Plesiotrygon iwamae, the antenna ray or longtail river stingray, is one of the most distinctive freshwater stingrays in the world — a cartilaginous fish, not a bony one, belonging to the elasmobranch lineage of sharks and rays rather than to the bony fishes that fill the rest of this atlas. Described in 1987 from the Amazon basin and placed in its own monotypic genus Plesiotrygon, it is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally long, whip-like tail — far longer in proportion than the tail of any Potamotrygon — which trails behind the rounded disc like an antenna and gives the species its popular name. Found from the upper Amazon in Ecuador and Peru to the lower Amazon near Belém, Brazil, it is a demersal specialist of soft sandy and silty river beds in warm, soft, near-neutral water. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2021, reflecting the slow reproductive rate and pressures that threaten all river stingrays, and it is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby due to its size, specialist requirements, and conservation status.

Taxonomy & naming

Plesiotrygon iwamae was described by Rosa, Castello, and Thorson in 1987 on the basis of specimens collected from the Amazon basin, and at the same time was placed in the newly erected monotypic genus Plesiotrygon — the first member of the genus ever described. The type specimen (holotype MZUSP 10153, a male with a disc width of 21.5 in) was collected from Brazilian Amazonia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats the combination as valid, and GBIF records it under the same authority. No synonyms are currently recognised.

The genus name and its placement in the family Potamotrygonidae locate the species firmly within the South American freshwater stingrays, order Myliobatiformes. These are elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is formed entirely of cartilage rather than bone, closely related to the sharks and to the marine stingrays rather than to any bony fish. They are believed to have colonised South American river systems from the Pacific coast millions of years ago, becoming permanently landlocked as the Andes rose and sealed the rivers into the Atlantic drainage. The genus name Plesiotrygon (from Greek plesios, near or close to, and trygon, stingray) suggests a relationship close to the ancestral stingray form; the epithet iwamae honours the ichthyologist whose work contributed to its discovery.

The species is sometimes called the antenna ray or longtail river stingray in English, names that describe its most conspicuous feature. It should not be confused with any Potamotrygon; its proportionally enormous tail and monotypic genus status make it immediately distinctive within the family.

Morphology

The body plan of Plesiotrygon iwamae follows the family pattern: a broad, rounded pectoral disc, dorsoventrally flattened for life on the riverbed, with the eyes and paired spiracles opening on the dorsal surface and the mouth, paired nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits on the ventral surface. The disc reaches a maximum width of approximately 23 in in adults, making this a mid-sized ray by family standards. What sets the species apart from every other Potamotrygonidae is its tail: extraordinarily long and whip-like, projecting far behind the disc and bearing the characteristic venomous sting near its base.

The venomous sting (or stings; they may be multiple) is a modified dermal denticle sheathed in venom-producing tissue. The entire skin surface is covered in similar tooth-like denticles rather than scales — a feature shared with all elasmobranchs. On the underside of the disc, around the mouth and rostrum, are the ampullae of Lorenzini: gel-filled electroreceptor pores that detect the weak electric fields produced by buried prey animals. Males are distinguished from females by the pair of claspers, rod-like copulatory organs formed from the medial edges of the pelvic fins. An unusual anatomical feature reported for the species is the absence of a functional right ovary in females, with only the left ovary active in reproduction.

Habitat

Plesiotrygon iwamae occurs across a broad longitudinal stretch of the Amazon basin, from the upper Amazon in Ecuador and Peru (including the Napo and Solimões river systems) to the lower Amazon near Belém in the Brazilian state of Pará. It is a demersal freshwater species found in the main channel and associated tributaries, resting on and partially buried in soft sandy or silty substrates in the manner typical of the family. Freshwater only; it has not been recorded in estuarine or coastal marine environments.

Water conditions in the occupied portions of the Amazon basin are warm and soft, with the Solimões system carrying white-water enriched by Andean sediment and the eastern tributaries tending toward clearer or slightly blackwater chemistry. Aquarium care references indicate that the species is maintained in water with pH 6–7, total hardness 5–8 °dGH, and temperature 77–82 °F — parameters consistent with soft, slightly acidic Amazonian water over fine-grained substrates. Like all Potamotrygonidae, it breathes partly through the spiracles on the top of the head, drawing water in while buried and forcing it out over the gills, which allows normal respiration without exposing the delicate gill arches to abrasive sediment.

Feeding

Plesiotrygon iwamae is a carnivore of the river bottom. FishBase records its diet as including small catfishes, aquatic insects, decapod crustaceans, and it has also been found to host parasitic cestodes and nematodes internally. The combination of fishes and invertebrates in the diet is consistent with the benthic hunting strategy shared by the family: the ray lies partly buried or moves slowly along the substrate, detecting buried prey with the ampullae of Lorenzini on its underside, then pins animals against the sediment with the disc before manoeuvring them to the toothed crushing plates of the mouth.

In captivity, Plesiotrygon iwamae can be conditioned to accept earthworms, prawns, mussel meat, and small whole fish offered directly on the tank floor. Like all of its family it is a heavy eater that generates a substantial bioload relative to its size, and the metabolic waste it produces amplifies the already acute sensitivity to water quality that characterises the group. Feeding is best done at dusk or in subdued light, reflecting the species' crepuscular and nocturnal tendencies on the river bottom.

