Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma feconat was described in 2015 by Uwe Römer, David Patricio Soares, Carmen Rosa García Dávila, Fabrice Duponchelle, Jean-François Renno and Ingo Hahn. Their paper in Vertebrate Zoology (vol. 65, no. 3) re-described Apistogramma payaminonis and named two new species, Apistogramma feconat and Apistogramma wolli. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid, with the holotype catalogued as MUSM 43066 at the Museo de Historia Natural in Lima. The type came from the headwaters of a small right-bank forest stream feeding the Río Pucacuro, about 6 mi above that river's confluence with the Río Tigre, in Departamento Loreto, Peru (roughly 75°02′W, 03°14′S), just outside the Zona Reservada Pucacuro. The whole species was described from only four specimens.
The genus name comes from Greek (apisto, "uncertain," plus gramma, "marking"), usually read as a nod to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line of these fishes. The epithet is the unusual part. Rather than a descriptive Latin word, feconat is a noun in apposition built from the acronym of the Federación de Comunidades Nativas del Tigre (FECONAT), which the authors honored for its campaign to protect indigenous lands and waters in the Tigre basin from industry. ETYFish and FishBase both confirm the name is an organisation's acronym, not a person or a place. Before it had a scientific name the fish moved through the hobby as Apistogramma sp. "Zwilling" / "Twin," and FishBase carries the book-name Twin dwarf cichlid. It sits in the subfamily Geophaginae and, following Mike Wise's working classification on apistogramma.com, in the broad regani lineage within the nijsseni group — a tight cluster of small, strongly dichromatic dwarfs from western Amazonian blackwaters whose females develop a bold lateral blotch in brood dress.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by Apistogramma standards. The describers record males to about 1.5 in standard length and females to roughly 1.5 in, and FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in SL. The meristics are those of a typical small Apistogramma: 15–17 dorsal spines and 6–7 soft rays, 3 anal spines and 6–7 soft rays, and about 24 vertebrae. The body is moderately high-backed, laterally compressed and modestly elongate, and the sexes look strikingly different.
An adult male carries a fairly large yellow-to-orange head over a body that flushes metallic blue or pink, with slightly thickened grey lips. His dorsal fin is bluish or pink with slightly drawn-out, serrated membrane tips edged in yellow; the rounded caudal fin shows a bright orange-to-red submarginal band set off by a black margin, and a large rhombic spot marks the caudal base. Females are built around a single large lateral blotch roughly half the body's height, plus a broad cheek stripe, nape, pectoral and small chin spots, and a squarish throat spot kept distinct from a broad mid-ventral stripe that runs onto the anal-fin edge. That female ventral-spot pattern is one of the combination characters the authors used to separate Apistogramma feconat from the other nijsseni-group dwarfs of the region.
Habitat
Apistogramma feconat is a narrow-range endemic of the Río Tigre drainage in Peru. Every confirmed collection comes from Tigre tributaries in Loreto, in and around the Pucacuro system northwest of Intuto — part of the broad western Amazon basin between the Marañón and the Napo. The fish lives in small clear- or blackwater forest streams shaded by intact primary rainforest, where leaf litter and submerged deadwood are the only real cover and the bottom is the region's characteristic red or yellow latosol clay.
The in-situ water is soft, acidic and strikingly dilute, and the fish keeps to a shallow leaf-litter band only a metre or so deep. Measurements from the Río Tigre/Pucacuro trip that yielded the species ran a pH of roughly 4.5 to 5.8 (FishBase carries 5.8 as the lower bound), a conductivity of only about 11–44 µS/cm, and temperatures of about 77–81 °F (77–81 °F). After heavy rain the chemistry could shift sharply and visibility drop to almost nothing. Much of the known range falls inside the Zona Reservada Pucacuro, a protected national reserve. Several other Apistogramma occur in the wider Río Tigre system, but there is no evidence that Apistogramma feconat overlaps in distribution with its close relatives.
