Taxonomy & naming
The fish was described by Geoffrey Fryer in 1956 in the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines (vol. 53, pp. 81–91), originally as Pseudotropheus minutus, based on specimens collected at Nkata Bay (Nkhata Bay), Lake Nyasa — the lake was still commonly called Lake Nyasa in the scientific literature of that era. The holotype, BMNH 1956.6.4.28, and paratypes BMNH 1956.9.4.2-6 are deposited at the Natural History Museum, London.
For sixty years the species sat quietly in Pseudotropheus, the large catch-all genus that accumulated much of Malawi's rock cichlid diversity. That changed in 2016 when Shaohua Li, Ad Konings, and Jay R. Stauffer Jr. published a revision of the Pseudotropheus elongatus species group in Zootaxa 4168(2):353–381. They erected the new genus Chindongo to accommodate eight species that form a coherent clade centred on the elongatus assemblage, and formally transferred Pseudotropheus minutus into it. The current valid combination is therefore Chindongo minutus (Fryer 1956), recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, and the IUCN Red List. Fryer's original Pseudotropheus minutus persists as a synonym.
The species has no established English common name — it circulates in the trade simply as 'minutus' or occasionally under the locality label 'Nkhata Bay minutus'. Within Lake Malawi's mbuna assemblage it sits in the broader Chindongo clade alongside C. saulosi, Chindongo socolofi, Chindongo bellicosus, Chindongo elongatus, C. longior, and C. ater, a group united by elongate body proportions, bicuspid outer teeth, and a general preference for rocky rubble habitats.
Morphology
Chindongo minutus is, by consensus of every source including its own describer, the smallest mbuna — adult males in the wild seldom exceed about 2 in total length, with females sometimes marginally smaller still. FishBase lists the maximum recorded size as 2.5 in total length; the ETYFish Project notes the type series measured 2–2.5 in TL. Aquarium-reared fish can reach 3 in total length in comfortable conditions.
The body is slender and slightly compressed, with a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth equipped with bicuspid teeth in the outer rows of both jaws — the two cusps of each tooth noticeably larger than the inner-row tricuspid teeth, an adaptation noted by Fryer in the original description and confirmed by the aquainfo.nl species account. This dental arrangement allows the fish to scrape dense algal films from rock surfaces, including the recessed micro-pockets that blunt-toothed species cannot reach.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Territorial males are bright blue to blue-purple, with a series of dark vertical bars running down the flanks; the head and nape often darken to near-black in dominant fish, and the dorsal and anal fins carry a dark margin with occasional pale edging. Females and sub-dominant males are beige to pale brown, with a less-defined pattern that provides effective camouflage against the light-coloured rubble of the shallows. Konings's field notes from Minos Reef (Cichlid Room Companion) put adult females at less than two inches total length, observing that they are small enough to pass through the collection nets used on the Malawian export trade. The coloration pattern at Minos Reef in Mozambique (catalogued in the hobby as Ps. sp. 'minutus mozambique') closely matches Nkhata Bay fish, though whether it is conspecific or a closely related undescribed taxon has not been formally resolved.
Habitat
Chindongo minutus is endemic to Lake Malawi and confined to its western shore, where the IUCN 2018 assessment places the confirmed range from Cape Manulo south to Mundola Point. Within that stretch the species is most abundant at Nkhata Bay, its type locality; Michael K. Oliver's malawi.si account additionally documents it at Lions Cove and as far north as Ruarwe, all on the western Malawian shore. Konings's Cichlid Room Companion article on Minos Reef records what appears to be the same species on the Mozambique shore at Minos Reef and Nkhungu Reef, some 37 mi south-east across the lake — this may extend the species' effective range considerably, though only the Malawian material is formally tied to the described taxon.
The species inhabits the rocky-rubble littoral zone at depths of approximately 7–33 ft, occasionally ranging deeper. This is the intermediate zone between large boulders and open sand: areas of smaller, scattered rocks and pebble-strewn tracts where algal films accumulate and cave microhabitats are abundant. It is not found on open sandy bottoms or in the surge zone of the shallow surge flats, both habitats dominated by other Malawi cichlids.
