Potamotrygon constellata, the thorny river stingray, is a cartilaginous fish — not a bony fish but an elasmobranch, a true relative of the sharks and marine rays that colonised South America's river systems long ago and stayed. Described by Vaillant in 1880 from the Upper Amazon near Calderon in Brazil, it haunts the sandy beds and submerged margins of the Amazon and Solimões basins, where it lies buried and nearly invisible, waiting. It is a modestly sized species compared to the giants of its family, reaching around 24.5 in disc width, and it carries the venomous serrated spine on its tail that characterises its genus — a serious-injury hazard commanding caution from any keeper. Across its range in Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador it shares white-water and transitional-water rivers with other Potamotrygon species; it is rarely seen in the aquarium trade and is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, a designation that reflects the shortage of survey data rather than a verdict on its abundance.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon constellata was described by Léon Vaillant in 1880, with the type locality given as Calderon on the Upper Amazon in Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats it as a valid species within the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, subfamily Potamotrygoninae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. No old generic combinations are recognised; the name has been stable since its original description.

These are elasmobranchs: their skeleton is cartilage, not bone, and they share a deep common ancestry with the sharks and with the marine rays of oceanic waters, not with any of the bony fishes that make up almost everything else in this atlas. Potamotrygonidae is a wholly freshwater family native to South America, with Potamotrygon its largest and most diverse genus. P. constellata is not closely allied to any single congener and has not been the subject of extensive molecular phylogenetic work; its relationships within the genus remain broadly uncertain.

The species epithet constellata is a Latin past participle meaning 'set with stars' or 'studded,' a reference to the patterning of the disc. Distribution records from GBIF and Shark-References confirm its presence in Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador within the Amazon and Solimões system.

Morphology

Like all members of its family, P. constellata has a flattened, roughly oval pectoral disc formed by the fusion of the enlarged pectoral fins with the head and trunk. The eyes and paired spiracles — openings used to draw water in for respiration while the ray is buried or resting on the bottom — sit on the dorsal surface of the head, while the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits face downward. The skin is covered in tooth-like dermal denticles rather than true scales; scattered tubercles or thorns on the dorsal surface are typical of the species and contribute to its common name.

According to data in Shark-References, the maximum recorded disc width (DW) is 24.5 in in males or unsexed individuals, while females mature at 14–17.5 in DW and males at 12.5–13.5 in DW, suggesting females attain larger sizes as adults. Total body length, including the tail, is considerably greater than the disc width alone. The tail is equipped with one or more serrated, venomous tail spines — modified denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue — that are shed and regrown periodically and are capable of inflicting deep, intensely painful wounds.

Electrosensory pores (ampullae of Lorenzini) are distributed across the ventral surface of the disc, giving the ray the ability to detect the faint bioelectric fields of buried or concealed prey. Males are distinguished from females by the paired claspers, rod-like extensions of the inner pelvic fins that function as copulatory organs — their presence or absence is the simplest way to sex the species.

Habitat

Potamotrygon constellata is recorded from the Amazon and Solimões river basins of Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador — a drainage system dominated by white water (sediment-rich, moderately mineralised, near-neutral waters) rather than the soft, darkly stained blackwater of the Guiana Shield rivers or the clear waters of the southern shield tributaries. Its type locality, Calderon on the Upper Amazon, places it in the main-channel Amazonian system rather than in any single tributary endemic.

As a benthopelagic, potamodromous species, it lives on or very close to the bottom and moves within freshwater systems rather than undertaking marine migrations. It buries in fine substrates — sand and silt — where it rests with only its eyes and spiracles above the surface, drawing in clean water through those dorsal openings rather than through the mouth. Sandy beaches, river margins, backwaters, and seasonally flooded zones all provide the flat, soft-bottomed habitat this ray uses.

Water temperatures typical for the main Amazon system hover in the warm tropical range, broadly 75–82 °F, with chemistry tending toward soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions (pH approximately 6.5–7.2 for white-water zones). This distinguishes P. constellata from species such as P. leopoldi and P. henlei, which are associated with the soft, acidic blackwater and clearwater of the Xingu and Tapajós — basins not part of this species' recorded range.

Feeding

River stingrays are active benthic predators and P. constellata is no exception. It hunts by lying concealed in or on the substrate and using its ventral ampullae of Lorenzini to detect the bioelectric fields of invertebrates and small fishes buried just below or resting on the sediment surface. When prey is located, the disc pins it against the bottom; the jaws and flattened tooth-plates then work it backward toward the throat.

The diet of Potamotrygon species in the Amazon system consists primarily of aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs, and worms — supplemented by small fishes where available. No specific feeding studies are available in the accessible literature for P. constellata itself, but its ecology, disc morphology, and dentition are consistent with this broadly invertebrate-carnivore pattern documented across its congeners.

In captivity, similar Potamotrygon species are fed meaty benthic foods: earthworms, prawns, mussels, whole fish, and high-quality frozen invertebrate mixes. Feeding at the bottom of the tank and presenting food on or near the sand surface best matches the ray's natural foraging posture. Like all large Potamotrygon, P. constellata is a heavy feeder that generates a substantial waste load, placing high demands on filtration.

