Taxonomy & naming
Plesiotrygon nana was described by Carvalho and Ragno in 2011 and is placed in the genus Plesiotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. It is an elasmobranch: a cartilaginous fish whose internal skeleton is composed entirely of cartilage, not bone, placing it firmly in the class Chondrichthyes alongside the sharks and the marine rays rather than among the bony fishes (Actinopterygii) that make up almost all other aquarium taxa. Potamotrygonidae is a natural family of strictly freshwater rays that diverged from a marine ancestor long ago and have been confined to South American river systems ever since.
The genus Plesiotrygon is a small genus of potamotrygonids, distinct from the large, species-rich Potamotrygon and notable for its members' generally slender proportions. The species epithet nana is Latin for 'dwarf' or 'small', directly reflecting the diminutive size that distinguishes this species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name Plesiotrygon nana Carvalho & Ragno, 2011. Because the species was formally named only recently, the literature on it is thin, and much of what is known of its biology is inferred from the broader family and genus.
Morphology
Plesiotrygon nana shares the body plan common to all potamotrygonids: a flattened, roughly oval to sub-circular pectoral disc suited to life on the riverbed, with the eyes and paired spiracles on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nares and gill slits on the ventral side. It is notably small by the standards of the family; disc width is reported to remain under roughly 6 in in adults, making it one of the most diminutive freshwater stingrays known. Data on the upper limit of disc size are sparse given the few specimens formally examined.
The tail is slender and bears a serrated venomous spine near its base — a modified dermal denticle sheathed in venom-producing tissue, shed and regrown periodically. As in all potamotrygonids, the skin bears tiny tooth-like denticles rather than true scales. The electrosensory system includes the ampullae of Lorenzini — pores scattered across the disc that detect the faint electrical fields of buried prey and the fields of other animals. Males are distinguished from females by the paired claspers: rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner margins of the pelvic fins, absent in females.
Habitat
Plesiotrygon nana is endemic to western Amazon drainages, with records from Brazil, Peru and Colombia. It inhabits tributaries and channels of the greater Solimões–Amazon system, where it rests on soft sediment — sand and fine silt — along the margins of rivers and associated flooded or slow-water habitats. Like all members of its family it is a benthic, bottom-dwelling animal that frequently lies partly buried in the substrate.
The water chemistry of the western Amazon ranges from warm, soft, acidic blackwater to somewhat mineralised white-water rivers; the cache records indicate this species favours warm, soft, acidic conditions in the range of roughly 77–82 °F and pH 4–6, consistent with the black- and mixed-water tributary environments of that region. It breathes by drawing water in through the spiracles on the top of the head — paired openings that allow respiration while the animal is buried and the mouth is pressed against the substrate — and expels water across the gill slits on the underside. No salt is present in these freshwater systems.
Feeding
Plesiotrygon nana is a carnivore and a benthic hunter, as is universal in the family. It uses the ampullae of Lorenzini — the electrosensory pores distributed across the underside of the disc — to detect the electrical fields produced by invertebrates and small animals buried in or moving over the sediment. It then pins prey beneath the disc and works it back to the tooth-plates in the jaws.
Given its small disc size, prey is likely restricted to small invertebrates: aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar benthic animals. Data on the diet of P. nana specifically are sparse in the literature; what is inferred follows from size and the general feeding ecology of small potamotrygonids. In captivity, small-bodied live and frozen foods — bloodworm, tubifex, small pieces of prawn, earthworm — are appropriate for a ray of this scale, offered on the substrate or buried just beneath the sand.
Mating
As in all elasmobranchs, reproduction in Plesiotrygon nana involves internal fertilisation. A male approaches and grips the disc or disc margin of a female — often biting to hold position — and inserts one of his paired claspers to transfer sperm directly into the female's reproductive tract. There is no external spawning, no nest, no egg mass deposited in the environment. Fertilisation and the entirety of embryonic development take place inside the female.
Captive breeding of P. nana is poorly documented given the species' rarity in aquaria, but the reproductive anatomy and mode are conserved across Potamotrygonidae. Courtship can be vigorous and physically demanding on the female; bite marks on the disc margin are a common aftermath that heal without lasting damage in healthy animals. There is no pair bond and no parental involvement after mating.
Breeding
Plesiotrygon nana is viviparous, giving birth to live young like all members of its family. After the small yolk reserve of the egg is consumed by the embryo, the developing pups are nourished inside the mother's uterus by a rich secretion of protein and lipids — the 'uterine milk' (histotroph) — produced by highly vascularised extensions of the uterine wall. This mode of nourishment, matrotrophic histotrophy, is characteristic of the family and allows pups to grow substantially before birth.
Litter sizes in the family are generally small; given the diminutive size of P. nana, litters are expected to be modest — likely one to a few pups per gestation — though direct data for this species are absent from the literature. Gestation extends over several months. Pups are born as fully formed, free-living miniature rays and receive no parental care after birth. The slow reproductive tempo — small litters, long gestation, and the late age at sexual maturity typical of elasmobranchs — means the species has limited capacity to recover from population losses, which is a central conservation concern across the family.
In the aquarium
Plesiotrygon nana is an uncommon and specialist aquarium fish. Its small size relative to other freshwater stingrays makes it slightly more tractable than the larger Potamotrygon species, but its requirements are otherwise those of its family: a wide-footprint aquarium with substantial floor area (floor space matters far more than water volume or height for a disc-shaped, benthic animal), a deep bed of soft, fine sand for burying, and water of exceptional quality. It is sensitive to ammonia and to accumulated nitrate in the way that all scaleless, high-metabolism elasmobranchs are; powerful biological filtration and large, frequent water changes are not optional. Parameters should stay in the warm, soft, acidic range consistent with its western Amazon origin.
No salt should be used, and most medications — copper-based treatments especially — are dangerous to elasmobranchs and must be avoided. Tankmates must be peaceful and non-aggressive; fin-nippers or boisterous bottom-dwellers are unsuitable. Feeding on small live and frozen invertebrate foods should be consistent: rays that stop feeding usually indicate a water-quality or stress problem rather than a preference. The venomous tail spine is a genuine hazard — a wound is intensely painful and can require medical attention — so P. nana should not be kept in situations where it may be handled carelessly or where children have unsupervised access to the tank. Captive-bred stock should always be sought in preference to wild-caught animals.
Conservation
Plesiotrygon nana is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, a step up from the Data Deficient placeholder it long carried while the species — described only in 2011 — awaited formal review. Population surveys across its western Amazon range remain rare, and the ecological data needed to fully characterise its status are still limited.
The pressures acting on it are shared across Potamotrygonidae and are well established: the ornamental trade, which affects small and visually distinctive rays disproportionately; incidental killing by fishers who fear the sting; mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining across Amazonia; habitat disruption from dam construction and river engineering; and the irreducible biological vulnerability that comes from a slow reproductive rate — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — that limits recovery from any sustained removal. Although CITES Appendix III controls apply to some Potamotrygon species listed by Brazil and Colombia, Plesiotrygon nana may not be separately listed, and trade controls vary by jurisdiction. Brazil restricts export of wild-caught freshwater rays more broadly. The appropriate response for aquarists is to source only captive-bred individuals, demand documentation of legal origin, and support research that can refine the current Near Threatened assessment as more data become available.