Lake Malawi's waters are warm, hard and alkaline — characteristics that have remained stable enough over geological time to drive one of the world's most spectacular freshwater radiations. Surface temperatures in the northern and central lake vary seasonally from about 75–82 °F, though the southwest arm warms a degree or two higher during the hot season. pH is typically 7.7–8.6, and total hardness is high (general hardness commonly above 10 dGH). Oxygen and light availability are excellent in the shallow rocky zone where Chindongo minutus lives.
Feeding
The dietary ecology of Chindongo minutus is defined by a single specialisation: it scrapes algae, and specifically the algae that other species cannot reach. Most mbuna are accomplished aufwuchs feeders, grazing the biofilm of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and micro-invertebrates from exposed rock surfaces. What distinguishes Chindongo minutus is that its small body and bicuspid teeth allow it to work crevices and pockets — the re-entrant angles between rocks, undercut surfaces, and micro-cavities — that the wider, heavier teeth of species like Labeotropheus or Metriaclima cannot enter effectively. Both the IUCN species assessment (Konings & Kazembe 2018) and FishBase (citing Konings 2016) describe this foraging niche explicitly: the species feeds on loose aufwuchs 'especially from small pockets in the substrate that are inaccessible to most other species.'
FishBase estimates a trophic level of 2.0 for the species, appropriate for a near-pure herbivore. In practice aufwuchs contains more than algae — the biofilm matrix also traps microscopic invertebrates such as copepods, midge larvae, and small crustaceans; a strict herbivore/omnivore classification for mbuna is therefore somewhat arbitrary. In the aquarium the species accepts spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables, and high-quality cichlid flake with vegetable content; high-protein carnivore foods should be rationed, as over-feeding protein can predispose all mbuna to the metabolic condition known among keepers as 'Malawi bloat.'
Mating
Like all mbuna, Chindongo minutus is polygynous: males hold territories and court any receptive female that enters, without forming lasting pair bonds. Territorial males select a defended site among smaller rocks and pebble-strewn ridges, choosing positions that offer both a visible perch and shelter. Their vivid blue-purple coloration intensifies during the breeding season, and they perform characteristic lateral displays — fins spread, body quivering — to advertise themselves to females and threaten rival males. Even at their small size, territorial males are described as 'quite aggressive among themselves' and willing to defend their patch 'with great vigor' (Konings, CRC Minos Reef article).
Females also maintain loose feeding territories from which they exclude other females — a social arrangement slightly unusual in mbuna, where females are more typically encountered in loose aggregations above the male territories. Konings explicitly notes this at Minos Reef. Non-territorial females and juveniles occupy the margins of the rocky zone or move among the pebble tracts between ridges. Spawning is initiated by a male's courtship display, which draws the female to spawn on a flat or slightly concave surface near the male's cave or beneath a rock overhang.
Breeding
Chindongo minutus is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth immediately after laying and brooding is entirely her responsibility thereafter. Clutch sizes are small, consistent with the species' tiny body: reports from captive breeders place the typical spawn at 10–25 eggs, confirming the broad relationship between mbuna body size and fecundity.
The typical spawning sequence follows the standard haplochromine pattern: the female deposits a small batch of eggs on the substrate in a shallow depression or behind a stone; the male fertilises them while the female picks them up, often triggered by the orange ocelli (egg-spots) on his anal fin, which she approaches as if collecting stray eggs. Incubation in the buccal cavity lasts approximately 18–21 days at Malawi water temperatures. The female does not eat during this period and may be stripped or transferred in aquarium management to a separate tank around day 17–18. Fry are released as free-swimming young capable of taking fine food immediately; maternal care ends at release and the brood disperses to the rubble immediately.
In the aquarium a ratio of one male to three or four females reduces aggression against holding females. The male's small size, compared to typical mbuna, means aggression is somewhat easier to manage, but it remains a real consideration — a single male in a small tank can harass a lone female relentlessly.
In the aquarium
Chindongo minutus is uncommon in the hobby. It is rarely exported from Malawi — the IUCN assessment notes that it is only occasionally collected for the ornamental trade, and Konings has observed that wild females are small enough to pass through the nets typically used in the export fishery, which biases collections toward other, larger mbuna. When available, fish most often appear under the locality label 'Nkhata Bay minutus' or simply as 'minutus', and they command modest interest among specialist mbuna keepers precisely because of their size and niche-feeding biology. Hobbyists who want this species should expect to source it through cichlid clubs, specialist breeders, or the infrequent specialist import rather than the mainstream trade.
