Hybridization watchi

Bujurquina ortegai is a small, soberly coloured acara-type cichlid from the Andean foothill streams of northern Peru, known only from the Río Mayo and the wider Huallaga drainage. It belongs to a genus of biparental "delayed" mouthbrooders: rather than carrying eggs from the moment they are laid, a Bujurquina pair spawns on a leaf, guards it on the bottom, and only takes the brood into their mouths once the larvae hatch — a hybrid of substrate-spawning and mouthbrooding found in almost no other Neotropical cichlids. It is one of fourteen Peruvian species Sven Kullander sorted out in a single 1986 monograph, and its name honours the Peruvian ichthyologist who helped make that work possible.

Taxonomy & naming

Bujurquina ortegai was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986, in his monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru. That single work erected the genus Bujurquina itself — built to hold an assemblage of biparentally custodial, primitively ("delayed") mouthbrooding acaras that had previously been lumped into the catch-all genus Aequidens — and described thirteen new species within it in one stroke, of which ortegai is one. The type species of the genus is Bujurquina moriorum, also a Kullander 1986 name. The holotype of Bujurquina ortegai (MHNG 2205.27, in the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève) was collected at Puerto Juan Antonio near Moyobamba, in the Río Mayo of the Río Huallaga drainage, Departamento San Martín, Peru; several paratypes are held in Geneva and at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid and places the genus in subfamily Cichlinae (FishBase variously files Bujurquina under Cichlasomatinae, reflecting unsettled higher-level cichlid classification rather than any doubt about the species). The specific epithet honours Dr Hernán Ortega Torres, the Peruvian ichthyologist, professor and fish-collection curator at the Museo de Historia Natural of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, whose fieldwork underpinned much of the Peruvian cichlid record. Note that ortegai here is not to be confused with Apistogramma ortegai Britto, Lima & Hidalgo, 2007 — a different dwarf cichlid that also honours Ortega — nor with the unrelated Corydoras-group catfish Hoplisoma ortegai; the shared epithet is a coincidence of a much-honoured collector. Within the genus, ortegai sits among the foothill ("highland") species of the central western Amazon and is closely allied to its Huallaga-drainage neighbour Bujurquina huallagae; a 2023 morphometric study found the two so similar that body-shape measurements alone cannot reliably separate them, and a colour-pattern key (Loiselle 1990, after Kullander) distinguishes ortegai chiefly by a well-developed suborbital band that curves to the rear in both juveniles and adults.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: the largest measured specimen is about 4.5 in in standard length (Kullander 1986), which makes ortegai a modest fish even by acara standards and well short of a hand-span. The body is the typical Bujurquina shape — a moderately deep, laterally compressed "acara" outline with a rounded head, continuous dorsal fin, and (in males) the soft dorsal, anal and caudal lobes drawn out into short filaments or streamers. Colour is undramatic: olive-brown to greyish flanks, often with faint vertical barring and a dark mid-lateral spot, over which iridescent green or blue flecks may appear on the cheek and gill cover in good condition. As the genus goes, none of these are showy fish. The single most useful field mark for ortegai is on the face — a clear suborbital (cheek) stripe running down and back from below the eye that curves toward the rear and persists into adulthood, where in the closely similar Bujurquina apoparuana the equivalent stripe is straight in juveniles and fades to a mere preopercular spot, or vanishes, in adults. Sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina is real but modest and has not been documented in detail for ortegai specifically; following the genus pattern, males grow somewhat larger and carry the longer fin filaments and trailing caudal streamers, while ripe females are rounder-bodied — a genus-typical reading flagged as such, since no ortegai-specific dimorphism study exists.

