Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus variolus was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1872 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 23, p. 288), under the combination Chaetostomus variolus, from specimens collected in the Río Ampiyacu (spelled Ambyiacu in the original), Peru. The name subsequently appeared as Chaetostomus aculeatus variolus before Isbrücker (1980, p. 74) transferred it to the genus Ancistrus, creating the current combination.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Ancistrus variolus as a valid species, and Fisch-Muller (2003) includes it in the SAFCA checklist. However, both FishBase and Fisch-Muller note explicitly that 'the validity of this species, based on juvenile specimens actually in bad condition, needs confirmation.' The type material — juvenile fish in a degraded state — makes confident morphological diagnosis difficult, and the species has rarely if ever been collected since the original description. It should be regarded as a valid name provisionally, pending re-examination of the type series or the collection of fresh topotypic material.
No L-number has been assigned. No common name is recorded in any of the standard hobby references.
Morphology
Published size data for A. variolus are limited to a maximum of 2 in standard length (SL) — about 2 in, or 1.9 inches — recorded in Fisch-Muller (2003) and repeated on FishBase. This figure almost certainly reflects the juvenile type specimens rather than an adult maximum, and the true adult size is unknown.
Beyond size, specific morphological descriptions based on fresh or well-preserved material are not available in the sources to hand. As an Ancistrus, the species would be expected to bear the characteristic loricariid scute armour, a ventral sucker-mouth, and — in mature males — the branched fleshy tentacles on the snout that define the genus. Whether adult males were ever documented for this species is unclear given that the type specimens are juveniles.

Habitat
The type locality is the Río Ampiyacu, a tributary of the Amazon in the Loreto region of northern Peru, draining into the main Amazon stem near Pebas. The Ampiyacu is a blackwater river system characteristic of the western Amazon lowlands, typically with soft, acidic water, low conductivity, and warm temperatures in the range expected for lowland Peruvian rivers.
Beyond the type locality, no confirmed distribution data for A. variolus are available, and the species appears not to have been reliably collected since Cope's original material. The Amazon basin drainage context is consistent with the broader Ancistrus distribution in Amazonia, but specific microhabitat information — substrate preference, water depth, current regime — is entirely undocumented.
Feeding
No feeding observations for Ancistrus variolus in the wild are recorded. Based on genus membership and the broader ecology of Amazonian Ancistrus, the species would be expected to be a herbivore and biofilm grazer, scraping algae, periphyton, and detritus from hard substrates with the ventral mouthparts typical of the group.

General Ancistrus husbandry principles would be the starting point for any keeper who encountered confirmed specimens: clean, warm to moderately warm Amazonian-type water (soft and acidic to neutral, 75–82 °F), algae-based diet, cave provision, and adequate space for the adult size — which remains unknown.

Ancistrus variolus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 23 April 2014). This reflects the near-complete absence of information: the species is known from a small number of poorly preserved juvenile specimens collected in the nineteenth century, and it has not been reliably recorded since. Whether it represents a genuine, currently extant taxon distinct from other Ampiyacu Ancistrus cannot be determined from the available material.
No population estimates, range maps, or threat assessments are possible in the absence of current data. The Ampiyacu drainage, while remote, faces pressures from deforestation and agricultural expansion in the Loreto region, but the impact on this species specifically cannot be evaluated.