Mating

Plesiotrygon iwamae reproduces by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male approaches the female and grips her disc margin with his teeth — bite marks on the disc edge are a normal consequence of courtship — and inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. The claspers are the only reliable external feature distinguishing the sexes, apart from the generally smaller size of males. There is no elaborate courtship display, no territory, and no long-term pair bond; in a species with such a long, whip-like tail, manoeuvring during mating in shallow-floored river habitats requires a degree of space that aquarium conditions rarely replicate.

Fertilisation occurs internally and the embryos are retained within the female. Captive reproduction of this species is rarely documented, in part because the combination of its size and specialised requirements makes large-scale captive keeping uncommon. Reproductive cycle data from the broader literature on Amazonian stingrays describes a rhythm of gonadal maturation (roughly three months), copulation, pregnancy, parturition, and a resting phase before the next cycle.

Breeding

Plesiotrygon iwamae is viviparous, bearing live young in the manner of all Potamotrygonidae. After the small yolk reserves of the egg are exhausted, the developing embryos are sustained entirely by uterine secretions — a nutrient-rich histotroph, or 'uterine milk', delivered through specialised vascularised extensions of the uterine wall called trophonemata. This mode of reproduction, matrotrophic histotrophy, is shared with all members of the family and represents one of the most energetically demanding reproductive strategies among freshwater fishes. In Plesiotrygon iwamae, only the left ovary is functional, meaning the full reproductive load is concentrated in one side of the female's reproductive tract.

Litter sizes are small — reflecting the energetic cost of histotrophic nourishment — and pups are born as fully formed, independent miniature rays. FishBase notes that pups are free-swimming by around 4.5 in disc length. There is no parental care after birth; the neonates are immediately self-sufficient and must find shelter in the substrate. The slow pace of this reproduction — small litters, months-long gestation, late sexual maturity — means that populations recover slowly from depletion, and any significant harvest pressure carries a high risk of overexploiting the species.

In the aquarium

Plesiotrygon iwamae is a genuinely exceptional case even among river stingrays, combining the considerable demands of the family with the added complexity of its extraordinary tail length. A tank large enough for a disc up to 23 in across must also accommodate a tail that extends far beyond the disc; the footprint required is substantial, measured in multiple square metres of floor area rather than volume. The substrate must be a deep bed of soft, fine sand — the disc abrades against any rougher material, and these rays must be able to bury completely. Filtration must be powerful, with very large and frequent water changes, because river stingrays are scaleless, produce heavy waste, and are extremely sensitive to ammonia and accumulated nitrate.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6–7, low hardness, temperature 77–82 °F), with no salt whatsoever. Copper-based medications are toxic and must never be used; many other compounds are similarly dangerous to cartilaginous fish. Tankmates must be peaceful, non-nipping species that will not compete for the sand floor; aggressive or large substrate-oriented fish are incompatible. The venomous spine is the most serious practical hazard: a puncture from a stingray spine is medically significant, causing intense pain and sometimes requiring hospitalisation. This makes Plesiotrygon iwamae — like all river stingrays — unsuitable in households with children or in any setting where hands may accidentally contact the animal in the tank. Many jurisdictions require permits or prohibit private keeping of river stingrays entirely. Where keeping is legal, only captive-bred individuals should be sought.

Despite its rarity in the hobby, captive notes confirm that Plesiotrygon iwamae is occasionally maintained in specialist facilities and will accept standard stingray foods. It is not a beginner fish by any reasonable standard, and its Vulnerable conservation status adds a strong ethical dimension to any decision to acquire one.

Conservation

The IUCN assessed Plesiotrygon iwamae as Vulnerable (VU) in March 2021 under criterion A2cd, indicating a suspected population decline driven by a combination of direct exploitation and habitat degradation. The assessment reflects the species' slow reproductive biology — small litters, long gestation, and late maturity — which means that even modest levels of ongoing harvest or mortality can outpace replacement and drive declines that are difficult to detect and slow to reverse.

The pressures acting on the species are those shared by all Amazonian river stingrays: capture for the ornamental fish trade, incidental bycatch in artisanal fisheries, deliberate killing because of the sting (which is seen as a hazard by fishing communities), and habitat alteration. Major hydroelectric infrastructure in the Amazon basin fragments rivers, disrupts migratory movements, and alters the sediment and hydrological dynamics that these bottom-dwelling rays depend upon. Mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining is a documented concern across the western Amazon, affecting prey organisms as well as the rays themselves.

Brazil and Colombia have sought controls on Potamotrygonidae under CITES Appendix III, and Brazil restricts the commercial export of wild-caught river stingrays. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a federal record of the species in recognition of its listing status. For a species as inherently slow to reproduce as Plesiotrygon iwamae, the combination of targeted and incidental exploitation and ongoing habitat change represents a credible extinction risk, and any trade in the species — whether for aquaria or food — should be met with strong scrutiny of sourcing and provenance.