Feeding
No dedicated field study of this species' feeding has been published, so its diet is read from its body plan and from the genus as a whole rather than measured directly. Apistogramma are micropredators of the leaf-litter zone — small, bottom-oriented sift-and-pick feeders that take aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other tiny invertebrates winnowed from detritus and the substrate. FishBase places Apistogramma feconat at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, in keeping with that small-carnivore role.
In its forest streams the species shares the litter with at least one other, still-undescribed Apistogramma and with the pencilfish Nannostomus mortenthaleri. As a dwarf cichlid it sits on the lower rungs of the food web: a consumer of invertebrates and, in turn, prey for larger fish, with its eggs and fry vulnerable to almost anything that can fit them in its mouth. The honest summary is that its wild trophic ecology remains poorly known — the describing authors flagged its field biology as needing intensive further research.
Mating
Behavioral data for Apistogramma feconat come almost entirely from aquarium study under its old hobby name, filled out by what the nijsseni group does in general. Like others in that group it is harem-polygynous rather than pair-bonding or mouthbrooding: a dominant, larger, more colorful male holds a territory that overlaps the smaller home ranges of several females, courting and spawning with each in turn. The strong dichromatism — a blue-and-orange male against a blotched, cryptic female — is exactly the signaling kit this system runs on, the male advertising while the females stay tucked into cover.
Mike Wise, the long-standing authority on the genus at apistogramma.com, notes that Apistogramma feconat (sp. "Zwilling") "has occurred many times in the past" in captivity but is "not an easy fish to breed," with wild-caught stock demanding in its water values. That profile is echoed across the nijsseni group, where soft, acidic water and selective pair-bonding are repeatedly cited as prerequisites for a male and female to settle and spawn at all. Females hold and defend small territories around a chosen cave while the male patrols the larger surrounding area and drives off rivals. Because the fish is now rarely imported, much recent hobby discussion is about its scarcity rather than fresh observations of courtship.
Breeding
Apistogramma feconat is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with female-led brood care, the reproductive pattern of the whole nijsseni group. A female lays her clutch on the ceiling or wall of a sheltered cavity — a rock crevice, a hollow under wood, or in aquaria a small cave or inverted pot — then takes over sole care of the eggs, wrigglers and free-swimming fry, while the harem male mostly just defends the wider area. The species description illustrates this stage from the wild: a female in the aggressive, high-contrast "defending larvae" dress that is the hallmark of these female-tended dwarfs, leading a brood through the leaf litter.
Direct spawning reports come from captivity (Römer & Pretor 2003; Römer 2006), published under the old hobby name, and they describe a fish that is breedable but exacting. Wild-derived stock needs very soft, acidic water to spawn successfully, and females are not always steady parents — first broods are often lost. Clutch sizes for nijsseni-group dwarfs of this size are modest, typically a few dozen eggs rather than hundreds, but no precise fecundity figure exists for Apistogramma feconat itself, so any count is a genus-typical estimate. As with its relatives, dim light, leaf litter and plenty of cover — enough for a brooding female to keep the male at bay — seem to be what turns a pairing into a surviving brood.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma feconat is a genuinely rare fish in the hobby. It was described only in 2015, and even before that it moved in small numbers under the name sp. "Zwilling" / "Twin" through specialist importers. Mike Wise, whose apistogramma.com classification is the standard reference for the genus, notes it has appeared in captivity but is not an easy fish to breed — the bottom line on accessibility. Anyone keeping it today is almost certainly working from a small lineage of captive-bred stock or a rare wild import, and hands-on experience remains thin, so much of what follows is genus-typical Apistogramma husbandry applied to what is known of this fish's biology rather than species-specific keeper lore. That is worth stating plainly.