Habitat

Bujurquina ortegai is a narrow-range foothill endemic, recorded only from Peru — specifically the Río Mayo basin within the Río Huallaga drainage of the upper (western) Amazon, in Departamento San Martín. It is one of the genus's "highland" or foothill species rather than a lowland fish: a 2023 study of Bujurquina ecomorphology places the foothill band of species generally between about 400 and 1,656 ft elevation, in streams and small rivers that run permanently and are seasonally clear, with firmer beds and more current than the muddy, slow lowland waters where other Bujurquina live. The two zones hold different faunas, and foothill species like ortegai are typically not found down in the adjacent lowlands. No in-situ water chemistry has been published for ortegai itself; the values given here are defensible foothill-clearwater figures inferred from that habitat and from how the genus is kept — flagged as such rather than measured. Such streams are warm but, being at altitude, run cooler than the lowland Amazon — broadly in the mid-20s Celsius — with soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral water (pH roughly 6.5–7.5) and shallow, well-oxygenated, flowing channels a metre or two deep. Because the genus is highly philopatric and shows fine-scale endemism, ortegai's apparent restriction to one foothill drainage is probably real biology, not just under-collecting — though the latter cannot be ruled out for so remote an area.

Feeding

No gut-content or feeding study has been published for Bujurquina ortegai, so its diet must be read from its body plan, its habitat and its relatives. Bujurquina are small, generalist micro-carnivores and omnivores — acaras that pick small invertebrates, insect larvae and other benthic prey from the substrate and leaf litter and take some plant and detrital material alongside. In a foothill stream this means working the bottom and the margins for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and whatever drifts in. FishBase carries only a modelled trophic-level estimate of about 3.5 (with wide error), generated from body size and the trophic levels of close relatives rather than from stomach data, so it should be treated as an educated placeholder, not a measurement. In the stream community it is a small mid-level consumer, itself prey for larger predatory fish such as the wolf-fish (Hoplias) and pike cichlids (Crenicichla) that share these waters.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described for ortegai on its own, but Bujurquina across the genus follow a consistent and well-observed pattern, and there is no reason to think ortegai departs from it. The fish form monogamous pairs that jointly hold and defend a spawning territory — a far more peaceable arrangement than the harem or arena systems of many other cichlids. Pairing is preceded by mutual display and the usual cichlid jaw-locking and lateral posturing, after which the bonded pair settles over a chosen site. Crucially, the site of choice in nature is not a rock or a cave but a leaf: pairs select a fallen leaf or a similarly movable surface on the streambed, which becomes both the spawning substrate and, as the following section describes, a portable cradle. Pair bonds in the genus are comparatively stable, and both partners share territorial defence rather than leaving it to one sex — a division of labour that carries through into the unusually cooperative brood care that defines these fish.

Breeding

Bujurquina are biparental "delayed" or larvophile mouthbrooders, and this is the genus's signature — the single most interesting thing about ortegai by inheritance. The pair spawns in the manner of a substrate spawner, laying a clutch of eggs onto a leaf or other detachable surface and guarding it on the bottom. The leaf is the trick: if the parents feel threatened, or if the water drops, they can pick the whole egg-laden leaf up and carry it to a safer or deeper spot — a mobility no cave-spawner has. Hobbyist accounts of the genus report the eggs hatching at roughly 48 hours, at which point one parent (usually the female at first) takes the newly hatched larvae into her mouth; from then on both parents share the carrying, passing mouthfuls of fry back and forth, and continue oral brooding for about a week before the young become too numerous to gather and are simply herded and guarded like an ordinary substrate-spawner's fry. Clutches are small — FishBase's life-history model assumes fecundity well under 1,000 eggs, consistent with a 11-cm fish and with the genus's hands-on care — and parental care is prolonged and shared rather than brief. None of the fine detail (egg counts, timings) has been published for ortegai specifically; the picture here is the consistent, repeatedly reported genus pattern, which keepers describe as reliable across Bujurquina and which is flagged as genus-typical where ortegai's own data are lacking.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina ortegai is rarely seen in the hobby and essentially absent from the ornamental trade; any fish offered under this name will almost certainly have come from a specialist breeder rather than a commercial importer, and husbandry notes here are generalised from the genus. That caveat aside, foothill Bujurquina are not difficult cichlids for a patient keeper who can match their water. A tank of 25–30 US gal is adequate for a pair; a deeper footprint matters more than height, since these are bottom-oriented fish that work the substrate and lower third of the column. The floor should be covered with fine sand rather than gravel, and a layer of dried deciduous or Indian almond leaves is both a natural touch and a functional one — Bujurquina select a fallen leaf as their spawning surface, and having several choices settled on the bottom will encourage natural behaviour. Driftwood and smooth stones can round out the scape, and a tight-fitting lid is advisable since all cichlids jump when stressed.

