Hybridization watchi

Lugubria ternetzi is a slender pike cichlid restricted to a single river — the Oyapock, which forms the border between French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá. Unlike the lowland, still-water relatives many keepers picture when they hear "pike cichlid," it is a creature of fast water: a rheophilic ambush predator that holds station in sunlit rapids, sheltering behind rocks from the current. Described by J.R. Norman in 1926 and named for the Swiss collector Carl Ternetz, it is among the larger Guiana-Shield pikes, reaching roughly 9.5 in. A 2023 phylogenetic revision moved it to the resurrected genus Lugubria, though it remains universally known to hobbyists and most literature as a Crenicichla.

Taxonomy & naming

Lugubria ternetzi was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1926, in a paper titled 'Descriptions of nine new freshwater fishes from French Guiana and Brazil' (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 9, volume 18). The type locality is the Oyapock River at Saut Cafésoca in French Guiana; the lectotype (BMNH 1926.3.2.860) and two paralectotypes are held at the Natural History Museum in London, with the lectotype designated later by Anthonie Ploeg in his 1986 review of the French Guianan Crenicichla. The species sits within the large South American genus Crenicichla, the pike cichlids — elongate, predatory geophagine cichlids erected by Heckel in 1840. Ploeg's monographic 1991 revision of the genus placed ternetzi in the 'multispinosa' lineage of Guiana-Shield pikes, and he repeatedly noted how closely it resembles its neighbour Crenicichla multispinosa, the two being separable mainly on colour pattern. In 2023, Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids (subtribe Crenicichlina) that split the historically unwieldy Crenicichla into several genera; under that classification this fish becomes Lugubria ternetzi, grouped with the saxatilis-type Guiana pikes. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes have adopted Lugubria, but the change is recent and not yet universal, and the fish remains familiar to aquarists under its long-standing Crenicichla name, which is retained here. There are no junior synonyms; ternetzi has carried a single valid binomial since 1926.

Morphology

Lugubria ternetzi has the classic pike-cichlid body plan: long, cylindrical and torpedo-shaped, with a pointed head, a large terminal mouth, and the dorsal and anal fins set well back so that the fish can lunge forward from cover. Ploeg's 1986 series ranged from about 2–8 in standard length (roughly 2–9.5 in total length), and FishBase gives a maximum of 9.5 in SL, making it one of the larger pikes of the Guianas — Ploeg reported wild fish up to 8 in SL from the Oyapock. Meristically it is a 'high-spine' pike: 23–25 dorsal spines and 13–15 soft dorsal rays, a count it shares with the very similar Crenicichla multispinosa and which sets it apart from the lower-spined saxatilis-group pikes (15–20 spines). It carries a numerous-scaled flank (about 90–100 scale rows below the lateral lines). In colour it is comparatively plain. Preserved and live fish show a dark lateral band running from the tip of the lower jaw back to the end of the caudal fin, fading on the tail, plus a weak suborbital (cheek) stripe. Crucially for telling it from its look-alikes, Lugubria ternetzi lacks the scattered white spots, lacks a distinct caudal-fin spot (ocellus), and lacks a strong humeral blotch — features that Crenicichla multispinosa does carry. Sexual dimorphism follows the pike norm: ripe females become noticeably rounder and deeper-bodied, and in this species females develop pale white bands in the caudal fin that males do not show, a useful sexing cue. Males tend to grow somewhat larger and longer-finned. Juveniles of Lugubria ternetzi share a common cryptic pattern with sympatric young Crenicichla johanna, which complicated early identifications.

Habitat

This is a narrow-range endemic of the Oyapock (Oyapok / Oiapoque) River drainage, the river that marks the frontier between French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá; it is recorded from both banks and is not known from any other basin. The Oyapock rises on the Guiana Shield and runs through tropical moist forest to the Atlantic, and within the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World scheme it lies in the 'Guianas' ecoregion (a region of upland Shield rivers with high fish endemism, nearly 40 percent of species restricted to it). Lugubria ternetzi is a rheophile — a rapids specialist. FishBase, drawing on the French Guiana fish atlas (Keith, Le Bail & Planquette), describes it living in the zones of rapids where it finds shelter against the back-currents behind rocks, in shallow, brightly illuminated water. Its companions in that biotope are themselves rapids-adapted fishes: the armoured loricariid catfishes Lasiancistrus longispinis, Labeobarbus brevispinis and Ctenoloricaria fowleri, and the characins Bryconops cyrtogaster and Astyanax leopoldi. The water of these clear Shield rivers is warm, soft and acidic to near-neutral; published in-situ chemistry specific to Lugubria ternetzi is sparse, but Guiana-Shield rapids of this type generally run about pH 6.0–7.0 and 75–84 °F over rock and gravel, with low mineral content. Depth in its preferred rapids habitat is shallow — on the order of 0–7 ft — reflecting the fish's habit of holding behind boulders in flowing, sunlit shallows rather than in deep pools.

Feeding

Like nearly all pike cichlids, Lugubria ternetzi is a carnivorous lurking predator. The elongate body, large protrusible mouth and rearward-set fins are the toolkit of an ambush hunter that holds still behind structure and accelerates onto prey with a sudden lunge. FishBase places the genus high on the food web, and for this species estimates a trophic level near 3.8 — squarely predatory. In a rocky rapids environment the diet of a pike this size is built from whatever small animals share the fast water: smaller fishes, shrimp and other crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae and other benthic invertebrates picked from among and behind the rocks. No published gut-content study targets Lugubria ternetzi specifically, so the dietary picture is inferred from its morphology, its rheophilic congeners, and the genus as a whole; within its rapids community it functions as one of the resident mid-level piscivore-invertivores, an ambush predator on the smaller rheophilic fishes and invertebrates it shares the current with.