Because this is a small mbuna — wild adults rarely exceed 2.5 in total length, aquarium fish occasionally reaching 3 in — a tank of around 47 in in length is a practical minimum for a colony of one male and two or three females, and a 59 in tank gives considerably better outcomes for managing territorial aggression. The aquascape should be built primarily from rockwork: stacked limestone, tufa, or lava rock arranged to create numerous caves, crevices, and visual breaks. The goal is to break sightlines so that a harassed female can always escape a pursuing male. Open sandy bottom between the rock structures is natural; fine aragonite or crushed coral sand maintains the alkaline buffering the species requires and is consistent with the rubble habitat it occupies in the lake. Plants are largely unnecessary and will typically be ignored or uprooted; if included, tough species like Anubias anchored to rock are serviceable.
Water chemistry should match the hard alkaline conditions of Lake Malawi: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and general hardness of 10 dGH or above. Many keepers target 77–81 °F as a comfortable middle range. Soft or acidic water will stress the fish and suppress colour and breeding behaviour over time. Filtration must be strong — mbuna are messy feeders with high protein metabolism relative to their size, and deteriorating nitrates accelerate Malawi bloat. Regular water changes of 25–30 % weekly are standard mbuna practice.
Diet is the single most important husbandry point. As an aufwuchs specialist, Chindongo minutus requires a diet dominated by plant matter: spirulina-based flake or pellets, blanched zucchini or spinach, and quality mbuna-formula foods form the backbone. High-protein carnivore foods — bloodworm, beefheart, high-animal-protein pellets — should be avoided entirely or offered only very sparingly, as they predispose all Malawi mbuna, and the elongate Chindongo group in particular, to Malawi bloat, a metabolic/bacterial condition of the digestive tract that is difficult to treat and often fatal. This is the most common mistake mbuna keepers make: feeding a fish that evolved on near-pure algae the same diet given to a predator.
Tankmate selection requires care. Despite their small size, male Chindongo minutus are described as genuinely aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly shaped fish; they will harass conspecific males and, if the tank lacks sufficient caves, relentlessly pursue females. Mixing with other mbuna of similar size and temperament — other Chindongo species, smaller Pseudotropheus, or similarly sized Cynotilapia — can work in a large, heavily decorated tank, but species that look alike or compete for the same rock crevices are likely to produce chronic stress and injury. Peaceful open-water species or substantially larger cichlids are generally unsuitable co-inhabitants. The recommended ratio for breeding groups is one male to three or four females, which distributes the male's aggression. Because clutch sizes are small (10–25 eggs) and the species is uncommonly available, captive breeding is genuinely valuable for maintaining the hobby population.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chindongo minutus as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018 by Konings & Kazembe; errata version 2019; e.T61171A148675547). The justification is straightforward: the species is found across a reasonably broad stretch of the western Malawian shore, it has no known major widespread threats, and there are no documented population declines. It is occasionally collected for the ornamental fish trade but not at levels considered problematic, and the IUCN listing notes it is 'rarely collected' commercially.
The one threat explicitly flagged in the 2018 assessment is sedimentation: agricultural and forestry effluents carry eroded soil into the lake's nearshore zone, silting up the rocky rubble microhabitats that Chindongo minutus depends on. For a fish that feeds in the interstices between small rocks, fine sediment filling those gaps is directly destructive to its feeding ecology and to the algal community that fuels it. A similar risk applies to shoreline development — human waste and altered drainage around Nkhata Bay and other western-shore settlements could degrade the fish's most productive rocky patches.
Those species-level risks sit inside a lake under broad and accelerating strain. The basin review by Chavula et al. (Journal of Great Lakes Research 49, 2023) found that Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa is experiencing severe adverse impacts from anthropogenic and climatic stressors, including increased sediment and nutrient loading, climate-driven variability, fishery decline, and invasive species. The lake's extraordinary endemic fish diversity, with 800–1,000 species the majority endemic, is increasingly recognised as globally irreplaceable, yet conservation investment has lagged. For Chindongo minutus, assessed Least Concern, there is no current alarm — but the species belongs to a shallow rocky-shore community whose habitat quality is sensitive to exactly the threats the lake-wide literature documents.