Water chemistry should track the habitat: soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral water in the range of pH 6.5–7.5, hardness well under 15 °dH (the lower the better for breeding), and temperature 72–82 °F. These are not demanding numbers for a keeper with access to RO water or naturally soft tap water, but ortegai and its foothill relatives come from clear, well-oxygenated sub-Andean streams, so good filtration and regular water changes — 25–30 % weekly — are more important than trying to acidify to blackwater extremes. Stagnant, heavily tinted conditions are for lowland Amazonian species and are not what this fish's stream asks for.

In terms of company, Bujurquina ortegai is a peaceable fish outside of breeding and can be kept with other small, unassertive western-Amazon species — pencilfish, small tetras, armoured catfish in the 2–4 in range, or other small South American cichlids that share its water preferences. What it cannot tolerate is anything large or aggressive enough to outcompete it for food or to harass it persistently. Boisterous tankmates from hard-water setups (Mbuna, Central American cichlids) are chemically and temperamentally mismatched and should never share the tank. During spawning and brood-care periods the pair will defend their leaf and a surrounding territory with real conviction; temporary removal of dither fish is sometimes warranted if aggression escalates.

The leaf-mouthbrooding system is among the most engaging behaviours in Neotropical cichlids and, following the consistent genus pattern, can be achieved in captivity without difficulty once a settled pair forms. The pair will select and clean a leaf, lay a small clutch of adhesive eggs on its surface, and guard the leaf on the bottom — sometimes relocating it if they feel threatened. Hatching occurs at roughly 48 hours (temperature-dependent), after which the larvae are taken into the mouth, initially by the female; within a day or two both parents carry and exchange mouthfuls of wriggling fry, passing them back and forth in a clearly biparental arrangement. Oral brooding continues for approximately a week, after which the free-swimming fry are herded rather than carried. Feed the fry on newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or commercial micro-food from the moment they are free-swimming; the parents will continue to shepherd them for another week or two.

The most common keeper errors with Bujurquina generally are: housing them in water that is too hard or alkaline (above pH 7.5 and 15 °dH they fail to thrive or breed), pairing them with tank-mates large or aggressive enough to prevent the cautious pair-bond from forming, and providing no suitable leaf or flat surface so the pair have nowhere appropriate to spawn. The other pitfall is mistaking the parents' periodic mouthbrooding for illness or mouthing injuries and disturbing the tank, which causes the pair to swallow or abandon the brood. Once a keeper understands that the intermittent disappearance of fry into parental mouths is exactly how the species works, the rest of the care is straightforward.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina ortegai as Data Deficient (assessed 21 April 2014 by Max Hidalgo of UNMSM-MHN) — meaning there is not enough information on its distribution, abundance or threats to assign a category. That is the honest status for a fish known from a single foothill drainage and little studied since its 1986 description; it is neither confirmed to be threatened nor confirmed to be secure. It has no CITES listing and is of negligible commercial interest. Bujurquina hold little place in the ornamental trade — they are sober-coloured and rarely exported — and ortegai in particular comes from the Huallaga/Mayo headwaters in San Martín, well away from the Iquitos export hubs, so collection pressure is essentially nil. The real questions are habitat ones. A narrow-range foothill endemic is, by definition, exposed to anything that degrades its one drainage: the San Martín region of northern Peru has seen substantial deforestation and agricultural expansion, and Andean and sub-Andean streams are sensitive to sedimentation, water abstraction and pollution in ways the vast lowland Amazon is not. A genuinely small-range, philopatric species cannot simply recolonise from elsewhere if its home stream is altered. Nothing specific is documented as harming ortegai today, but its Data Deficient status is best read not as reassurance but as a gap — the species needs basic survey work before anyone can say whether it is safe.
