Taxonomy & naming
Paratrygon parvaspina was described by Loboda, Lasso, Rosa and Carvalho in 2021, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 19), and is placed in the family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. The genus Paratrygon is a small lineage within this exclusively South American freshwater family, distinguished from the large central genus Potamotrygon by disc proportions, lateral-line architecture and other morphological characters. These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) whose skeleton is not bone but cartilage, kin to the sharks and the marine rays rather than to any bony fish.
The 2021 paper simultaneously described two new Paratrygon species from the Orinoco basin and revised the taxonomy of the genus relative to the widespread P. aiereba. The holotype of P. parvaspina is an adult female (IAvH-P 12447, 17.5 in DW) collected from the Bita River, Orinoco basin; a juvenile female paratype (IAvH-P 12441, 9 in DW) is also catalogued. The species is sympatric with P. orinocensis in the Orinoco and is distinguished from it by disc format (more rounded than oval) and lateral-line morphology, among other characters. No vernacular or trade name has been established for this recently described ray.
Morphology
Paratrygon parvaspina has the characteristic disc-shaped body of its family: a large, rounded to slightly oval pectoral disc, flattened for life on the bottom, with the eyes and paired spiracles set on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits positioned ventrally. The holotype female measured 17.5 in (17.5 in) disc width, indicating a substantial ray; the disc is described as more rounded than oval, a character that helps separate it from P. orinocensis. The skin is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles rather than true scales, a feature shared with sharks and all elasmobranchs.
The tail bears, near its base, one or more serrated venomous spines — modified denticle structures sheathed in venom-producing tissue, shed and regrown periodically — that are the source of the family's common name. Spiracles on the dorsal surface of the head allow the ray to draw in respiratory water while buried in substrate or while feeding ventrally. Males are externally distinguished from females by paired claspers, rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner margins of the pelvic fins; females typically grow larger. The ampullae of Lorenzini, electro-sensory pores scattered primarily on the ventral surface, provide sensitivity to the weak bioelectric fields of buried prey.
Habitat
Paratrygon parvaspina is endemic to the Orinoco basin, with a restricted distribution in the mid to upper portions of the main Orinoco River and its tributaries, including the Bita River from which the type material was collected. It is sympatric with P. orinocensis in parts of its range but appears to have a more limited distribution than that congener. The Orinoco system spans a large area of Venezuela and Colombia, and the mid-to-upper basin encompasses rivers of varying chemistry, though the Orinoco mainstream and many of its tributaries carry nutrient-richer white or clear water rather than the blackwater typical of parts of the Amazon.
The species is described as a specialist of deep-water channels — a habit consistent with the large disc size of the genus Paratrygon and with the tendency for large river rays to occupy deeper, more open stretches of the main channel and major tributaries rather than the shallow margins favoured by smaller Potamotrygon. It is a benthic animal, resting and foraging on the river bottom. Like all Potamotrygonidae it respires through the spiracles on the dorsal head surface, enabling it to draw in water while lying flat on the substrate.
Feeding
Paratrygon parvaspina, like its relatives, is a benthic carnivore. The detailed diet of this newly described species has not been formally studied, but the feeding strategy of the family is well characterised: river stingrays are ambush predators of the river bottom, detecting buried invertebrates and small fish through the electro-sensory ampullae of Lorenzini, which respond to the faint electrical fields produced by living prey. The disc is pressed over prey items and the animal works them back to crushing tooth-plates in the ventral mouth.
In the wild, South American river stingrays feed on aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, worms and small fishes depending on local availability. The deep-channel habitat of P. parvaspina suggests it encounters the invertebrates and fishes of the main-channel benthos. In captivity, comparable large rays are fed a meaty diet of whole invertebrates and fish — earthworms, prawns, mussels, and similar items presented on the tank floor.
Mating
River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male approaches and grips a female's disc, typically by biting at the margin, and inserts one of his paired claspers — the rod-like pelvic-fin copulatory organs unique to elasmobranchs — to deliver sperm. Courtship can be vigorous, with the male's biting leaving characteristic marks on the female's disc that subsequently heal. There is no external spawning, no nest, and no fertilised egg exposed to the water; everything from fertilisation onward takes place inside the female.
Specific mating observations for P. parvaspina have not been published given the species is newly described and essentially unstudied in captivity, but the reproductive system is shared across the family. The male plays no further role after mating; there is no pair bond and no male parental care of the developing young.
Breeding
Paratrygon parvaspina is viviparous — it gives birth to live young — and nourishes its developing pups by matrotrophic histotrophy, the feeding strategy shared across the Potamotrygonidae. After the small yolk of the egg is consumed, the embryos are sustained inside the uterus by a protein- and lipid-rich secretion (histotroph, or "uterine milk") produced by specialised uterine tissue; the pups take this up directly. This allows them to grow substantially before birth, so that they enter the world as miniature, independent rays.
Litter size data for P. parvaspina specifically are not available from the published description, which noted data as sparse. In the related and comparably large P. aiereba, litters are typically small — a few pups per gestation. Gestation in river stingrays generally spans several months. There is no parental care after birth; the pups are independent immediately. The combination of small litters, long gestation, and late sexual maturity makes Paratrygon one of the more slowly reproducing freshwater ray genera, with significant implications for how populations respond to harvest pressure.
In the aquarium
Paratrygon parvaspina is not established in the aquarium hobby and, given its restricted Orinoco distribution, the depth of the channels it inhabits, and the fact that it was described only in 2021, it is essentially unknown in trade. If any specimens have been collected for aquaria they are likely to have been misidentified as Paratrygon aiereba or another large river ray.
Should this species ever become available, the husbandry requirements would be extreme. Paratrygon is among the largest genera of South American freshwater stingrays; a disc width of 17.5 in implies an animal requiring a tank with several square metres of floor space, deep soft fine sand (essential for a species that buries — sharp gravel abrades the disc), and water maintained at aquarium-stingray standards: warm, soft, near-neutral, with ammonia near zero and nitrate kept low through heavy filtration and large, frequent water changes. River stingrays are scaleless, carry a high metabolic load, and are acutely sensitive to water quality deterioration and to copper-based medications. Aggressive or fin-nipping tankmates must be excluded. The venomous tail spine is a genuine medical hazard — stingray injuries are intensely painful and potentially serious — making Paratrygon entirely unsuitable for households with children and subject to legal restrictions in many jurisdictions. Only captive-bred animals should be considered, and for a ray of this size, difficulty, and rarity, even experienced stingray keepers should proceed with great caution.
Conservation
Paratrygon parvaspina is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It was recognised as a distinct species only in 2021, and dedicated abundance surveys remain limited. Its endemic distribution in the mid to upper Orinoco basin is geographically restricted compared to the widespread P. aiereba, which increases its vulnerability to localised threats.
The pressures facing Orinoco river stingrays include directed harvest for the ornamental aquarium trade, incidental capture in commercial fisheries, killing out of fear of the venomous sting, and broader environmental stressors including pollution, sedimentation, gold mining (with associated mercury contamination), and hydrological alteration. Paratrygon reproduces slowly — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — so populations recover poorly from sustained removal. Several Potamotrygon species and their range states have sought regulation under CITES; Venezuela and Colombia, the principal range states of P. parvaspina, have varying levels of trade oversight. The immediate priority for this ray is basic survey work to determine distribution, abundance, and the degree to which it is affected by trade collection and habitat change, so that conservation and trade management can be grounded in real population data rather than inference from its more widespread congener.
