Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina pardus was described in 2014 by Jessica H. Arbour, Ramiro E. Barriga Salazar and Hernán López-Fernández, in Copeia (2014, no. 1, pages 79–86), from twelve specimens netted back in 1989 in the Río Danta, a small tributary of the Río Shionoyacu in the upper Río Tigre drainage of Pastaza Province, Ecuador, at roughly 656 ft elevation (1°59′S, 76°52′W). The holotype is held at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Quito under register MEPN 11159, with paratypes split between MEPN (MEPN 11651, eight fish) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM 94028, three fish). The Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid and places the species in the Marañón drainage of the western Amazon basin, spanning Ecuador into Peru — the Río Tigre being one of the Marañón's left-bank tributaries. The genus Bujurquina was erected by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986 to hold an assemblage of biparentally custodial, delayed-mouthbrooding acaras that had long been lumped into Aequidens; the name is Kullander's adaptation of "bujurqui" (or "bufurque"), a vernacular Peruvian word for these cichlids. The same Copeia paper supplied a full key to the genus, which then held around eighteen described species. Bujurquina is now understood to be the most species-rich and widely distributed cichlid genus of the western Amazon, and an active area of revision: molecular and morphological work by Říčan and colleagues (2022–2023) has shown that Ecuador alone harbours many more lineages than the two endemics (Bujurquina zamorensis and Bujurquina pardus) long recognised there, with most of that diversity still formally undescribed. The taxonomy of the genus is therefore unsettled, and several "location" forms in the hobby will likely collapse into fewer species — or be split into more — as that work proceeds.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: the type series tops out at about 3 in in standard length (snout to tail base), so a mature adult is a palm-sized fish, in line with its modest-sized congeners. The body is the typical laterally compressed, moderately deep acara shape, with a fin count of XIII–XIV dorsal spines and 9–10 soft rays, and three anal spines over eight soft rays. Coloration is the diagnostic story. Against a base ground broken by the usual Bujurquina dark lateral band — which in this species runs from behind the eye all the way to the upper edge of the caudal peduncle, rather than stopping at the soft-dorsal base as in many relatives — the flanks carry rows of small, square or tapered blackish-brown spots, one sitting at the overlap of each scale base and the scale ahead of it. That "pardus-type" spotting is unique in the genus and gives the fish both its name and its readiest field mark. Two further features pin the identification: the dorsal-fin lappets (the small flaps at the spine tips) are tipped whitish and translucent rather than black, and the spinous part of the dorsal fin is itself lightly spotted. The pectoral fins are short, under about a third of the body length. The describers separated it from its closest look-alike, Bujurquina huallagae, by these white lappet margins, a strongly curved (rather than straight) suborbital stripe, an unbroken nape bar, and faint cheek striping in place of dark cheek spots. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for Bujurquina pardus specifically, and the type series gives no breakdown of male versus female features; by the pattern that runs through the genus, the expectation is that males grow somewhat larger and develop more produced (often filamentous) trailing edges on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins, while ripe females are rounder-bellied — but for this species that remains an inference, not a recorded fact.
