Taxonomy & naming
Sturisomatichthys leightoni was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912 in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (part 3, article 36, page 669, Plate 77, figure 2), under the original combination Oxyloricaria leightoni, from specimens collected at Honda, Colombia, at an elevation of 300–400 feet (approximately 295–394 ft). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Sturisomatichthys leightoni (Regan, 1912), with Oxyloricaria leightoni treated as the original synonym — hence the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus.
The species epithet honours Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Bryan Baldwin Mawddwy Leighton, 9th Baronet, who was associated with collections used by Regan. The genus Sturisomatichthys was erected to accommodate a group of trans-Andean whiptail loricariids closely related to — and historically confused with — the cis-Andean genus Sturisoma. The two genera are separated by the arrangement of central abdominal plates (in three defined longitudinal series in Sturisoma; less organized in Sturisomatichthys), fin coloration (dark spots usually present on at least one unpaired fin in Sturisomatichthys but absent in Sturisoma), and lateral plate count (15–18 in Sturisomatichthys vs 20–21 in Sturisoma). Sturisomatichthys leightoni is placed within subfamily Loricariinae (Ferraris, 2003), the whiptail-dominated subfamily that includes Farlowella, Sturisoma, and Loricaria.
Morphology
Sturisomatichthys leightoni reaches approximately 7 in SL (standard length), making it a small to medium whiptail — around 7 in body length, with elongated caudal filaments in mature specimens that can add several centimetres to total length. The body is extremely slender and tapering — almost cylindrical in cross-section at the mid-body — with the characteristic loricariid armour of bony plates, but arranged more elegantly than in the broad-bodied Hypostomus or Pterygoplichthys lineages.
The head is elongated with a relatively short snout compared to the larger Sturisoma species (PlanetCatfish identification notes), and the rostral tip does not project dramatically as in some Farlowella. Ground colour is russet to tan-brown, with a dark lateral stripe running from the snout tip along the lateral series of plates, a pattern reminiscent of the 'Royal Farlowella' (Sturisoma panamense). Dark spots are present on the dorsal fin and typically on the pectoral and pelvic fins — these spots are one of the consistent characters separating Sturisomatichthys from Sturisoma (PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog, Tuarley 2002).
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and visible at moderate size. Males develop prominent tufts of interopercular odontodes — stiff, bristle-like spines — on either side of the head, giving the impression of cheek 'whiskers'. Gravid females are distinctly broader-bodied when viewed from above or from the front, and the papilla is rounded and swollen compared to the smaller, tubular papilla of males.
Habitat
Sturisomatichthys leightoni is native to the upper Magdalena and Cauca river basins of Colombia, both of which drain westward from the Andes into the Caribbean via the Magdalena River. The type locality is Honda, in the department of Tolima, on the upper Magdalena at approximately 300–400 feet (295–394 ft) elevation. PlanetCatfish records it from the Magdalena, Upper Magdalena, and Cauca drainage areas.
The FishBase temperature record — 68–75 °F — is among the cooler ranges cited for any Colombian loricariid, consistent with the Andean-piedmont nature of the upper Magdalena system. Paul Turley's detailed breeding account (PlanetCatfish Shane's World, 2002, originally published in Aqua News, 1998) describes the fish as inhabiting 'cool (68–75 °F) fast flowing rivers in Colombia' with high dissolved oxygen content, consistent with the montane origin. The preference for spawn sites directly in front of powerhead or filter outflows in captivity reinforces the association with well-oxygenated, flowing water.
As trans-Andean fish, S. leightoni and its congeners occupy the Pacific-slope and Caribbean-slope drainages of western Colombia and adjacent regions, while Sturisoma species are predominantly cis-Andean (Amazon/Orinoco drainages).
Feeding
Sturisomatichthys leightoni is a grazer on biofilm and algae, supplemented by vegetable matter and small invertebrates. In the wild it forages across rock and wood surfaces in fast-flowing rivers, scraping the periphyton layer with its ventral sucker mouth. The fine, pointed teeth of Loricariinae genera are adapted to scraping hard surfaces rather than gouging wood or processing large food particles.
In aquaria, a diet of algae wafers and spirulina discs forms the dietary base. Blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, and spinach — are eagerly accepted and provide fibre, vitamins, and the variety necessary for long-term health. Turley (2002) fed Wardley's algae discs and blanched zucchini as staples, supplemented by flake food, shrimp pellets, and baby brine shrimp. The species is not an aggressive feeder and should not be kept with boisterous fish that will out-compete it at feeding time. Soft-leaved plants are generally safe with this species in a community aquarium; Turley raised spawns in a tank with Water Sprite and Giant Vallisneria with no apparent plant damage.
