectorals in particular functioning like stabilising wings in flowing water.

Sexual dimorphism follows the loricariid norm: breeding males develop stiff interopercular odontodes (bristle-like spines on the cheek margin) that become conspicuous in conditioning fish, and the pectoral spines accumulate odontodes along their dorsal surface. Females are visibly wider across the body when gravid.

Habitat

Sturisoma rostratum is a river fish of the central and lower Amazon basin in Brazil. Confirmed drainage records include the Araguaia, Maranhão, Mearim, Tapajós, and Tocantins Rivers and their tributaries — a broad distribution across the great river systems of central Brazil that drain northward and eastward into the lower Amazon and the Atlantic coast.

The species is classified as demersal and freshwater; the genus is characterised as a facultative air-breather, supplementing gill respiration with intestinal air-breathing during periods of reduced dissolved oxygen such as the low-water season. No precise temperature or pH data are recorded for the natural collection sites, but the central Brazilian rivers occupied by this species are generally warm tropical waters with seasonal fluctuation in depth, current velocity, and turbidity driven by the dry and wet seasons.

Microhabitat is presumed to be consistent with the broader Loricariinae pattern: flat-surfaced substrates such as large rocks, submerged logs, and root mats in areas of moderate to strong current, where the dorsoventral flattening and powerful pectoral fins allow adhesion against flow.

Feeding

Sturisoma rostratum feeds as a biofilm and algae scraper, using its fine-toothed ventrally placed mouth to rasp the thin layer of periphyton — bacteria, diatoms, green algae, detritus, and associated microinvertebrates — from flat, current-swept surfaces. This feeding mode is characteristic of the Loricariinae and contrasts with the wood-eating habit of the Hypostominae xylophages.

In aquaria, established specimens readily graze algae from glass, rocks, and broad-leaved plants. Supplementary feeding should reflect the natural diet: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) or cucumber, and occasional offerings of sinking pellets with a high vegetable content. Live or frozen foods such as bloodworm may be accepted but are not a dietary priority. Consistent grazing opportunities on a lightly algae-covered surface are preferable to infrequent heavy feeding sessions.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Sturisoma broadly follows the pattern documented for related species such as S. panamense and S. aureum, which have been bred in captivity more frequently than S. rostratum itself. Males become territorially active as conditioning proceeds, displaying interopercular odontodes and defending flat spawning surfaces — typically a broad, smooth rock face, the aquarium glass, or a section of slate — from rival males.

Conditioned females are noticeably broader-bodied than males when viewed from above, and the difference becomes pronounced as eggs ripen. Courtship involves the male pressing alongside the female and manoeuvring her toward the selected spawning surface. The pair may remain in close proximity for several hours before eggs are deposited.

Breeding

Sturisoma species are flat-surface spawners: eggs are deposited openly on a vertical or near-vertical hard surface — glass, smooth rock, or a broad flat stone — rather than in a concealed cave. This distinguishes them clearly from the cave-spawning Hypostominae. The male fertilises the clutch and then assumes sole parental responsibility, fanning the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any eggs that develop fungus.

Egg development in related congeners typically spans five to seven days at tropical temperatures, with the male fanning through the entire period. Newly hatched fry are lecithotrophic for the first few days, consuming their yolk sacs while remaining near the spawn site under the male's loose supervision. Once the yolk is absorbed, fry begin foraging on microalgae and fine particulate matter.

S. rostratum itself has a limited captive breeding record, and direct aquarium reports for this species are sparse; the rearing biology described above is inferred from the better-documented congeners and should be treated as provisional.

In the aquarium

With adults reaching approximately 7.5 in TL, Sturisoma rostratum requires a moderately sized aquarium — a footprint of at least 100 × 15.5 in is advisable for a single adult, with larger dimensions needed if multiple specimens or active tankmates are kept. Tall or cube-format tanks are less suitable than those with generous horizontal swimming and grazing area.

Water quality should be clean and well-oxygenated; strong filtration and a moderate current are beneficial, mimicking the riverine origin. Because no precise wild water chemistry records are available for this species, the general parameters appropriate for central Brazilian river fish are a reasonable starting point: temperature approximately 75–82 °F, near-neutral to slightly acid pH, and soft to moderately hard water. Weekly partial water changes are important to keep nitrate accumulation in check.

Decoration should include flat, smooth surfaces — large smooth river stones, broad slate pieces, and sections of driftwood — on which the fish can graze and rest. The flattened body and powerful pectoral fins are adapted to clinging to current-swept surfaces, and fish kept without suitable flat substrate tend to be restless. The species is not known to be aggressive toward dissimilar tankmates and is generally compatible with similarly sized, peaceful fish.

S. rostratum is seldom traded explicitly under its name; fish sold as 'royal whiptail' or 'giant whiptail' in the hobby may represent any of several Sturisoma species, and confident species identification at the point of sale is unusual.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisoma rostratum as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The species has a broad distribution across multiple large river systems in central and lower Amazonian Brazil — the Araguaia, Tapajós, Tocantins, Maranhão, and Mearim drainages — and no evidence of major range-wide decline was identified at the time of assessment.

The central Brazilian river systems are subject to ongoing pressures including hydroelectric dam construction, siltation from agricultural expansion, and deforestation in riparian zones. The Tocantins basin in particular hosts several large dam complexes. Whether these pressures have measurably affected S. rostratum populations specifically is not well documented, and the species' biology and population structure remain understudied. Its status as the type species of a genus under active taxonomic revision means that future reassessments may benefit from clarified species boundaries and more systematic survey data.