Mating

Fertilisation in Potamotrygon constellata, as in every member of its family, is internal. A sexually mature male approaches a receptive female and attempts to grip her disc margin with his teeth — contact that often leaves shallow bite marks that subsequently heal — before introducing one of his paired claspers into her cloaca to transfer sperm. Courtship can be persistent and physically demanding on the female; in captive settings, the female should have space to evade unwanted attention, and feeding should be monitored to ensure she is not outcompeted.

The male's claspers are unambiguous sexing characters: they project from the inner edges of the pelvic fins and are clearly visible in adult males, whereas adult females show no such projection. Males of P. constellata reach sexual maturity at a reported disc width of 12.5–13.5 in; females at 14–17.5 in DW, which implies a longer pre-reproductive period and reinforces the slow demographic turnover of the species.

There is no pair bond in this or any freshwater stingray, and the male's involvement in reproduction ends at mating. All subsequent investment is by the female.

Breeding

Potamotrygon constellata is viviparous — it gives birth to fully formed live young rather than laying eggs. After internal fertilisation, the small yolk reserve of each embryo is soon exhausted, and the developing pups are subsequently nourished by a secretion produced by the uterine wall: a protein- and fat-rich fluid called histotroph, or uterine milk, that the embryos take up directly through the mouth, spiracles, and specialised gill structures. This mode — matrotrophic histotrophy — is shared by all Potamotrygonidae and allows pups to grow to a relatively large size before birth.

According to data recorded in Shark-References, females of P. constellata carry up to eleven fetuses per gestation — a moderately large litter for the genus, though the figure likely represents a maximum in large females rather than a typical clutch. Gestation lasts several months. Pups are born as miniature but fully functional rays, capable of independent movement and feeding within days; there is no parental care after parturition.

The reproductive biology of river stingrays — small litters, months-long gestation, and late sexual maturity — makes their populations inherently slow to recover from depletion. A species that may produce at most a handful of pups per female per year cannot sustain the same harvest pressure as a bony fish spawning thousands of eggs each season, and this is a central consideration for conservation and trade management.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon constellata is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and should be considered a specialist species. Its disc width of up to 24.5 in means a large adult requires a tank footprint measured in square metres — wide and long rather than tall, because floor area is what matters for a disc-shaped bottom-dweller. Minimum tank dimensions for a single adult would be in the range of 7 ft × 5 ft or greater; smaller tanks stunt the fish physically and behaviorally.

The substrate must be a deep bed of fine, soft sand — not gravel, not coarse sand, not bare-bottom. The ray buries daily: sharp or coarse material abrades the unprotected skin of the disc, leading to infection. Water quality must be kept pristine at all times; like all scaleless fishes with high metabolic rates, P. constellata is acutely sensitive to ammonia and to accumulated nitrate. Heavy, oversized biological filtration and frequent partial water changes (20–30 % weekly as a baseline) are not optional. No salt should ever be added. Many medications — copper-based treatments especially — are dangerous to elasmobranchs and must be avoided.

The venomous tail spine is a genuine medical hazard. Rays sting reflexively when startled or accidentally stepped on, and the serrated spine can penetrate deeply and deliver venom that causes severe, prolonged pain; wounds occasionally require hospital treatment. This species is not suitable for households with children, and many jurisdictions require a permit or prohibit keeping venomous rays entirely. Captive-bred animals are strongly preferred over wild-caught stock; they are better acclimated to artificial conditions, reduce pressure on wild populations, and are less likely to carry parasites or disease. Tankmates, if any, must be large, placid, and unable to nip at the disc or sting.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Potamotrygon constellata as Data Deficient (DD) — a designation that reflects the scarcity of systematic population survey data for a fish that is difficult to census and whose taxonomy had, until recently, uncertain boundaries. Data Deficient does not mean the species is presumed secure; it means that the information required to make a full assessment has not yet been gathered.

The pressures facing P. constellata are the same ones affecting most freshwater stingrays of the Amazon basin: collection for the ornamental trade, incidental capture and killing in commercial fisheries, deliberate killing by fishermen who regard the venomous spine as a danger, large-scale habitat modification through damming and river management, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining that is now documented across major Amazonian tributaries. The species' reproductive biology — slow maturity, small litters, long gestation — means that populations cannot quickly replace losses, even from moderate harvest pressure.

No CITES Appendix listing specific to P. constellata was found in the available sources, though Brazil and Colombia have sought controls on Potamotrygon trade through CITES mechanisms for other species, and Brazil restricts the export of wild stingrays. Because P. constellata is rarely bred in captivity and its distribution is centred in regions where enforcement of collection regulations is variable, demand for wild-caught specimens carries a disproportionate risk relative to the species' capacity to absorb it. The priority should be generating the basic population and range data needed to replace the DD assessment with something more informative, alongside support for captive-breeding programmes.