Habitat
Bujurquina pardus is a foothill-stream fish of the Andean piedmont where the western headwaters of the Amazon gather. The type and only well-documented locality, the Río Danta, was a whitewater (turbid, sediment-laden) stream with a bed of sand and silt, a comparatively brisk current, little aquatic vegetation, and intact primary forest crowding both banks; the type series was seined from the middle of the flow at a depth of about 4 ft, at roughly 656 ft above sea level. The few in-situ chemistry figures carried for the species are spare — a pH of at least 6.4 and a water temperature of at least 75 °F — which fit the soft, slightly acidic, warm-but-not-hot profile of a shaded equatorial forest stream draining young Andean substrate. This places the species among the lowland-to-piedmont members of the genus; Bujurquina as a whole splits ecologically into streamlined, shallower-bodied forms living in clear, fast Andean foothill water and deeper-bodied forms of the slower lowlands, and Bujurquina pardus sits toward the foothill end of that gradient. Its recorded range is narrow — the upper Río Tigre and the wider Marañón headwaters straddling the Ecuador–Peru border — and it appears to be a genuinely range-restricted species rather than a widespread one that happens to be under-collected, a pattern the recent genus-wide work attributes to the fragmented, frequently re-plumbed river network of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Feeding
No gut-content or feeding study has been published for Bujurquina pardus, so its diet must be read from its anatomy and from what is known of the genus. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.4 — a mid-level position typical of a small generalist that takes animal prey alongside plant and detrital material. Bujurquina are not specialised sand-sifters in the manner of the eartheaters (Geophagus, Satanoperca) that share their rivers; they are better understood as opportunistic micro-omnivores that pick small invertebrates, insect larvae, and bits of plant and detritus from the substrate and the water column of their forest streams. In a shaded piedmont creek with a sand-and-silt bed and overhanging primary forest, the realistic menu is benthic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, supplemented by allochthonous input — terrestrial insects and organic debris falling from the canopy. Its role in the community is that of a small benthic-to-midwater forager, prey itself for the larger predatory fishes of the system.
Mating
The pre-spawning behaviour of Bujurquina pardus has not been observed and reported in its own right, but the genus has a consistent and well-known reproductive biology that almost certainly applies. Bujurquina are biparental: a male and female form a pair bond and jointly defend a territory through courtship and into brood care, rather than the female going it alone or a dominant male holding a harem. Pair formation is preceded by the mutual displays, lateral spreading and substrate-cleaning common to acaras, and the bonded pair becomes territorial against conspecifics and other fish near the chosen spawning site. By the standards of the larger Neotropical cichlids these are not especially aggressive fish — keepers describe Bujurquina as comparatively peaceable for cichlids of their size — but a spawning pair will still hold and defend a patch of streambed. For Bujurquina pardus specifically, the breeding territory, courtship sequence and any seasonal trigger remain undescribed and are extrapolated here from its congeners; the honest statement is that nobody has yet documented this species pairing up in the wild or in a tank.
Breeding
Bujurquina are the textbook example of delayed (or "larvophilous") mouthbrooding among South American cichlids — the very trait Kullander used to define the genus — and Bujurquina pardus is presumed to share it, though its breeding has not actually been observed. In delayed mouthbrooding the pair first spawns like an ordinary substrate-brooder, laying the eggs on a firm surface; what is distinctive is that they typically choose a movable object, classically a fallen leaf, and will pick the leaf up and shuttle it around the territory in response to disturbance. Both parents tend and fan the eggs on this surface; then, at or shortly after hatching, the adults take the wrigglers into their mouths and brood them orally until the fry are free-swimming, at which point the young are released and guarded as a school. Keepers of related Bujurquina (for example Bujurquina vittata and Bujurquina oenolaemus) report exactly this — eggs laid on a leaf or a small stone that the parents carry about, hatched larvae then mouthbrooded until they swim — and a long-time American Cichlid Association hobbyist recounts breeding fish of this group in the 1970s–80s that "laid eggs on a small rock and moved it around, then mouthbrooded the wigglers until they were swimming." Clutch sizes for these small acaras are modest, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs; precise fecundity, egg size, incubation time and fry-development figures have not been published for Bujurquina pardus and should be treated as unknown. The take-away is firm on mode (biparental delayed mouthbrooder) and honestly blank on the numbers.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina pardus has been collected only once for science and has not entered the aquarium hobby in any meaningful volume; the guidance here is honest inference from genus-typical care of Bujurquina and the broader acara group, with nothing invented. A single adult pair can be housed comfortably in a tank of 25–30 US gal (roughly 35.5 in long), though a grow-out or community arrangement profits from 47 in or more. At 3 in standard length Bujurquina pardus is a genuinely small cichlid — one of the smaller members of its genus — and does not demand the footprint that eartheaters or larger acaras require.