Mating
Sturisomatichthys leightoni is a stimulating fish to observe during breeding activity. Males become territorial over prime spawning surfaces and compete vigorously — head-to-head sparring with interopercular odontode tufts deployed, and the characteristic 'tail slap' of loricariid courtship and aggression (Turley, 2002). Unlike cave-spawning plecos, males do not need to defend a burrow; instead they defend a patch of the aquarium glass or a smooth vertical surface such as a broad leaf or slate.
Ripe females are noticeably swollen when viewed from above. The male will coax a receptive female to the chosen spawning site. Turley documented a harem-type system in which one male spawned sequentially with three females over a four-day period, accumulating over 200 eggs at a single guarded site — apparently among the first documented cases of sequential paternal harem spawning in loricariids. This means that in a group of three males and four females the dominant male may accumulate a very large clutch across multiple spawnings, while rival males attempt to displace him.
Breeding
Sturisomatichthys leightoni spawns openly on vertical surfaces — typically directly on the aquarium glass, in the outflow current of a filter or powerhead, which ensures high oxygen delivery to the developing eggs. Females deposit 40–80 adhesive eggs per spawning; multiple females may spawn at the same site over several days, giving effective clutch sizes of 100–200+ eggs under the care of one male (Turley, 2002).
Eggs are relatively large and hatch rapidly at ~72 °F — approximately five days post-spawning, considerably faster than the 10–12 day incubation typical of the related genus Sturisoma. Fry emerge as miniature versions of adults, already showing the lateral stripe pattern. The male fans and guards the clutch continuously until hatching; in a species tank, eggs can be left to hatch and fry raised with parents. In community tanks the eggs are vulnerable to other fish and should be moved to a raising tank.
Raising the fry requires a specific technique: the fry are reluctant to move toward food and will starve if food is not delivered to them. Paul Overn's method — widely adopted in the hobby — involves alternating between a sponge filter and a strong air diffuser to circulate powdered food (APR, crushed flake, spirulina powder) through the water column past the stationary fry. Fed in this way, fry grow rapidly in the first weeks and reach breedable size (about 3–4 in) at roughly one year of age (Turley, 2002). Two captive breeding reports are on file at PlanetCatfish.
In the aquarium
Sturisomatichthys leightoni is, by consensus, a genuinely rewarding aquarium fish for experienced hobbyists. Its maximum size of around 7 in SL makes it manageable in tanks from 20–25 US gal upward for a pair; a breeding group of three to five individuals is comfortable in 40–55 US gal with adequate current and surface area. The combination of small size, elegant appearance, active breeding behaviour, and non-destructive diet makes it well-suited to planted aquaria — a distinction from many plecos that damage or uproot fine-leaved plants.
Water parameters should reflect the cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated montane origin: temperature 68–75 °F (do not let the tank exceed 79 °F for extended periods), pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness, and — critically — strong filtration and surface agitation to maintain dissolved oxygen. The species is intolerant of warm, stagnant, oxygen-poor conditions. Water changes of 25–30% weekly help maintain quality.
Drifwood is appreciated for grazing but not required. The fish will graze algae from glass and rocks. Flat, smooth vertical surfaces — a bare patch of back glass, a large piece of slate — are preferred spawning sites and should be available in any breeding setup. S. leightoni is broadly peaceful with non-predatory tankmates; compatible with small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and most similarly sized peaceful fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisomatichthys leightoni as Least Concern in 2014, citing its presence across both the upper Magdalena and Cauca basins of Colombia and no documented population-level threats at the time of assessment. The species appears resilient within its range and is collected for the ornamental trade, though it is not a common import.
The upper Magdalena and Cauca drainages are among the most heavily impacted river systems in South America: agricultural runoff (particularly from coffee cultivation and cattle ranching), sedimentation from deforestation, hydroelectric development, and water abstraction all affect water quality and flow regimes in the piedmont zone where S. leightoni is most abundant. The 2014 assessment pre-dates the most recent decade of accelerated hydroelectric development in the Colombian Andes. A reassessment accounting for current habitat trends could be warranted. Captive breeding is established in the hobby, meaning the ornamental trade does not depend entirely on wild-caught specimens.