Mating

No field study has documented courtship or pair formation in Lugubria ternetzi, and what can be said is drawn from the consistent reproductive biology of the genus. Pike cichlids are monogamous and form pair bonds, with the two fish jointly establishing and defending a territory anchored on a spawning cave or crevice. In a rapids-dwelling pike, the obvious nest sites are the rock crevices, undercut boulders and cavities that already provide the adults their daytime shelter from the current. Pairing in Crenicichla is typically preceded by a period of mutual assessment and can be fraught — sexes must be well matched in size and readiness, as an unreceptive or mismatched partner is at real risk from the other. Females advertise readiness through their swelling, rounder bodies and, in this species, the developing white caudal banding. Territoriality intensifies sharply around spawning, the pair driving other fishes away from the chosen cavity; outside the breeding period these pikes are more solitary, each holding its own foraging station among the rocks.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in the wild for Lugubria ternetzi, and the species is rare in the hobby, so no detailed captive spawning account is on record. Its reproductive mode can nonetheless be stated with confidence from the genus: pike cichlids are biparental cave (substrate) spawners. The female attaches her eggs to the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — under a rock, in a crevice, or on the inner surface of a cave — and the pair divides labour in the typical pike manner, the female tending, cleaning and fanning the clutch while the male patrols and defends the wider territory. Many Crenicichla attach their eggs by short filamentous stalks to the cave ceiling. After the eggs hatch, the larvae are moved to pits and guarded as a free-swimming school, with both parents shepherding the fry and herding them back to cover at any disturbance; parental care is prolonged and diligent, as it is across the genus. Clutch size for Lugubria ternetzi has not been counted, but congeneric pikes of comparable size typically lay on the order of 100–400 eggs per spawning — a genus-typical figure offered here as a guide rather than a measured value for this species. As with other pikes, conditioning on rich meaty foods and the warm, soft water of the spawning season are the presumed triggers.

In the aquarium

Lugubria ternetzi is seldom seen in the aquarium trade. It has no real commercial fishery and is not a regularly exported ornamental, so most keepers will never encounter it; the husbandry guidance here is therefore extrapolated from experience with comparable medium-to-large rheophilic pike cichlids rather than from a body of dedicated reports on this species.

A fish that reaches around 9.5 in and comes from flowing water needs a long tank with a generous footprint — realistically 59 in or more in length, on the order of 105 US gal for a single adult or a compatible pair, with more room strongly preferred for a pair so a harried mate can escape. Because this is a rapids fish rather than a lowland still-water pike, it rewards genuine current: strong filtration and powerheads to create oxygen-rich, briskly moving water are appropriate, the opposite of the calm setup many cichlids want. Aquascape with the biotope in mind — a substrate of sand and water-worn gravel, and above all plenty of rockwork piled into caves, crevices and undercut shelters, since these are simultaneously the fish's daytime refuge and its spawning sites. Driftwood and a few sturdy plants help break sightlines. Subdued to moderate lighting suits it, though in nature it occupies brightly lit shallows.

Water should be warm and on the soft, slightly acidic to neutral side, mirroring the clear Guiana-Shield rivers it comes from: roughly 75–84 °F and pH about 6.0–7.5, kept clean and well oxygenated. Pike cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating water, so large, regular water changes and over-filtration are the rule. Feeding is straightforward for a committed predator — it will take meaty foods such as earthworms, prawn and mussel pieces, and frozen items, and most pikes can be weaned onto good-quality sinking carnivore pellets. Live fish should not be relied on as a staple; they are unnecessary nutritionally and carry disease risk.

Temperament is the usual pike trade-off: predatory toward anything small enough to be swallowed, and territorial — especially around a cave or a spawn — but not gratuitously belligerent toward fishes too large to eat. Suitable tankmates are robust, similarly sized characins, larger catfishes and other fast-water fishes that occupy different zones of the tank; small tetras and dwarf cichlids will simply be eaten. The most delicate relationship is between the pikes themselves: pairing is risky and a mismatched or unready partner can be killed, so a large tank, broken sightlines, and a ready means to separate the fish are sensible precautions. This is an experienced keeper's fish, both for its size and current requirements and for its scarcity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria ternetzi (under that name) as Least Concern, assessed on 27 December 2020 by D.C. Taphorn and D. Rodríguez-Olarte and published in the 2022 assessment. The listing reflects that, although the species is a single-river endemic, the Oyapock drainage is largely intact and the fish faces no identified species-specific threat; it carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of no fisheries interest. That said, a narrow range is itself a vulnerability: a species confined to one trans-boundary river has limited buffer against basin-scale change. The Oyapock and the wider Guiana Shield are comparatively well preserved, but illegal gold mining is a documented and growing pressure across French Guiana and Amapá, bringing sediment loads and mercury contamination to Shield rivers, and rapids specialists like Lugubria ternetzi are precisely the fishes most exposed to the siltation of fast, rocky habitat and to any future hydrological alteration. None of these is recorded as a present danger to this particular pike, but they are the backdrop against which a single-basin endemic's long-term status should be read.
