Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon albimaculata was described by Carvalho in 2016, with the original description published in Zootaxa (volume 4167). It is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for its valid name.
Potamotrygonidae are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is built from cartilage rather than bone, making them close relatives of the sharks and the marine rays — not bony fish. The family invaded South American fresh water, probably from the Pacific margin, during the Miocene, and has been landlocked in Amazonian and adjacent river systems ever since. Potamotrygon is the largest and most diverse genus of the family.
The species epithet albimaculata is Latin for 'white-spotted' (albi = white; maculata = spotted), referring directly to the diagnostic white-spot pattern on the dorsal disc. The species is sometimes called the Tapajós river stingray in the aquarium trade, reflecting both its basin-endemic range and the white-spot pattern that distinguishes it from its congeners.
Morphology
Potamotrygon albimaculata has the characteristic body plan of its family: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc, dorsoventrally flattened for benthic life, with the eyes and the paired spiracles positioned on the dorsal surface. The spiracles — paired openings behind the eyes — draw water for respiration when the animal is lying on or buried in the substrate, bypassing the ventrally placed mouth and gill slits. The disc reaches a maximum width of approximately 19.5 in; the total length, including the tail, is considerably greater (up to around 31 in total length has been noted).
The diagnostic colouration is a blackish-brown to dark-brown dorsal disc covered with numerous small, evenly-spaced whitish spots and faint ocelli. Juveniles show a reticulated pattern that gives way to the spot pattern as the animal matures; neonates are 4–4.5 in total length at birth and roughly 4 in in disc width. The tail bears multiple rows of thorns on its dorsal and lateral surfaces, as well as one or more serrated venomous spines near the base — modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue that are periodically shed and regrown. The skin as a whole is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles rather than scales. Males are identified by a pair of claspers — rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner margins of the pelvic fins, which are broadly rounded in this species.
Habitat
Potamotrygon albimaculata is a narrow-range endemic of the Rio Tapajós basin in Brazil, encompassing the upper and middle Tapajós and the Teles Pires River and its tributaries, in the states of Amazonas, Pará, and Mato Grosso. It is not recorded from the broader Amazon mainstem or other drainage systems.
The Tapajós is a clear-water river flowing off the Brazilian Central Plateau — relatively transparent, with lower sediment load than the turbid white-water Amazon mainstem, and typically soft and mildly acidic. Potamotrygon albimaculata is benthopelagic: it lives and feeds on or near the substrate of sandy and sediment-floored channels. Available accounts suggest a diel pattern, with animals resting in deeper central-channel areas by day and moving to shallow shore margins to forage at night, a pattern also observed in related river stingrays. Like all Potamotrygonidae it breathes through its spiracles while lying on the bottom, allowing it to rest buried without suffocating.
Feeding
Potamotrygon albimaculata is a benthic carnivore. It hunts bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small vertebrates, as is typical across Potamotrygon, though detailed stomach-content data for this species are limited. River stingrays locate buried and cryptic prey using the ampullae of Lorenzini — electro-sensory pores distributed across the ventral surface of the disc that detect the faint electrical fields produced by living animals — and pin prey against the substrate with the disc before working it back to the crushing tooth-plates in the mouth.
In captivity, river stingrays of this genus accept a variety of meaty foods presented on or near the bottom: earthworms, prawn, mussel, squid, and other whole frozen and fresh invertebrates. Feeding best occurs in low light or at night, consistent with the inferred diel activity pattern in the wild. Like other potamotrygonids, albimaculata is a high-metabolic, heavy-feeding animal that produces a correspondingly large waste load — a direct driver of its high water-quality requirements.
Mating
River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. Male Potamotrygon approach a female, grip the margin of her disc with the mouth, and insert one of the paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. Courtship can be physically demanding and males often leave bite marks on the female's disc margin; these typically heal. No external eggs are produced and there is no spawning site, nest, or territory involved in reproduction.
Sexual dimorphism aids identification: males are smaller on average and bear the paired claspers on the inner pelvic-fin margins, whereas females grow larger and lack claspers. In captivity, Potamotrygon can breed in large aquaria, though P. albimaculata is little documented in this context and its specific courtship cues and seasonality in the Tapajós are not well known.
Breeding
Potamotrygon albimaculata is viviparous — it gives birth to live young. After internal fertilisation, the small egg yolk is quickly exhausted and the developing embryos are nourished inside the uterus by a protein- and fat-rich secretion called histotroph, or 'uterine milk', produced by specialised projections of the uterine wall. The embryos absorb this secretion directly, allowing them to grow substantially before birth. This mode of reproduction is termed matrotrophic histotrophy and is uniform across the Potamotrygonidae.
Litter size is small — typically two pups, with a recorded maximum of four — reflecting the slow reproductive rate shared by all river stingrays. Neonates are born at around 4–4.5 in total length (approximately 4 in disc width), as fully-formed, independent miniature rays capable of feeding shortly after birth. There is no parental care after birth. The combination of small litters, an extended uterine gestation of several months, and late sexual maturity means that populations of P. albimaculata can recover only slowly from harvest or mortality pressure.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon albimaculata is occasionally encountered in the specialist freshwater stingray trade, but it is poorly documented in captivity and is not a beginner's fish by any measure. An adult Tapajós ray requires a wide-footprint aquarium of very large dimensions — floor area matters far more than water column height, and a tank measured in square metres, with a length and width several times the disc diameter, is the minimum practical housing for an adult. The substrate must be deep, fine sand: river stingrays bury, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate will abrade the delicate underside of the disc.
Water quality requirements are severe. Potamotrygon are scaleless — their skin is covered in denticles, not scales — and they are acutely sensitive to elevated ammonia and to accumulated nitrate; the high food intake that a ray requires generates large waste loads, demanding powerful biological and mechanical filtration combined with large, frequent water changes. No salt should ever be added. River stingrays are also sensitive to many medications — copper-based treatments are dangerous — and must not be housed with fin-nippers or aggressive bottom dwellers. The venomous tail spine is capable of causing an intensely painful and medically serious injury in humans; these fish are unsuitable where children have unsupervised access, and a number of jurisdictions restrict or license their keeping. Captive-bred animals from reputable specialists are strongly preferred over wild-caught stock.
Conservation
Potamotrygon albimaculata has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it is a species of limited known range described only in 2016, and population data remain thin. Its narrow endemism to the Tapajós–Teles Pires basin in Brazil is itself a conservation concern: a species confined to a single river system has no refuge if that system is degraded.
The pressures facing P. albimaculata are those common to the whole family, scaled against a restricted range. The ornamental trade targets visually striking new Potamotrygon, and a freshly described white-spotted ray from a productive collecting basin is precisely the kind of animal that attracts collection pressure before any population data exist. River stingrays are also killed incidentally and intentionally because of the sting, and taken for food and skins. The Tapajós basin has experienced significant development pressure including hydropower projects (the São Manoel dam on the Teles Pires was completed in 2018) and mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining. The slow reproduction of the species — small litters of one to four pups, long gestation, late maturity — means it is poorly placed to sustain any elevated mortality. Sound baseline survey work, regulated collecting quotas if any trade is permitted, and captive-breeding development are the priorities for this recently described, poorly documented fish.
