Paratrygon orinocensis, the Orinoco discus ray, is a large, disc-shaped freshwater stingray described in 2021 from the mid and lower Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. It is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one — an elasmobranch, close kin to the sharks and marine rays, with a skeleton of cartilage, skin of tooth-like denticles, electro-sensory ampullae of Lorenzini, spiracles for breathing while buried, and a serrated venomous tail spine. Endemic to the Orinoco, it belongs to a small genus of giant disc rays and was long lumped within the widespread Paratrygon aiereba before detailed morphological work revealed it as a distinct species; it remains poorly known and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Paratrygon orinocensis was formally described by Loboda, Lasso, Rosa and Carvalho in 2021, in a paper that also named a second new Paratrygon from the Orinoco basin. The species is placed in the family Potamotrygonidae and the order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays — and belongs to the genus Paratrygon, a small group of exceptionally large, nearly round disc rays endemic to South American river systems. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the nomenclatural authority for the valid name.

These are elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is built entirely of cartilage, not bone. They are closer relatives of the sharks and the rays of the sea than of any bony fish in this atlas, and share with those relatives internal fertilisation, a skin of tooth-like dermal denticles, spiracles for water intake while buried, and the remarkable electro-sensory pores (the ampullae of Lorenzini) used to detect prey. The Potamotrygonidae are an ancient freshwater lineage that colonised South American rivers, most likely from the Pacific, and has never returned to salt water.

Prior to the 2021 revision, Orinoco populations of large Paratrygon were referred to Paratrygon aiereba, the widespread Amazonian discus ray; the formal separation rested on detailed morphological characters that distinguish the Orinoco populations as a discrete species. The epithet orinocensis is a Latinised adjectival form of Orinoco, signalling its type locality and range.

Morphology

Paratrygon orinocensis shares the immediately recognisable body plan of its genus: an extremely flattened, nearly circular pectoral disc that is wide relative to its length, giving the fish the silhouette of a large disc rather than a conventional stingray. The holotype measured 11.5 in disc width (DW), with paratypes ranging from 9.5–22.5 in DW, indicating that adults can reach well over half a metre across the disc — making this among the largest freshwater stingrays. Eyes and small triangular spiracles are set on top of the head; the spiracles measure approximately 5.6% of disc width and allow the ray to draw in respiratory water while the mouth and gill slits on the underside face the substrate.

Distinguishing features noted in the original description include the complete absence of lateral thorns on the tail (a character separating it from some congeners), dermal denticles with wide, high crowns and more than twelve lateral ridges, and tooth counts of 22–35 rows in the upper jaw and 20–29 rows in the lower. The skin is covered in these tooth-like denticles — there are no true scales — and a serrated venomous spine sits near the tail base, sheathed in venom-producing tissue and shed and regrown periodically. Males carry paired claspers, the rod-like pelvic-fin copulatory organs characteristic of elasmobranchs, which readily distinguish them from the larger females.

Habitat

Paratrygon orinocensis is known from the mid and lower Orinoco River and the mid Apure River, with collection records from the Apure, Bita and Orinoco rivers in Colombia and Venezuela. It is an endemic of the Orinoco basin — it has not been recorded from the Amazon or any other drainage. The genus Paratrygon in general favours the deeper channels and slower reaches of large lowland rivers, where the fish rest on sand or soft mud substrates; the burying habit is strongly developed, and the spiracles — not the mouth — do the work of drawing water over the gills while the ray is covered in sediment.

No species-specific temperature or pH data were published in the original description, and the cache of ecological literature on P. orinocensis remains thin given its very recent recognition. Orinoco basin river stingrays in general inhabit warm tropical water in the range of roughly 75–79 °F, typically soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic, reflecting the chemistry of the Orinoco and its tributaries. Seasonal floodplain inundation can briefly extend range into flooded forest and shallow margins, though the deeper channels appear to be the core habitat of this large, benthic species.

Feeding

Like all potamotrygonid rays, Paratrygon orinocensis is a benthic carnivore. It hunts bottom-dwelling prey — aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and molluscs, and presumably small fishes — which it detects in part through the ampullae of Lorenzini, the electro-sensory pores scattered across the underside of its disc that pick up the faint bioelectric fields of buried prey. The disc is pressed against the substrate to pin prey, which is then worked back to the tooth plates in the mouth and crushed.

