Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus tolima was formally described by Taphorn, Armbruster, Villa-Navarro and Ray in 2013 in Zootaxa (volume 3641, number 4, pages 343–370, figures 10–11), as part of a revision of trans-Andean Ancistrus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Ancistrus tolima with no currently listed synonyms. No other combination has been applied.
The genus Ancistrus belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae, one of the major subfamilial groupings of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). Ancistrini is defined in part by evertible cheek plates bearing odontodes. Within Ancistrus, the presence of branched snout tentacles in breeding males is the clearest diagnostic trait for the genus as a whole; the precise branching pattern and the combination of fin-ray counts and squamation help delimit species.
The type locality is Quebrada El Pescado (3.599306°N, 74.854556°W), vereda San Pablo, municipio de Dolores, departamento de Tolima, Colombia, in the Pardo River sub-basin of the upper Magdalena River drainage. The species is known from no other locality.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL — a modest size even by Ancistrus standards, consistent with the species belonging to a highland, probably resource-limited stream environment. The body follows the standard loricariid armour plan: rows of keeled bony plates covering the trunk and tail, with the abdomen partially or fully covered depending on individual age.
As in other Ancistrus, mature males develop elaborate fleshy tentacles projecting from the snout and interopercular region. These tentacles are branched, giving the snout a bushy, antler-like appearance in well-developed males. Females and juveniles lack or bear only rudimentary tentacle development. Beyond these sexual characters, detailed meristic data from the original description (dorsal fin with one spine and eight soft rays; anal fin with one spine and five soft rays) define the species in combination with squamation pattern and tooth counts.
Live coloration data is sparse given how few individuals have ever been examined; published figures show a typical dark-bodied Ancistrus with lighter markings, though full colour documentation in living fish is limited.
Habitat
Every known specimen of Ancistrus tolima has been collected from Quebrada El Pescado, a single highland creek in the Department of Tolima, Colombia, at an elevation of approximately 1,100–1,300 metres above sea level. This creek drains into the Pardo River, itself a tributary of the upper Magdalena system — one of South America's great trans-Andean drainages.
The creek habitat is described as having a sand and gravel substrate with abundant organic material accumulation and steep banks with limited shoreline vegetation — a shaded, relatively fast-flowing stream typical of mid-elevation Andean drainages. The subpopulation is isolated above a dam that cuts off any connection to downstream reaches or adjacent subpopulations.
Seasonal variability is extreme and ecologically critical. During El Niño drought events, water quantity in the creek has been documented to fall to roughly 20% of normal levels, rendering an already tiny habitat even more precarious. Water chemistry data for the creek are not published in the available literature.
Feeding
No feeding ecology studies have been published specifically for Ancistrus tolima. Inference from the broader genus and from the loricariid literature indicates that Ancistrus species are predominantly algivores and biofilm grazers, rasping periphyton, epilithic algae, diatoms, and the associated organic detritus from rock and wood surfaces using their strongly modified, multicusped teeth.
The highland stream habitat — with its cobble and gravel substrate, high light penetration on steep banks, and moderate current maintaining oxygenated water over rock surfaces — is broadly consistent with this feeding mode. In similar stream environments, Andean loricariids typically consume significant amounts of fine organic particulate matter in addition to algae.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship behaviour have been recorded for Ancistrus tolima in the wild or in captivity — the species has essentially never been maintained in the aquarium hobby, and field study has been limited to brief collection events. What is known derives from the general biology of Ancistrus and closely related Ancistrini.
Male Ancistrus are territorial around cavity sites — crevices under rocks, root tangles, or any suitable hollow — and the elaborate branched snout tentacles of mature males are understood to play a role in male-to-male signalling and possibly female assessment. Males select and prepare a nest site, and females visit to deposit eggs after a period of courtship. Given the extreme rarity and single-site restriction of A. tolima, no documentation of specific mating behaviour exists.
Breeding
Ancistrus is broadly characterised as a genus of cave-spawning, paternally guarding plecos. Males select a sheltered cavity, females deposit adhesive eggs on the inner surfaces, and the male remains with the brood — fanning eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain water circulation, and removing infertile or fungused eggs — until the fry are free-swimming and have begun to forage independently.
No breeding records for Ancistrus tolima in captivity are known. The species appears never to have entered the aquarium trade in meaningful numbers, and given the IUCN assessment that fewer than eighteen individuals have ever been collected in total, captive breeding has not been attempted in any documented context. Clutch size, incubation period, and fry development remain undocumented for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus tolima does not appear in the aquarium trade and is not available to hobbyists. Its collection requires scientific permits in Colombia, and its extreme rarity — known from a single creek with a handful of known individuals — makes any collection for the ornamental trade both ecologically irresponsible and, given its Endangered status, almost certainly prohibited.
The species is presented here for its scientific and conservation significance rather than as a species available for aquarium keeping. Hobbyists interested in Andean Ancistrus should note that other Colombian highland Ancistrus species have occasionally appeared in specialist trade, and that the genus as a whole includes numerous hardy, well-documented aquarium subjects at no conservation risk.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus tolima as Endangered under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) in 2014 (published 2016; assessors: Villa-Navarro, F., Mesa-Salazar, L., Lasso, C. & Sanchez-Duarte, P.; reviewers: Tognelli, M. & Reis, R.). The assessment notes it may require updating.
The situation is grave by almost any measure. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is approximately 99 mi² and the area of occupancy (AOO) is approximately 6 mi² — both well within the thresholds for Critically Endangered, let alone Endangered. Only a single location is recognised. The total number of individuals ever scientifically collected is approximately eighteen — not eighteen per visit, but eighteen across all collecting events ever conducted. The species appears genuinely rare even within its one known site.
The single known population is genetically isolated above a dam that prevents any colonisation from or dispersal to adjacent drainages. Primary threats are agrochemical pollution from subsistence farming in the watershed and progressive habitat degradation of the riparian zone. Climate change compounds these pressures: El Niño drought events reduce water flow in the creek to roughly 20% of normal, periodically compressing an already tiny habitat to a fraction of its limited extent.
No specific conservation measures are known to be in place for this species. The IUCN annotation indicates the assessment needs updating; given the passage of time since 2014 and the identified threats, renewed field surveys to establish current population status are urgently needed.
