Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon amazona was formally described by Fontenelle and Carvalho in 2017 as part of a systematic revision of the Potamotrygon scobina species complex, a group of medium-sized South American river stingrays that had long been lumped under a single name. The revision split the complex into several valid species; P. amazona, named for the Amazon basin in which it lives, was one of three new species erected at that time. Its placement in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes is confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is composed entirely of cartilage rather than bone, grouping them with the sharks, skates, and marine rays rather than with any of the bony fishes. The family Potamotrygonidae is an ancient lineage of rays that became isolated in South American freshwaters and diversified there into the only family of stingrays fully committed to freshwater life. Potamotrygon is its largest genus. Because P. amazona was only recently separated from P. scobina, older references and much aquarium literature will not recognise it as a distinct species, and specimens may still circulate under the scobina name or under no name at all.
Morphology
Potamotrygon amazona has the characteristic form of its family: a rounded, flattened pectoral disc adapted for benthic life, with the eyes and paired spiracles positioned on the dorsal surface of the head so the ray can breathe while resting on or buried in the substrate. The gill slits and the underslung mouth open ventrally. FishBase records a maximum disc width of 23 in for this species, making it a medium-to-large member of the genus. Total length, tail included, is considerably greater than the disc width.
The tail is moderate in length and bears, near its base, one or more serrated venomous spines — highly modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue, which are shed and periodically regrown. The skin is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles rather than scales, giving it a rough, sandpaper texture. As in all Potamotrygon, males carry paired claspers — rod-like extensions of the inner pelvic fins that function as copulatory organs — while females are typically larger and lack them, making sex determination straightforward in adults. Distributed across the face and disc underside are the ampullae of Lorenzini, electrosensory pores that detect the faint electrical fields produced by buried prey.
Habitat
Potamotrygon amazona is known from the Jutaí and Juruá river systems, both western tributaries of the Amazon mainstem in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. These are warm lowland rivers carrying the moderately mineralised, near-neutral to slightly acidic water characteristic of the upper Amazon drainage — broadly white-water in character, richer in dissolved minerals than the tea-dark blackwater rivers of the Guiana Shield, though varying locally with season and channel position.
Like other members of its family, P. amazona inhabits sandy and fine-sediment riverbed margins, the edges of slow channels, and shallow benthic zones where it can partially bury itself in substrate. It breathes by drawing water in through the spiracles on the top of the head rather than through the mouth, a vital adaptation for a fish that rests buried. Its apparent range restriction to two river systems suggests it may be a relatively narrow endemic within the upper Amazon, though the paucity of survey data makes it difficult to know whether it is genuinely rare or merely under-collected.
Feeding
Potamotrygon amazona is a benthic carnivore in the tradition of its family, feeding on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small fish detected via the electrosensory ampullae of Lorenzini as well as by olfaction and touch. Prey items typical of the genus include aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, molluscs, and small fishes, which the ray pins against the substrate with the underside of its disc before manipulating them to the crushing dental plates of the jaw.
No species-specific feeding studies appear to have been published for P. amazona, but aquarium husbandry draws on the well-documented preferences of the genus: meaty whole foods such as earthworms, prawn, mussel, and pieces of fish are accepted, and captive rays often learn to feed from the keeper's hand. High food intake produces proportionally high metabolic waste, which is one reason freshwater stingrays generate significant ammonia loads relative to their body size — a challenge that directly informs their demanding water-quality requirements.
Mating
River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male approaches the female and, after often vigorous courtship, grips her disc with his mouth — a grip that can leave visible bite marks along the disc margin that heal in time — and inserts one of his paired claspers to transfer sperm directly into the female's reproductive tract. There is no courtship nest, no external egg, and no site fidelity; the relationship between the sexes is essentially limited to the mating encounter itself.
The claspers are a reliable sexing character in mature animals: males have prominent, elongated paired organs projecting behind the pelvic fins, while females are smooth-flanked and typically larger. No mating behaviour specific to P. amazona has been described in the literature, but the mechanics are uniform across Potamotrygonidae and are well established for closely related species in captivity. There is no pair bond and no parental involvement beyond the female's investment in pregnancy.
Breeding
Potamotrygon amazona is viviparous — it gives birth to live young, as all members of the family Potamotrygonidae do. After fertilisation, the embryos initially draw on a small egg yolk, but once that yolk is exhausted, the mother sustains the developing pups inside the uterus through a remarkable mechanism: the uterine wall produces a nutrient-rich secretion, a protein- and fat-laden 'uterine milk' (histotroph) that the embryos absorb directly through specialised structures. This matrotrophic histotrophy supports substantial embryonic growth before birth.
Litter sizes in the genus are modest — commonly a few to perhaps a dozen pups in large females — and gestation extends over several months. The pups are born as fully formed, free-living miniature rays capable of independent feeding within days of birth. There is no parental care after parturition. This reproductive strategy — slow maturation, small litters, and a long gestation — means the species replaces itself slowly, which has direct consequences for how much harvest pressure wild populations can sustain. No captive breeding records specific to P. amazona appear in the accessible literature, though closely related species have been bred in large, well-managed aquaria.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon amazona is a rarely encountered species in the aquarium trade; most ray keepers are more likely to come across the common motoro or other better-established Potamotrygon. Where it does appear, the husbandry requirements are those of the genus: a tank whose floor area is measured in square metres, with length and width well in excess of the adult disc width, and considerably more floor space than height. A deep bed of soft, fine sand is non-negotiable — this is a fish that buries, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate will abrade its delicate, scaleless skin.
Water quality is the central challenge. Freshwater stingrays are exquisitely sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and accumulated nitrate, and they generate substantial waste relative to their size. Heavy biological filtration, mechanical cleaning, and large, frequent water changes are all essential rather than optional. The water should be warm (75–82 °F), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5), and contain no salt; the species should never receive copper-based medications and is sensitive to many other treatments. Tankmates must be peaceful and non-nipping; any fish aggressive enough to harass the disc or fins is a serious risk to the ray's health. The venomous tail spine demands respect at all times during maintenance and handling — a wound from a stingray spine is intensely painful and potentially medically serious, and in many jurisdictions keeping freshwater stingrays is subject to licensing restrictions or is prohibited. Captive-bred stock, where available, is always preferable to wild-caught.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Potamotrygon amazona as Least Concern in 2021, reflecting the available data at the time of evaluation. However, like much of Potamotrygonidae, the species is poorly surveyed: it was only described in 2017 and appears to be restricted to two river systems in the upper Amazon, making population estimates difficult. Its recent recognition as a distinct species means historical collection records under the P. scobina name confound any attempt to track abundance trends.
The pressures that affect river stingrays broadly apply here. Freshwater stingrays reproduce slowly — small litters, long gestation, and late sexual maturity mean that populations recover slowly from harvest, whether for the ornamental trade, food, or killing motivated by fear of the sting. Several Potamotrygon species are listed under CITES Appendix III through nominations from Brazil and Colombia, and Brazil has regulated the export of wild-caught rays through IBAMA since 1990, with annual export quotas covering the genus. Habitat degradation, dam construction across Amazonian river systems, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining are systemic threats throughout the range. The precautionary implication for a species with a narrow apparent distribution is that even modest harvest or habitat change could affect local populations before any trend becomes detectable.