No published diet study specific to P. orinocensis is available, and the species' feeding ecology is inferred from its close relatives. Given its large eventual disc size, adults are likely capable of handling sizeable crustaceans and fishes. The heavy metabolic demands of a large stingray — and the high waste load that comes with them — underline why water quality is so critical for captive animals.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. The male uses one of his paired claspers — rod-like extensions of the inner pelvic fins — to transfer sperm directly into the female. Courtship typically involves the male gripping or biting the margin of the female's disc; the behaviour can be vigorous, leaving bite marks that heal over time. There is no external spawning, no nest site and no pair bond; the mating interaction is brief and the male plays no further role in reproduction.

In Paratrygon, the giant disc size of females relative to males is presumably an adaptation to carry what amounts to a large, well-developed litter. Given the small litter sizes typical of the genus — birth records for Paratrygon aiereba suggest single pups or very small litters are common — individual reproductive effort per gestation is concentrated in a small number of well-provisioned pups rather than many small offspring.

Breeding

Paratrygon orinocensis is viviparous, giving birth to live young, as is universal in the Potamotrygonidae. After the small yolk reserve of the egg is exhausted, the developing pups are nourished inside the uterus by a secreted protein- and fat-rich fluid — the uterine milk or histotroph — produced by projections of the uterine wall and taken up directly by the embryos. This matrotrophic histotrophy allows the pups to grow to a substantial size before birth. Internal fertilisation via the male's claspers precedes this entire developmental process.

The original description notes reproduction data as sparse for this newly described species. Based on the sister species Paratrygon aiereba, litter sizes are small — often a single pup or very few per gestation — and gestation extends over several months, producing fully formed, independent miniature rays at birth. There is no parental care after birth; the pups are self-sufficient immediately. This combination of small litters, long gestation and late maturity means the species reproduces slowly, a life-history trait that makes populations vulnerable to even moderate levels of exploitation.

In the aquarium

Paratrygon orinocensis is rarely encountered in the trade — it is a recently described species from a restricted range, with collecting access complicated by its Orinoco basin distribution and Colombian/Venezuelan regulations — and it would represent a highly specialised undertaking for any aquarist. With a maximum recorded disc width above 22.5 in and a body plan optimised for covering floor area rather than water column, an adult requires an extraordinary amount of horizontal tank space: a tank measured in square metres of footprint, with floor dimensions several times the disc width, is the practical requirement. Height matters far less than area.

The substrate must be deep, fine sand — this ray buries, and sharp gravel abrades the disc and denticle-covered skin with consequences for health. Water quality must be pristine at all times: river stingrays are scaleless, metabolically active and acutely sensitive to ammonia and accumulated nitrate; powerful biological filtration combined with large, frequent water changes is not optional. No salt, no copper-based medications, and no fin-nipping or aggressive tankmates are tolerated. The venomous tail spine is a serious hazard — a sting is intensely painful and can require medical attention — making this species unsuitable in any setting accessible to children, and its possession is restricted or requires licensing in many jurisdictions. Captive-bred stock should always be sought over wild-caught animals.

Conservation

Paratrygon orinocensis is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Its endemic range within the Orinoco basin means it cannot benefit from the wider distribution of Paratrygon aiereba, and any decline in the mid and lower Orinoco would affect its entire global population. Subsistence and commercial fisheries targeting Paratrygon in Venezuela extracted an estimated 2.7 tonnes of Paratrygon spp. per year between 1996 and 2002 using harpoons; incidental catch in the Colombian Arauca River (a tributary of the Orinoco) has also been documented as a cause of population decline.

River stingrays as a group reproduce slowly — small litters, months-long gestation, late sexual maturity — which makes populations highly sensitive to even modest levels of additional mortality. Paratrygon orinocensis faces the typical pressures of the family: harvest for food and hides, killing out of fear of the sting, ornamental-trade collection, and habitat degradation including pollution and the disruptive effects of river infrastructure. Its congener Paratrygon aiereba is listed on CITES Appendix III in Colombia, flagging the genus as a trade-concern group; the status of P. orinocensis under CITES is not separately listed given its recent description, but the Orinoco basin as a whole has been identified by the CITES Animals Committee as a priority region for river stingray monitoring. Better survey data and managed, sustainable supply chains remain the priority conservation needs, now that a formal Vulnerable listing confirms the concern these pressures raised.