Water chemistry should mirror the soft, slightly acidic conditions of the shaded Andean-piedmont stream where the type specimens were collected: pH 6.4–7.0, temperature 75–82 °F, and low to moderate hardness (softer is safer; aim below about 10 °dH). The upper end of the temperature range is appropriate for a foothill stream fish that is warmer but not as hot as lowland Amazonian tanks. Treat the water with a quality dechlorinator, keep nitrate low through regular partial changes, and avoid the hard, alkaline conditions that suit African cichlids — this is firmly a soft-water western-Amazon species.
Furnish the tank as a forest-stream simulation: a fine sand or smooth small-gravel substrate, several pieces of smooth driftwood to break sight-lines, and a layer of dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak or beech leaves) on the bottom. The leaf litter serves double duty: it softens the water slightly as it tannins leach out, and more importantly it supplies the pair's preferred spawning surface — Bujurquina pardus, like other Bujurquina, is a delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooder that typically lays its eggs on a movable leaf rather than on a fixed stone. A few smooth, flat stones as an alternative spawning surface are worthwhile. Dim lighting suits the species; floating plants help. Strong filtration is useful for water quality but route the outlet so there is not a powerful midwater current — this is a piedmont-stream fish, not a raging-torrent specialist.
Tankmates should be chosen with care and a realistic assessment of the species' rarity and reproductive biology. Outside of spawning, Bujurquina are described by keepers of related species as comparatively peaceable for New World cichlids — a characteristic that makes a South American community tank workable. Small, non-fin-nipping tetras (Hemigrammus, Moenkhausia), pencilfish, dwarf corydoras or smaller Corydoras species, and small loricariids all sit well alongside a pair; peaceful, similarly-sized acaras can be mixed with caution in a large enough tank, though a breeding pair will evict any fish that ventures near the spawning site. Avoid large, aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, and small fish thin enough to be eaten. Because this species is rare in captivity and well-documented captive breeding is absent from the literature, keeping it as a dedicated species pair rather than in a mixed community is the most prudent approach for anyone who obtains it.
Breeding follows the genus template (see Breeding section): the pair lays eggs on a leaf, may pick up and relocate the leaf in response to disturbance, then mouthbroods the hatched wrigglers until the fry are free-swimming. The commonest keeper mistakes with Bujurquina in general are overfeeding leading to water-quality crashes; failing to provide a suitable movable spawning surface (a large dried leaf in the tank is the simplest fix); disturbing or net-chasing the breeding pair, which causes the adults to swallow or abandon the brood; and housing the pair with fish aggressive enough to prevent natural pair-bonding. A conditioned pair fed varied live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, artemia) against a diet of quality dried food will be best placed to breed; fry, once free-swimming, take nauplii and microworms. Overall difficulty is intermediate for someone familiar with soft-water South American cichlids, though the species' scarcity means most practical experience must be borrowed from related Bujurquina rather than directly from this fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina pardus as Data Deficient (assessed 9 October 2014 by Pablo Arguello of the Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador). Data Deficient is not a clean bill of health — it means there is simply too little information on the species' range, population and threats to judge its risk of extinction, which for a fish known mainly from a single 1989 collection in one small stream is an honest verdict. The same narrow-endemic profile that makes it hard to assess is also what would make it vulnerable: a species confined to the upper Río Tigre and the surrounding Marañón headwaters has no large range to buffer it, so any localized pressure on those particular streams counts for a great deal. The western Amazon piedmont of Ecuador and northern Peru is under exactly the kinds of pressure that bear on a small forest-stream fish — deforestation and the sedimentation that follows it, road-building, agricultural runoff, and oil and mining activity in the Amazonian provinces, all of which degrade the clear-to-whitewater, forest-shaded habitat this genus depends on. None of these has been documented as a specific, measured threat to Bujurquina pardus, and it carries no CITES or other trade listing; it is not a fish of the aquarium trade in any volume, partly because it is so easily confused with its congeners. The realistic conservation statement is that its status is genuinely unknown, that its small range is its chief vulnerability, and that resolving the unsettled taxonomy of Ecuadorian Bujurquina is a prerequisite to assessing any of these fish properly.
