Colomesus tocantinensis is a small freshwater pufferfish endemic to the Tocantins River drainage of central Brazil — one of only three recognized species in Colomesus, the sole South American pufferfish genus. Described formally in 2013, it remains little collected and poorly known in both science and the aquarium hobby, its biology inferred largely from its congeners. Like its close relative the Amazon puffer (C. asellus), it is a durophagous freshwater fish whose perpetually growing beak is built for crushing molluscs, and it carries the family hallmarks — tetrodotoxin, the capacity to inflate, and an absence of true scales — that make pufferfish among the most instantly recognizable of freshwater fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Colomesus tocantinensis was formally described in 2013 by Amaral, Brito, Silva & Carvalho. It belongs to the family Tetraodontidae, the pufferfishes, and is one of three currently recognized species in Colomesus — the only genus of pufferfish native to South America. The other two are C. asellus (Müller & Troschel, 1849), the widespread Amazon puffer of Amazonian whitewater and the flooded forest, and C. psittacus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), a brackish to estuarine species of the Atlantic coast.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) governs valid names for this group. Within Tetraodontidae, the former catch-all genus Tetraodon has been comprehensively revised: it is now restricted to African species, while Asian puffers are distributed across Dichotomyctere (the brackish green-spotted and figure-eight puffers), Pao (Mekong river puffers), Leiodon, Carinotetraodon (dwarf puffers) and Auriglobus (golden puffers, formerly Chonerhinos). Colomesus is entirely separate — a South American lineage with no phylogenetic relationship to those Asian genera beyond their shared family.

No synonyms or old Tetraodon combinations for this species are on record, reflecting its description under the correct genus from the outset. The epithet tocantinensis is a straightforward Latinised toponym referring to the Tocantins River, the drainage from which the species is known.

Morphology

Data on C. tocantinensis specifically are sparse, and the following draws on the Colomesus body plan together with the original description characters that distinguish it from its congeners. Like all Colomesus, it is a compact, rounded fish with the characteristic tetraodontid profile: a blunt snout, large eyes set well back from the mouth, a plump belly, and a small, rounded caudal fin. The body is scaleless — puffers are one of the few fish groups that have lost their scales entirely, instead bearing either naked skin or, in some genera, small prickles that erect when the fish inflates.

The four fused teeth that give the family its common name form a prominent beak, divided into upper and lower pairs by a central suture. This beak is a durophage's tool, capable of crushing snail shells and small crustacean exoskeletons, and it grows continuously throughout the fish's life. Adults reportedly reach approximately 3–4 in in standard length, placing C. tocantinensis in the small-to-medium range for the genus. Coloration in Colomesus typically involves a pale yellowish or cream underside and a darker, patterned dorsal surface with blotching or banding — exact coloration for this species has not been fully documented in the accessible literature.

As in all tetraodontids, pufferfish of this genus lack a pelvis and pelvic fins, have no true gill covers (instead a small gill opening), and possess a distensible stomach that allows rapid inflation with water when threatened.

Habitat

Colomesus tocantinensis is endemic to the Tocantins River drainage of central Brazil. The Tocantins is one of the major river systems of eastern Amazonia, rising in the Brazilian Cerrado highlands of Goiás and flowing north to the Atlantic via the Pará estuary — but it is hydrologically distinct from the Amazon basin proper, draining the Cerrado rather than the Andean-fed western Amazon. Its waters are generally clear to slightly turbid, with a moderate current in the main channel and seasonally flooded marginal areas.

Cache data indicate the species occupies river channels and associated floodplain areas. Reported water parameters for the drainage sit in the tropical range, approximately 75–82 °F, with neutral to slightly acidic pH consistent with the soft, relatively mineral-poor waters of the Brazilian interior plateau. Like C. asellus in the Amazon, this species is presumed to exploit the flooded forest margins seasonally, following the wet season expansion of available habitat. It is a freshwater species; the brackish estuarine character of C. psittacus does not apply here.

Because C. tocantinensis is rarely collected and sparsely documented, precise habitat preferences within the Tocantins drainage — depth, substrate, vegetation association — have not been detailed in the accessible literature.

Feeding

Colomesus tocantinensis is inferred to be a durophage — a mollusc and hard-prey crusher — following the feeding ecology established for the genus. The Amazon puffer C. asellus is well documented as a snail-crusher, using its beak to process the shells of freshwater gastropods, small bivalves and crustaceans. Given the structural identity of the beak apparatus across Colomesus, C. tocantinensis almost certainly shares this dietary strategy.