Tank: a tank of around 15–20 US gal (roughly 60 × 40 × 14 in) is a workable minimum for one male with one or two females. The fish is tiny — males top out near 1.5 in standard length, females a little smaller — but males are territorial and females need enough distance from one another to avoid chronic stress. Use fine dark sand, then a deep layer of dried deciduous leaf litter (keepers of similar dwarfs use oak or Indian almond widely); the litter is functional cover, not decoration, and it feeds the microfauna these fish pick at while slowly acidifying the water. Add several small caves — coconut-shell halves, ceramic tubes, or unglazed clay pots on their sides — so each female has a secure spawning site and the male can keep his distance once a clutch is laid. Keep the light dim or shade it with floating plants, and keep current minimal.
Water: this is where most keepers of nijsseni-group Apistogramma come unstuck. In-situ readings from the Río Tigre/Pucacuro watershed span pH roughly 4.5–5.8, conductivity about 11–44 µS/cm, and temperatures of about 77–81 °F. A practical target of pH 5.0–6.0 and 77–82 °F matches those figures and is reachable with RO water blended with a little tap and conditioned with peat or blackwater extract. Harder or more alkaline water (above roughly pH 6.5 or 150 µS/cm) does not just dull the fish — it will likely prevent spawning and erode condition over time. Temperature stability matters more than the exact target: this is a shallow forest-stream fish with no experience of seasonal cold, so sudden drops below 73 °F are a real risk.
Tankmates: restraint is wise, and for a breeding setup the honest answer is none — or at most a small school of pencilfish. Nannostomus species are ecologically appropriate (Nannostomus mortenthaleri shares the type locality) and add dither-fish movement without competing for the substrate. Larger cichlids, aggressive barbs, and anything that harasses slow bottom fish have no place here. The harem structure suits one male with one to three females, each given her own cave; a pair can work, but the male may pester a lone female relentlessly. Sexing is easy once the fish settle: males are conspicuously larger, with the blue-to-pink metallic body and ornamented fins; females are smaller and drabber, and turn explosively black-and-yellow when guarding a brood.
Common mistakes: treating it as a beginner's Apistogramma, when it is not; trying to breed it in hard or neutral water and concluding the fish are infertile, when the chemistry is the problem; understocking cover, so a female without adequate caves will not spawn and may be killed by the male; and — with any rare captive lineage — failing to maintain and share the line. Keepers who produce fry have an informal duty to distribute them rather than let the line die out.
Conservation
Apistogramma feconat has not been formally assessed by the IUCN. A direct search of the Red List returns no record, and FishBase reports it as Not Evaluated under Red List version 2025-2; it carries no CITES or CMS listing either. That blank should not be read as "safe." The describing authors argued plainly that Apistogramma feconat, together with Apistogramma wolli and Apistogramma payaminonis, must be considered potentially endangered because of its very restricted range — for a fish known from a single small corner of one drainage, almost any local change is an outsized risk. They recommended these Loreto endemics be placed on the red-data lists of Peru, Ecuador and eventually the IUCN.
The specific pressure here is industrial, not climatic. The Río Tigre and neighboring Río Corrientes drainages have a documented history of oil-drilling pollution; investigations cited in the description found heavy-metal and (poly)cyclic-hydrocarbon contamination beyond legal limits in parts of these basins, and the Peruvian government declared large areas of Loreto — the Tigre region included — an environmental emergency, with a restoration plan promised. Because Apistogramma are laboratory-confirmed to be acutely sensitive to heavy metals and aromatic hydrocarbons, a narrow-range blackwater endemic sitting downstream of oil infrastructure is squarely exposed. Set against the wider Amazon, this is the familiar Neotropical-cichlid picture from the regional literature (Kullander's 2003 checklist of South American freshwater fishes; Lowe-McConnell 1991): most such species are unevaluated or Least Concern and threatened by ornamental collection, deforestation, mining and hydrocarbon pollution rather than outright collapse. For Apistogramma feconat the honest framing is that the species is unassessed and probably not collapsing, but its tiny clearwater-to-blackwater range lies inside a basin under real and ongoing strain — the very strain its namesake federation exists to fight.