In practice, pufferfish of this group are opportunistic: snails form the dietary core, but small crustaceans, shrimp, and other invertebrates are taken when available. The beak's continuous growth is a direct adaptation to this abrasive diet — grinding hard shells wears the enamel, and the only way to keep the dentition functional over a lifetime is for it to grow perpetually. A fish that does not receive adequate hard-shelled prey will develop an overgrown beak that prevents it from feeding.

No published stomach-content analysis for C. tocantinensis is known to the authors; the above is inferred from congener biology and the species' morphology.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Colomesus tocantinensis has not been documented. What is known of Colomesus mating biology comes primarily from C. asellus in the Amazon system, where spawning is associated with the annual flood pulse — fish dispersing into newly inundated marginal vegetation as water levels rise with the wet season, a pattern typical of many Amazonian freshwater fishes that use flooded forest as spawning and nursery habitat.

Based on congener behaviour and the family pattern, courtship in Colomesus is likely driven by the male pursuing the female through open water or around cover, with spawning taking place over or among substrate rather than at a constructed nest. There is no evidence of bubble-nest building or mouthbrooding anywhere in the family Tetraodontidae. For C. tocantinensis specifically, nothing further can be stated with confidence; the species' rarity in collections means it has not been bred or closely observed even in research settings.

Breeding

Breeding in C. tocantinensis has not been documented in either the wild or captivity. Based on the pattern across Colomesus — particularly observations of C. asellus — the species is expected to be an open or substrate spawner that deposits eggs over the bottom or among vegetation without constructing a nest, with no recorded parental care by either sex.

The Amazon puffer is understood to broadcast or scatter eggs in seasonally flooded areas, after which neither parent guards the clutch. Whether C. tocantinensis follows an identical pattern, or whether the different hydrology of the Tocantins drainage (which has a distinct seasonal flood regime) results in any variation in spawning timing or site selection, is not known. No captive breeding accounts have been published. Given how rarely the species appears in the trade or in research collections, breeding data will likely remain sparse for some time.

In the aquarium

Colomesus tocantinensis is extremely rare in the aquarium hobby. It is almost never imported, and hobbyist accounts are essentially nonexistent. The following draws on the husbandry established for its congener C. asellus, which it closely resembles in morphology and ecology, and on the universal pufferfish care requirements that apply to the genus.

The single most critical point of puffer husbandry is the beak. The four fused teeth form a continuously growing structure that must be worn down through regular access to hard-shelled prey — live snails (ramshorns, bladder snails), small shellfish, and hard-shelled crustaceans. A puffer denied hard food will develop an overgrown beak within months; once overgrown, the fish cannot feed and the beak must be trimmed under sedation. Snails are not a treat but a dietary staple. The Amazon puffer (C. asellus) is reported to be comparatively sociable among Colomesus and may be kept in small groups; whether C. tocantinensis is similarly tolerant is unknown, though the small-aquarium approach of a species-only or very carefully chosen community tank is advisable until the fish's temperament is established. As a fully freshwater, soft-water species, no salt or brackish conditions are required or appropriate.

Pufferfish are scaleless and lack true gill covers, making them sensitive to many medications. Copper-based treatments must never be used; all medications should be dosed conservatively and monitored carefully. This species should never be lifted from the water into air — if alarmed it inflates with water, and inflation in air can be dangerous to the fish. Strong biological filtration and regular large water changes are essential given the heavy waste load this genus produces. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, maintained at 75–82 °F, replicating the warm, moderately soft conditions of the Tocantins interior drainage. Tetrodotoxin is present in the skin and internal organs of all tetraodontids, including Colomesus; standard aquarium handling (nets, hands rinsed after contact) is safe, but the fish must not be kept with animals that might injure or bite them, and they are not fit for human consumption.

Conservation

Colomesus tocantinensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its known range is restricted to the Tocantins River drainage — a geographically defined endemic with limited natural distribution. Endemic species with restricted ranges are inherently more vulnerable to basin-wide threats than widely distributed fishes, even when those threats are diffuse.

The Tocantins drainage faces significant human pressure. The river has been heavily developed for hydroelectric power, most notably by the Tucuruí Dam — one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world — which fundamentally altered the hydrology of the lower and middle basin, flooding vast areas of floodplain and disrupting the flood-pulse ecology that freshwater fish in seasonally dynamic systems depend upon. Additional dams and water infrastructure projects in the Tocantins–Araguaia system continue to threaten habitat connectivity. Agriculture-driven land clearance in the Cerrado headwaters further reduces the quality and quantity of intact riparian habitat.

Because C. tocantinensis is little collected and poorly known, the actual impact of these pressures on its populations is undocumented. A formal IUCN assessment, including range surveys and population data, would be a valuable contribution to understanding the conservation status of this narrowly endemic pufferfish.
